  • YouTube Gets Fans Closer To Lady Gaga

As the desire for user-generated content continues to climb, we are going to see more and more of this kind of thing: Celebrities using social media services like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, allowing their fans to get closer to them, at least in a technological sense. Unfortunately, there are still legal issues if you want to get physically closer to the object of your idolatry.

In this case, we have Lady Gaga, and in order to allow her fans increased access, she’s teamed up with YouTube, allowing members to ask Gaga questions via her official YouTube page. There is, of course, an introductory video with Gaga inviting her fans to participate:

As indicated, questions are submitted on Gaga’s page, or, users can submit a video if they so choose. Fans can also vote on which question they’d like to see answered, which helps further the idea of the importance of user-generated content, especially when it comes to marketing in this technological era.

MTV has some more details about Gaga’s interview process, saying, “In addition to the video network, fans can tweet their questions using the hashtag #GoogleGoesGaga. Fans have until the end of the day Friday to submit their entries.”

The only thing missing from Gaga’s current fan engagement is the use of Facebook for the interview process. Maybe next time. Head on over to Gaga’s YouTube page, or hop on Twitter with the appropriate hash tag if you’d like to further the journey into Gaga’s mind. The first person to get a successful answer to the “Are you simply a product of marketing or are you a legitimate artist?” question, preferably with an in-depth, revealing response, wins.

  • Apple Store Helps Japanese In Need

Apple Store Helps Japanese In Need

We are constantly being inundated with reports on how technology is making the world a cold, desolate place. That is why it is so nice when a story comes along about tech and social media that shows its true connective powers.

In the aftermath of the 9.0 quake that rocked the country, a Tokyo Apple store went above and beyond to help its people. Today Kevin Rose, founder of digg, posted on his blog an email he received from a friend in Japan. The unnamed friend is an employee at the Apple store, and relayed how the company helped out in the time immediately following the earthquake.

Since the quake knocked out much of the communication and transportation in the country, people found themselves stranded in the city. The Apple store became a hub for news gathering and place for people to touch base with their family members in other parts of the country. “People were swarming into Apple stores to watch the news on USTREAM and contact their families via Twitter, Facebook, and email. The young did it on their mobile devices, while the old clustered around the macs. There were even some Android users there,” said the Japanese employee.

The Apple store employees even provided chargers and adapters so that people could charge their devices. Even after the store closed, it still provided an invaluable service to many: “Even after we finally had to close [at] 10pm, crowds of people huddled in front of our stores to use the wifi into the night, as it was still the only way to get access to the outside world.”

Apple later told the employees, both retail and corporate, that they could sleep in the stores since transportation was still a no-go out of the city. They provided food and water and eventually let employees’ families stay in the stores as well. The theater rooms and break rooms provided enough space for all of the dispossessed employees.

The anonymous employee added, “That is why I am a fanboy. Ack!”

  • BUMP.com – Highway Social Media – SXSW

AT SXSW Interactive, Bump.com (not to be confused with Bump Technologies), announced the launch of an interesting license plate messaging Android app and mobile site.

The company says the app lets users “safely” send voice, email, photo, and SMS messages to a vehicle’s license plate.

“Social, safety and business communication govern the parameters of our daily lives,” says Bump. “Social uses include introductions, compliments or invitations. Safety includes anything from a heads up about a broken tail light to an admonishment for an unsafe driving maneuver to a warning that something’s happening to your car.”

Hmm. Social media meets road rage perhaps?

Bump brings social to the license plate“License plate messaging is a new form of mobile/web communication that enbales users to send messages to an automobile’s license plate by combining the license plate state abbreviation and license plate number,” the company explains. “For example, the inbox for California license plate 123ABC is [email protected]. BUMP.com has created an email inbox for every registered vehicle in America.”

In a FAQ document, Bump says it doesn’t access any DMV or related database information, only getting license plate info from the user.

  • StumbleUpon to Expand to New Platforms – More Traffic for Everybody?

StumbleUpon announced that it has raised a new $17 million series B round of funding, which the company will use to invest in the company’s discovery technology, expand to new platforms, and grow its employee base.

The new funding comes from Accel Partners, August Capital, DAG Ventures, First Round Capital and Sherpalo Ventures. The last round  was led by Accel Partners, August Capital and Sherpalo Ventures.

“We are excited to have DAG Ventures join our existing investors in this new round of financing,” said Garrett Camp, StumbleUpon CEO and co-founder. “With this new investment, we will make it even easier for people to find interesting and relevant content on the Web, whether they are on their desktop, mobile device or even TV.”

“StumbleUpon continues to grow quickly and deliver on its ambitious goal of powering personalized content discovery across all media and platforms,” said Sameer Gandhi, Partner, Accel Partners. “Content discovery is a significant opportunity, and we are excited to continue to support the leading company in the space.”

StumbleUpon finally came to iPhone and Android last year, breathing a bit of new life into the service for a lot of users. The company also recently made efforts to improve its video discovery service.

    StumbleUpon Mobile

One of the most interesting things about StumbleUpon is that while it doesn’t get nearly the attention of other social platforms like Twitter and Facebook, it is cited time and time again as the biggest provider of social media traffic to websites.

Most recently, a report in January from StatCounter found that StumbleUpon was the top social media traffic source in the U.S.

StumbleUpon just surpassed Facebook as the #1 source of social media traffic in the US! http://su.pr/6zEGWk 65 days ago via Su.pr · powered by @socialditto

It will be interesting to see where StumbleUpon expands next. With the emerging tablet market, my guess is that we’ll see some cool new stuff designed for these platforms.

  • Facebook Movie Rental: The Future Norm?

You may find yourself doing a lot more than just “liking” a movie on Facebook in the near future. There’s a chance that Facebook could become your go-to movie rental destination. Here’s who should be worried about this: Netflix, Blockbuster, Redbox, Hulu, Apple, Amazon, YouTube, and every other provider of movies online.

Warner Bros. has become the first Hollywood studio to offer movies directly on Facebook. The studio announced that it will begin testing an offering of selected movies for purchase or rental through its Facebook Page. Users will be able to use Facebook Credits to purchase or rent films while they’re on Facebook.

“Facebook has become a daily destination for hundreds of millions of people,” said Thomas Gewecke, President of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. “Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts. It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world’s largest social network.”

The studio has kicked it all off by offering The Dark Knight on the Facebook Page for the movie.

Like to talk during the movies? There are already entire businesses based on the concept of talking about the video content you’re watching with your friends on social media. If you’re watching a movie on Facebook, this should be easier than ever.

Of course, besides being incredibly disruptive for the online video and movie industries, this has the potential to be massive for Facebook for a variety of reasons. For one, Facebook credits – getting them more mainstream. Two: much more time spent on Facebook by users – an area where Facebook is hardly lacking as it is. This will only be more attractive to advertisers.

As connected TVs and related devices find their way into more homes, this is likely to become more of an attractive concept for users. However, it will be interesting to see how the studios adapt to it.

Imagine a world where studios have Facebook Pages set up for all of their movies, where they can easily be rented and viewed instantly right from Facebook. It remains to be seen whether WB will follow through on this concept, as this is just a test. It also remains to be seen whether other studios will follow suit. If so, the competition in the movie-rental industry is going to have to find some interesting ways to differentiate themselves.
Right now, WB has the cost per rental at 30 Facebook Credits or $3. It’s currently only available in the U.S. Additional titles will be available over the coming months.

  • Charlie Sheen: Crazy, Savvy, or Both?

Charlie Sheen: Crazy, Savvy, or Both?

So the consensus from everyone, including people in Hollywood and regular folks, is Charlie Sheen has gone around the bend. However, the more I take in the Charlie Sheen social media experience, I’m beginning to think there’s some savvy to go along with the insanity.

If anything can be a commodity, why not craziness? Also, what better way to market your shenanigans than posting it on Twitter?

hey Guinness, might wanna start writing them in pencil.
    #checkit ; you’ve been warned.

WebProNews has already reported about Sheen being the fastest Twitter user in history to gain 1 million followers.

To go along with this feat, “Sheen’s-Korner” (NSFW: language), a UStream channel has already garnered over 600,000 views. Episode 2, titled “Torpedoes of Truth” received 327k views on its own. He really opened up during this episode, showing a phone call with who appears to be his agent.

If the UStream views aren’t enough to convince one of the success Sheen is having with social media, he’s already searching for an intern. Of course, in order to be Charlie Sheen’s intern, you must be filled with #tigerblood and full of #winning.

    I’m looking to hire a #winning INTERN with #TigerBlood. Apply here – http://bit.ly/hykQQF #TigerBloodIntern #internship #ad 1 hour ago via Ad.ly Network · powered by @socialditto

It has been reported (during my typing of this article) that Sheen has been fired from Two and a Half Men. Which could truly prove the power of social media. With Sheen being fired from his moneymaking job, will Twitter and UStream be powerful enough to carry him to his next gig? Or has his life become the gig now?

  • Demand Media Acquires CoveritLive, A Real-Time Event Coverage Platform

Demand Media has acquired real-time event coverage provider CoverItLive, which is used by brands like Yahoo,  ESPN, Ford, Time, News Corp, EA, FOX News, and BBC. Demand Media is positioning the acquisition as a way for the company to expand its social reach.

CoveritLive lets audiences of events engage in real-time, provides instant reader polling, and contains Q&A capabilities (which could be helpful in itself for Demand, considering the the company’s Q&A site AnswerBag was recently hit by Google’s algorithm update).

Demand Media Picks Up CoveritLive to Add to Pluck

"CoveritLive really reflects our mission as a company – publishing what the world wants to know and share," says Demand Media CEO Richard Rosenblatt. "Consumers around the world are tuning in by the millions to participate in live events powered by CoveritLive, collectively spending over a billion minutes on the platform each month. CoveritLive’s live event platform helps us continue to work towards that mission, building on both our social publishing model and our social media product offering with a platform that offers proven value to both brands and consumers."

Some noteworthy tweets from Rosenblatt about CoveritLive:

Demand Media and CoveritLive were already strategic partners. The two companies have worked together since 2009, with Demand Media even having a minority stake in CoveritLive. The product will become part of Pluck, Demand Media’s social platform. Pluck itself is already used by a lot of major brands:

    Brands that Use Pluck

"Like Demand Media, we started CoveritLive to help fill the gaps in online content. We saw an opportunity to cover live events in a way that no one had before by combining talented writers, multimedia and two way engagement via comments and polls," said CoveritLive President and Founder Keith McSpurren.  "As a Demand Media partner, our joint customers have seen the value of combining our service with Pluck’s integrated community platform. It’s a powerful combination that helps marketers engage consumers before, during and after an event."

According to Demand Media, events hosted on CoveritLive attract an audience of over 60 million people every month, 60% of which comes from outside the United States. The company has been talking about expanding more internationally, so this acquisition should help with that too.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not revealed.

Earlier this week, Demand Media announced a partnership with Rachael Ray on creating food content for eHow.

  • Charlie Sheen on Twitter … and MySpace

Charlie Sheen has moved into the social media universe. The man was apparently not getting enough media attention, so now he can communicate with people on a mass scale.

Getting most of the coverage is Sheen’s Twitter account, @charliesheen. Sheen’s bio simply says: "Unemployed Winner…."  He is currently following ten people including: Paul Scheer, Fred Durst, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Brian Wilson, Nich Swisher, P Diddy, Sheen’s assistant Rick Calamaro, Cat Schwartz, Wynner Mitchell, Piers Morgan, Howard Stern, Alyssa Milano, Chris Ovitz (Director of Business Development at Ad.ly), Bree Olson, Bob Maron, and Omid Ashtari.

  • LinkedIn Recognizes Importance of Email, Launches New Feature

LinkedIn announced the launch of a new targeted email feature for users seeking jobs. LinkedIn members who view jobs on the service will receive recommendations automatically via email.

The feature is powered by LinkedIn’s "Jobs You May Be Interested In" system, and the emails include results that are personalized based on the user’s profile.

"LinkedIn’s job matching technology connects the right candidate with the right job at the right time to deliver high-quality leads without the noise of unqualified resumes," says LinkedIn’s Parker Barrile. "By automatically delivering personalized jobs directly to the most relevant job seekers, we’re redefining the way employers connect with talent."

    LinkedIn Jobs Alert emails

People keeping talking about social media killing email, yet we keep seeing evidence to the contrary. LinkedIn is the premiere social network when it comes to business professionals and job-seekers, and clearly even they see the value of email.

It’s a simple alerts-style feature, but it’s personalized, and bound to be more effective than simply relying on LinkedIn users to check the site on their own on a frequent basis.

  • Is Email Really in Danger Because of Social Media?

Is Email Really in Danger Because of Social Media?

I’m not sure which came first, the idea that social media is killing blogs or social media is killing email. Both arguments are brought up every so often, and both are equally ludicrous if you ask me. Earlier this week, we examined the former, and interestingly enough, the latter was also brought up by recent data from comScore and the Pew Internet Project.

Actually, it was The Discovery Channel, who looked at the data and asked, "Is email dead?"

Is Email dying at the hands of social networks and texting? Tell us what you think.

"Overall, when you look at how many teens have ever sent an e-mail, it’s most of them, so it’s still being used," said Amanda Lenhart, senior research specialist with the Pew Internet Project. "It just isn’t used for communicating with people you’re primarily communicating with in your life, namely your friends, and it’s absolutely true that text messaging and messaging through social networks has supplanted e-mail messaging to friends."

People might turn more and more to social networks for casual conversations, link sharing, and things like that, but call me when your banking and all your professional communicating are done through Facebook. In fact, call me when you receive notifications from all the social media sites you participate on are sent to your Facebook account (unless you count Facebook’s new email service). The jury’s still out on Facebook’s new messaging system, but let’s not forget, it launched with Facebook.com email addresses.

Is mobile killing email? Not so much. Recent data, also from comScore finds that mobile email usage is seeing significant growth

    Mobile-email

Email will continue to evolve, but it’s not going away – at least not in the foreseeable future. If social media’s going to kill email, it’s going to have to do a lot better than what it does so far.

If anything, social (along with mobile) is helping email.

What do you think? Is email in danger? Share your thoughts.

  • Does Facebook Stress You Out?

The more Facebook friends people have , the more likely they are to feel stressed out by the site, according to a new study by Scottish researchers.

Do you feel stressed by the number of Facebook Friends you have? Let us know in the comments.

Psychologists from Edinburgh Napier University surveyed 200 students on their use of Facebook, and found that a for a significant number of users the negative effect of the social network outweighed the benefits of staying in touch with friends and family.

Dr-Kathy-Charles “The results threw up a number of paradoxes,” said Dr Kathy Charles, who led the study. “For instance, although there is great pressure to be on Facebook there is also considerable ambivalence amongst users about its benefits.”

“Our data also suggests that there is a significant minority of users who experience considerable Facebook-related anxiety, with only very modest or tenuous rewards. And we found it was actually those with the most contacts, those who had invested the most time in the site, who were the ones most likely to be stressed.”

    Highlights of the study include:

*12 percent of respondents said that Facebook made them feel anxious.  Of these, respondents had an average of 117 ‘friends’ each.  The remaining 88% of respondents, who said that Facebook did not make them feel anxious, had an average of 75 ‘friends’ each.

*63 percent delayed replying to friend requests

*32 percent said rejecting friend requests led to feelings of guilt and discomfort

*10 percent admitted disliking receiving friend requests

“An overwhelming majority of respondents reported that the best thing about Facebook was ‘keeping in touch’, often without any further explanation,” said Dr Charles. “But many also told us they were anxious about withdrawing from the site for fear of missing important social information or offending contacts.

“Like gambling, Facebook keeps users in a neurotic limbo, not knowing whether they should hang on in there just in case they miss out on something good.”

She said other causes of stress included deleting unwanted contacts, the pressure to be entertaining, and having to use appropriate etiquette for different types of friends.

“The other responses we got in focus groups and one-to-one interviews suggests that the survey figures actually under represent aspects of stress and anxiety felt by some Facebook users, whether it’s through feelings of exclusion, pressure to be entertaining, paranoia or envy of others’ lifestyles,” said Dr. Charles.

WebProNews reached out to Dr. Charles for additional commentary about the Facebook study but has yet to receive a response.

Over at Slashdot commenter RoberM1968 had the following to say:

I dont find the amount of FB friends I have stressful, nor do I find deleting any of them stressful. I think people need to start reconnecting with the real world if they suffer stress from such things. Then again, the real world is a lot more stressful… maybe they should keep wasting their time on FB worrying about such "stressful" things – it’s a lot less stress than the real world nowadays.

Does Facebook stress you out? Let us know in the comments.

  • HTC ChaCha and Salsa Help Cement Facebook’s Future As Social Leader

Facebook is now officially a hard key on phones, thanks to HTC, which announced two new Android devices with such a feature: the HTC ChaCha and the HTC Salsa.

Like most smartphones have a button for search, these two phones have a button for sharing. The concept is simple, whatever app you’re in or whatever content you’re viewing, you can instantly share that to Facebook with a quick press of a button. The button pulsates with light whenever there is an opportunity to share content, so it even goes out of its way to encourage sharing.

"With a single press of the button, you can update your status, upload a photo, share a Website, post what song you are listening to, ‘check in’ to a location and more," HTC explains. "For example, you can take a photograph of friends on your phone and upload it instantly to Facebook by simply pressing the button. Or let your friends know what song you’re listening to by pressing the button while listening to music on the phone. The track is automatically identified and shared on Facebook."

This could be the beginning of something huge for Facebook, which is already huge itself. It’s highly unlikely that other manufacturers (as well as other models from HTC) will not include such Facebook buttons in the future. So with that in mind, it stands to reason that there will be a lot more sharing of content through Facebook, further cementing the social network as the leader in its space, and helping to prevent it (along with many other factors) from going the way of MySpace.

What next, Twitter hard keys? Maybe Google should find a way to get a Google Buzz hard key on some Android phones. Or a "Google+1" key.

A hard key may seem like a small feature, but it’s huge for the companies that benefit from its functionality. How many Google searches do you think start with the tap of such a button? That’s why the Nokia deal is so potentially huge for Microsoft’s Bing

"HTC has always understood that different people want different things and the new HTC ChaCha and Salsa offer special new ways to experience Facebook on a mobile device," said HTC CEO Peter Chou. "With more than 500 million active users worldwide, Facebook has become synonymous with the social web and we wanted to create the ultimate socially connected phones with mass market appeal."

"We have worked closely with HTC for several years on bringing Facebook to their devices and HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa are the next stage," said Henri Moissinac, Head of Mobile Business for Facebook. "HTC has brought Facebook to these two new devices in an innovative way enabling people to connect and share easily whenever they want, wherever they are."

These two phones both run Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 and the latest iteration of HTC Sense. Facebook messages and conversations appear within text and email inboxes alongside regular conversations.

Both phones will be available in Europe and Asia in the second quarter, and later this year in the US, where they will be exclusive to AT&T.

HTC also launched a new tablet called the Flyer, and 3 more smartphones: the HTC Desire S, HTC Wildfire S, and HTC Incredible S.

Update: Since this article was written, Facebook commented further on the HTC ChaCha and Salsa phones, as well as some other mobile happenings:

Two upcoming Android devices from INQ, the Cloud Touch and Cloud Q, feature new Facebook integrations with single sign-on and easy one-touch access to popular Facebook features. The home screen features your News Feed (including your friends’ updates, pictures, videos and links) and quick links to Chat, Messages, Places, notifications and more. You can also check in to your favorite shops and businesses with Facebook Places, right from the home screen.

  • How IntoNow Plans to Monetize Your Conversations About the Shows You’re Watching

A new startup called IntoNow has been generating some buzz with a social TV app for the iPhone/iPad. Founder and CEO Adam Cahan told WebProNews about how it works, and why users will find it useful for entertainment content discovery based on what you have in common with your friends’ viewing habits.

"About 60% of people watching television are also connected to the Internet, so they’re doing something online while they’re watching TV," said Cahan. "If you dive a little bit deeper, what you find out is that the vast majority of those people are communicating with their friends or doing something related to the actual content that they’re engaged in. So what we tried to do was create a really easy way for people to connect with their friends around the shows that they love."

"One of the biggest technical achievements was the fact that we could do it against live TV," he said. "We do it across 130 channels of live television, and so what we basically designed was a way for you to press a button, and simply say ‘this is what I’m watching, and this is literally what I’m doing right now,’ and be able to connect with friends."

It’s important to note that the app doesn’t work only with live TV, but also with online content.

As far as what makes IntoNow useful, he drew upon some comparisons to location-based services like Foursquare, Gowalla, etc. "The television or entertainment industry right now is a little bit like where those location-based services were before GPS existed," he said. "Basically what you have is people typing into a box, ‘Hey, I’m watching House,’ or ‘I’m watching the VMAs.’ That’s not really a terrific user experience, nor is it frankly an easy way to connect. You can be saying something like, ‘I’m watching the music awards,’ and I’m saying ‘#vmas’, we’re having two disjointed conversations. What we found with location-based services is those services never took off when people had to type in, ‘hey, this is the restaurant I’m at.’ That was kind of the fire that got us going."

He called the service a mashup of TiVo and Facebook, and explained what makes it such a useful tool for entertainment discovery in the above video.

So why use this over simply sharing directly through Facebook/Twitter?

"We’re not actually saying, ‘hey, we need to own that conversation," explained Cahan. "If you notice in the app, the first thing that we suggest you do is share. Share it on Facebook. Share it on Twitter. Share it anywhere you want. Frankly, we already know based on the links that we generate, that a lot of the conversation is actually happening on a place like a Facebook or Twitter. So, all we’re trying to do is seamlessly establish those connections. So really, it’s about getting recommendations, and about getting a sense of your tastes, your friends’ tastes, and then starting to come back to you with ideas around things that we think you should like."

Cahan talked a little bit about privacy, as the subject is bound to be on users’ minds from time to time. He said that People often ask if they’re shipping audio from the device, and that the answer is no. "We can’t hear anything that’s going on in the room or anything like that," he assured us.

Users can always delete what they’ve done, but everyone sees the public stream. Things that happen between friends are locked down. You can only comment on friends’ material, and you can get notifications when you’re both watching the same show.

    IntoNow Conversations

Eventually, the conversation turned to monetization. Many startups simply build their audiences and worry about how to monteze them later. IntoNow already has a few things in mind for the future.

"If you’re watching a commercial on TV, press that button – that green button, and see the response that you get back," said Cahan. "So right now, the response that you get back is, ‘hey, you’re watching a commercial.’ What we’re doing going forward is enabling those commercials, meaning, I’m watching a Pepsi commercial…Press that green button. Here’s an offer from Pepsi. I’m watching a car commercial. I’m actually really into this car…Press that green button. Here’s more information about the Audi A4. Here’s more information about where you can find it…all of that kind of stuff. So we very much want to activate it and enable a lot of those commercials to add value back."

"The other thing is, when you think about the landscape of different players here, there’s also content owners," he continued. "We know in a validated way, ‘hey, this is what you’re watching. You are watching Jersey Shore Episode 3, and by the way, are you watching it live or not. Is it actually on air…’ So you think about the content industry, what they’re really focused on is loyal viewing and also live viewing. We have the ability to validate that that’s what you’re actually doing, so we’re talking with a lot of content owners around, ‘hey, let’s create a program for your audience – that is if you ID live, every single episode while it’s on air, and do that throughout the season, here’s some…who knows what that is. Snooki’s going to give you the fist bump…who knows?"

"The other area is in terms of general advertising, clearly we have a good understanding of ‘psychographic’ segments," he added. "Here’s all the people who like crime. Here’s the people who like comedy…"

IntoNow is the number four free social networking iPhone app after Facebook, Skype, and Twitter. While it’s only available for iOS right now, Cahan says you can expect Android and web versions soon, and they’re looking to get their app pre-installed on TVs.

  • Smartphones Driving Mobile Media Consumption

Smartphones aggressively saturated the mobile market in 2010, driving an increase in mobile media consumption by users worldwide, according to a new report from comScore.

“2010 was a game-changing year for the mobile industry,” said Mark Donovan, comScore senior vice president of mobile. “Smartphone adoption, 3G penetration and unlimited data plans drove a surge of mobile media consumption across geographies and deepened the integration of mobile devices into everyday life.”

    Mobile-Growth

“And, the coming year has the potential to be even more exciting. As the mobile ecosystem continues to develop, including progress in mobile advertising and commerce, it’s clear that mobile is destined to become an increasingly important platform for digital marketers across all industries.”

Smartphone adoption increased in both the U.S. and Europe. U.S. smartphone adoption reached 27 percent of mobile subscribers in December 2010, an increase of 10 percentage points from the previous year, while European adoption reached 31 percent, also up nearly 10 points versus year ago.

Nokia was the top handset maker in the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain. Samsung took the top spot in the U.S. and France, and also ranked in the top three in the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Other highlights from the report include:

*36 percent of mobile Americans and 29 percent of Europeans browsed the mobile web in December 2010, with access through an application reaching 34 percent of Americans and 28 percent of Europeans. Across regions, mobile browsing and application usage is growing in the range of 7-9 percentage points per year.

*More than 75 percent of mobile subscribers in Japan are connected media users (used their browser, accessed applications or downloaded content) far surpassing the U.S. and European countries in this regard. Japan also saw nearly 10 percent of its mobile audience make a purchase with their mobile wallet in December 2010.

*Over the past year the number of mobile users that accessed a social networking site at least once a month via their mobile device increased by 56 percent to nearly 58 million users in the U.S. Even stronger growth occurred in Europe, with a 75-percent increase in the number of users over the last year to 42 million in December 2010.

*Network quality and cost of monthly plan were the top 2 purchase consideration factors for mobile subscribers in the U.S. and UK.

  • Investors May Value Zynga At Between $7B, $9B

Late last week, reports indicated that several different companies (including Facebook and Google) have shown interest in acquiring Twitter for $8 billion to $10 billion.  Now, although nothing’s certain, fresh rumors indicate that investors might assign a similar value to Zynga.

The Wall Street Journal reported this morning, "Social-gaming company Zynga Inc. is holding discussions with potential investors about raising around $250 million in new funding in a deal that could value the three-year-old start-up at between $7 billion and $9 billion, according to people familiar with the matter."

That would be a stunning achievement.  For comparison’s sake, we’ll point out that AOL, IAC Interactive, and Yahoo only have market caps of $2.3 billion, $3.2 billion, and $22.0 billion, respectively.

Also, it’s no secret that there are many vocal critics of the design of Zynga’s games, and the company’s dependence on Facebook is another potential weakness.

Depending on your perspective, though, the valuation’s not too much of a leap.  Twitter’s still struggling to be profitable, after all, while the WSJ stated, "The huge audience for its games – Zynga has a total of 275 million active monthly users across all its titles – helped Zynga generate about $400 million in profit last year on approximately $850 million in revenue, said another person familiar with its finances."

It should be interesting to see whether anything comes of these rumors.

  • Twitter for Android Becomes More Like Other Twitter Apps

Twitter has launched a new version of its Android App. The company says its designed to feel more like its other official Twitter apps to provide a more consistent experience.

"You can use Twitter for Android even if you haven’t signed in or don’t have an account," says Carolyn Penner with Twitter Communications. "You can view trends, browse your interests and see suggested users in several categories, including fashion, entertainment and travel, or search to find out what people are saying about topics you care about, such as big sporting events. You can now also sign up for Twitter from within the app."

Android device owners: you really should check out the new version of Twitter for Android. Just launched! http://t.co/mTR3kZ0less than a minute ago via Tweet Button

"We made some significant changes in the design of the new app," she says. "When you first sign in, you’ll see your timeline, along with icons along the top that let you view @mentions, messages, and lists. This layout makes it fast and simple to navigate Twitter on your Android device. Also, the @mentions tab now includes Retweets; seeing replies and Retweets in one place offers a quick way to better understand which Tweets are sparking interest and engagement. In addition, we introduced auto-complete for usernames."

Another new feature of the app is the addition of universal search, so you can search tweets for specific keywords, get tweets from nearby users with those keywords, search for people, or search for specific accounts. At the bottom of the search section, you can scan your address book to find people on Twitter – that should help for user discoverability (though it only works for users who choose to be discoverable).

  • No “Actors” for The Social Network

No “Actors” for The Social Network

Awards season has been kind to The Social Network. At the Golden Globes, the film won Best Director (David Fincher), Best Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin), Best Score (Trent Reznor), and Best Picure, Drama. Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield had been nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for their roles as Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin respectively.

Then, The Social Network was nominated for 8 academy awards, including: Best Picture, Best Direction, Actor in a Leading Role, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound Mixing, and Music (Original Score).

The film missed out on any wins at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards last night, however. Eisenberg, Garfield, and co-stars Justin Timberlake and Armie Hammer were all in attendance, and presented the film’s nomination for Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture. It was also nominated for Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Leading Role (Eisenberg).

Eisenberg hosted Saturday Night Live over the weekend, and was met during his monologue by SNL’s Andy Samberg portraying Mark Zuckerberg. Then he was met by the real Mark Zuckerberg:

By the way, the awards given out at the SAG awards are called "Actors" – hence, the title of this article. I would not imply that the actors in the film should be called actors.
