Elon Musk Will Fund Mars Colonization By Selling His Possessions

Elon Musk knows the value of putting your money where your mouth is, as he plans to personally fund Mars colonization.

Musk has made no secret of his belief that humanity must become a spacefaring race in order to survive. His company SpaceX is working toward that goal, and is one of the leading corporations involved in space exploration.

One of Musk’s primary goals is to colonize Mars. The tech mogul has previously stated his plan to send 1 million people to mars by 2050, using a fleet of 1,000 SpaceX Starships.

Needless to say, such lofty plans will involve tremendous expenditures, which Musk has a plan for: He’s selling his homes and worldly possessions to help fund his Mars dream.

“I think it is important for humanity to become a spacefaring civilization and a multiplanet species. And it’s going to take a lot of resources to build a city on Mars,” Musk told Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner, via Business Insider. “I want to be able to contribute as much as possible to the city on Mars. That means just a lot of capital.” In Musk’s eyes, parting ways with his material possessions also signals that he’s committed to going to Mars.”

It’s a safe bet SpaceX will have a much easier time gaining support and investors for its efforts when its CEO is demonstrating such a high level of commitment.

  • Tesla Replaces Facebook As Fifth Most Valuable US Company

Tesla Replaces Facebook As Fifth Most Valuable US Company

Tesla entered an exclusive club Friday, becoming the fifth most valuable US company at Facebook’s expense.

Tesla closed the day Friday with a valuable of $820 billion, making it one of the top five most valuable US companies, according to CNBC. The previous fifth-place company, Facebook, was worth $763 billion at the close of market.

Tesla’s new valuation places it in exclusive company, along with Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet. It also underscores the importance of the electric vehicle (EV) market as countries and companies pivot to environmentally sustainable transportation.

As CNBC points out, Tesla is benefiting from the recent elections, with President-elect Joe Biden committed to heavy investment in EV charging infrastructure and the domestic auto industry. Similarly, Democratic candidates winning the Georgia runoff races was seen as another boost to Tesla, as it clears potential obstacles to Biden’s agenda and environmental initiatives.

  • Elon Musk: Use Signal

    Elon Musk: Use Signal

Secure messaging app Signal has received a boost from one of the titans of tech, as Elon Musk tells his Twitter followers to “use Signal.”

Signal exists in the same space as WhatsApp and Telegram. The app provides end-to-end encrypted chat and voice calls, and is widely considered one of the most secure communication methods on the planet. In fact, the EU commission, US Senate and some military units all recommend their members use it.

While WhatsApp may be more popular, there have been growing concerns regarding its security and privacy. Most recently, WhatsApp announced a changed to its privacy policies, wherein it will share significant user data with Facebook and other Facebook companies. Needless to say, this has not gone over well with users who value privacy and security.

Elon Musk is the latest to come out in favor of WhatsApp’s more secure alternative.

Facebook has shown a repeated lack interest or ability in protecting people’s privacy. Using WhatsApp for secure communication is the equivalent of having the fox guard the henhouse.

For any individuals concerned with privacy and security, Musk is right: Use Signal.

  • Elon Musk Tried to Sell Tesla to Apple

Elon Musk Tried to Sell Tesla to Apple

Elon Musk has revealed that he tried to set up a meeting with Tim Cook to sell Tesla to Apple during the Tesla 3’s “darkest days.”

Apple has been making headlines with its Project Titan, its effort to disrupt the automotive industry. Project Titan has alternately been described as a fully electric automobile, an AI system that Apple’s partners could integrate with new vehicles, or a third-party system that could be added to a wide range of vehicles. The most recent rumors have the Apple Car debuting in 2021, while others say it will be released in 2024.

In a surprising revelation, Musk has indicated Apple may have missed out on a golden opportunity to purchase Tesla when the company was worth a tenth of its current value. Musk made the revelation via Twitter, in response to the most recent rumors about the Apple Car.

  • China May Push Tesla Over Its 500,000 Vehicle Goal

China May Push Tesla Over Its 500,000 Vehicle Goal

Demand for Teslas in China could help push the company over its 2020 goal of selling 500,000 vehicles, according to one analyst.

Many were skeptical that Tesla could achieve the goal it set for itself when it announced it was planning on shipping 500,000 vehicles in 2020. Undeterred, the company reiterated its goal during its third-quarter earnings call.

According to Business Insider, Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives believes China is the key to Tesla’s goal. In November, Tesla sold some 22,000 vehicles in China. If that demand continues in December, it should be enough to push the company past the 500,000 mark.

“We believe the company is tracking to another strong month of December in China which could be the tipping point to get Musk & Co. to hit/exceed its 500k annual delivery target, an achievement not even on the map for the Street going back to the late spring/summer timeframe,” Ives said.

Ives believes Teslas stock could increase as much as 56% to $1,000 a share, in part as a result of China’s demand.

“The China growth story is worth at least $100 per share in a bull case to Tesla as this EV penetration is set to ramp significantly over the next 12 to 18 months, along with major battery innovations coming out of Giga 3 and elsewhere throughout the China EV supply chain,” Ives added.

  • Scientists May Be Able to Create Oxygen on Mars

Scientists May Be Able to Create Oxygen on Mars

Scientists may have discovered a way to create oxygen on Mars, a crucial step toward long-term colonization.

Interest in colonizing Mars has increased in recent years. Many, including Tesla and SpaceX’s Elon Musk, believe the human race needs the kind of insurance policy a second planetary home would provide. Especially as climate change has become a bigger threat, many believe it’s vital to colonize other planets. Musk has even said he’s confident SpaceX will send humans to Mars in roughly six years.

One of the biggest challenges to long-term colonization, however, is oxygen generation. Without a native method to produce oxygen on Mars, any colonization efforts would be limited by the quantity of oxygen that could be brought on resupply missions.

Scientists believe they have discovered a solution, however. NASA is currently working with MOXIE (Mars Oxygen in Situ Resource Utilization Experiment) to convert carbon dioxide in the Martian atmosphere to oxygen. MOXIE operates along the same principle as trees on Earth.

According to CNN, however, scientists at Washington University in St. Louis have come up with a method they believe will compliment MOXIE and provide a second source of oxygen. The new method, proposed by Professor Vijay Ramani and his colleagues, uses salty water to generate oxygen.

Despite its red desert appearance, Mars has quite a bit of ice. In addition, there appears to be a salty lake, along with a number of ponds, under the southern icecap.

“The presence of the brine is fortuitous because it lowers freezing point of the water. You take the salty, brackish water and electrolyze that. Our process takes the water and splits it into hydrogen and oxygen,” Ramani said.

While some NASA personnel are doubtful the process will work, due to the frost point on Mars, it appears there are no shortage of possibilities for generating oxygen on Mars. That’s one less hurdle to long-term colonization.

  • Elon Musk Open to Friendly Merger With Legacy Automaker

Elon Musk Open to Friendly Merger With Legacy Automaker

Elon Musk sat down with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner to discuss a range of subjects, including whether Tesla would acquire a legacy automaker.

Once derided as a pipe dream with no real chance of widespread success, Tesla has risen to all-new heights in the auto industry. Its market capitalization far exceeds many legacy automakers. In addition, the entire industry is now pivoting to where Tesla currently is, with virtually every major automaker increasing their electric/hybrid production. Many, including Subaru and Bentley, have announced definitive plans to transition exclusively to electric/hybrid vehicles in the near future.

The state of the industry has caused some speculation that Tesla might considering acquiring one of the legacy automakers, giving it access to a larger network of factories, dealerships and infrastructure. Döpfner addressed this directly in an interview with Musk Tuesday.

“Is it a serious option to buy one of the incumbents, or one of the big car companies, for you?” Döpfner asked.

“Well, I think we’re definitely not going to launch a hostile takeover,” Musk said. “So I suppose…if somebody said, ‘Hey, we think it would be a good idea to merge with Tesla,’ we certainly could have that conversation. But, you know, we don’t want it to be a hostile takeover sort of situation.”

While it doesn’t appear there is any serious discussion or inquiry regarding such a merger, the fact that Tesla is open to such a proposal raises a world of possibilities, both for the automaker and the industry in general.

  • Tesla May Introduce Compact Car or Hatchback

Tesla May Introduce Compact Car or Hatchback

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has teased the possibility of a compact model or a hatchback, in a big departure from Tesla’s standard designs.

Tesla has largely been known for sedans, as well as one SUV and its upcoming Cybertruck. While larger cars are the norm in the US, smaller cars are favored in Europe. Speaking to a European conference on batteries that was hosted by Germany, Musk recounted struggling to find a parking spot in Berlin when driving a Model X.

“I was driving a Model X around Berlin and we had quite a bit of trouble finding a parking space where we could fit,” he said, according to Reuters.

As a result, Musk has said a compact or hatchback style car makes sense for the European market.

“Possibly in Europe it would make sense to do, I guess, a compact car, perhaps a hatchback or something like that,” said Musk.

Should Tesla move forward with a compact design, given the success of the Civic and Corolla, it’s a safe bet it would be popular in the US as well.

  • Elon Musk: We Must Become A Multi-Planet Species

Elon Musk: We Must Become A Multi-Planet Species

Space pioneer Elon Musk said on a podcast today with Kara Swisher that becoming a multi-planet species is fundamentally important to ensuring the long-term survival of life as we know it:

Being A Multi-Planet Species Is Important To Our Survival

We are able to lower the cost of access to space so we are certainly saving taxpayers a lot of money. We’re advancing the technology of launch by having reusable rockets. Reusability is very important for improving access to space. It’s really just kind of insane to have a rocket be expendable. You build this incredibly exquisite machine and then it comes down and smashes in the ocean. Then there is like debris at the bottom of the ocean. This is crazy.

Ultimately, you want many companies competing (in space) to serve the greater good or serve the customer essentially. You want multiple companies to advance the future of space flight so that we can ultimately become a multi-planet species and a spacefaring civilization. This is fundamentally important to ensuring the long-term survival of life as we know it. We must become a multi-planet species.

I am not trying to be doom and gloom here but the fossil record does show that there have been many extinction events over the millenia. These are from meteors, super volcanoes, and just from natural planet variation. It does become very severe but at a pace that would seem slow to us. Then eventually the sun is going to expand and engulf and incinerate Earth. This is for sure going to happen but not anytime soon.

It’s Sad That In 2020 We Can’t Even Go Back To The Moon

Several years ago I had some private dinners with Jeff Bezos talking about space. He has a similar view that we need to be a spacefaring civilization and multi-planet species. I have some minor disagreements with him. I don’t think that we want to be living on a space station. I think we want to be living on a planet. But whatever, if you have advanced rockets you can decide whether you want to live on a space station or live on Mars.

Right now, we have a long way to go because we can’t even get back to the Moon. I think it is sad that we were able to go to the Moon in 1969 and here we are in 2020 and can’t even go back to the Moon. We definitely want to make sure that civilization is improving over time.

  • Tesla Promises $25,000 Vehicle Within Three Years

Tesla Promises $25,000 Vehicle Within Three Years

Elon Musk has promised dramatically lower battery costs, leading to $25,000 Tesla vehicles within three years.

During the company’s Battery Day, Musk talked about the future of battery production. “The battery stuff is clearly revolutionary and essential to Tesla’s goal,” Musk said, “accelerating the [transition] to sustainable energy.”

According to NBC News, Musk said there would need to be significant technological breakthroughs for the cost of batteries to come down lower than they currently are. In the meantime, the company is planning on revamping its entire manufacturing process, streamlining it and eliminating more expensive elements.

The result will be batteries that are not only less expensive, but also pack more energy. Controlling the entire process could give Tesla an even greater advantage over competitors than it currently enjoys.

Either way, Musk is confident $25,000, fully autonomous Teslas will be a reality within three years.

  • Microsoft Gains Exclusive License to OpenAI’s GPT-3 Model

Microsoft Gains Exclusive License to OpenAI’s GPT-3 Model

Microsoft has scored a big win in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), gaining an exclusive license for OpenAI’s GPT-3 language model.

OpenAI is one of the leading AI research labs. Elon Musk has been one of the biggest critics of AI, believing it poses an existential threat to humanity. Musk was one of the original founders of OpenAI, in the hopes that responsible AI development could help avert disaster.

GPT-3 is “an autoregressive language model with 175 billion parameters, 10x more than any previous non-sparse language model.” The model uses deep learning to better emulate human language patterns.

Microsoft’s latest announcement builds on their existing partnership with OpenAI, which was expanded in May.

”Today, I’m very excited to announce that Microsoft is teaming up with OpenAI to exclusively license GPT-3, allowing us to leverage its technical innovations to develop and deliver advanced AI solutions for our customers, as well as create new solutions that harness the amazing power of advanced natural language generation,” writes Kevin Scott – Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Microsoft.

”We see this as an incredible opportunity to expand our Azure-powered AI platform in a way that democratizes AI technology, enables new products, services and experiences, and increases the positive impact of AI at Scale. Our mission at Microsoft is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more, so we want to make sure that this AI platform is available to everyone – researchers, entrepreneurs, hobbyists, businesses – to empower their ambitions to create something new and interesting.”

Scott acknowledges that, at this point, it’s hard to imagine the many ways GPT-3 will impact the industry. The partnership, however, ensures Microsoft will continue to be on the forefront of AI development.

  • Tesla May Soon Have 50% Higher Capacity Batteries

Tesla May Soon Have 50% Higher Capacity Batteries

Tesla may have batteries with as much as 50% higher capacity in just a few years, if a tweet by Elon Musk is correct.

Tesla is widely considered to have significant lead in battery tech, as well as its electronics tech. This has given the automaker a roughly $50 per kilowatt hour (kWh) advantage over rivals. According to Elon Musk, however, that advantage may soon be even bigger.

Responding to a user asking about Tesla’s rumored electric airplane, Musk indicated volume production of 400 Wh/kg batteries is just a few years away.

If Tesla is able to achieve what Musk is describing, this would open the door to a number of possibilities, including that rumored plane. It would also put significant pressure on rivals, many of whom are already several years behind Tesla.

Awesome: Elon Musk & Jay Leno Drive the 2021 Tesla Cybertruck

“At Tesla, we always want to have the production car be better than the show car,” says Tesla CEO Elon Musk. “It always drove me crazy when manufacturers would come out with this cool looking show car and then the actual production car would be way worse. You’re like man you got us all excited about this sweet looking car and then the production one was terrible. We’re five percent too big. We (plan to) just take all the proportions and drop them by about five percent (for the actual production version of the Cybertruck). It’s got to fit in a normal garage.”

“There are lots of little details that people wouldn’t necessarily pick up consciously,” says Musk. “Just improving visibility and having the glass like this is actually quite hard because it’s so sloped. We are going to be using effectively a form of armored glass for the car. The door panels of the car are 300 series stainless steel and it’s so tough that it’s bulletproof to a handgun. It’s badass and super cool. When the apocalypse comes you should be glad it’s bulletproof. We want to be a leader in apocalypse technology.”

In Silicon Valley, the Entire Conversation Is Why Am I Here?

Tech visionary Jason Calacanis, in an interview on CNBC, says that California and Silicon Valley are doing everything they can to get rid of great companies like Telsa:

It seems like they’re singling Elon Musk out for some reason which is a really stupid mistake on the part of California. Elon Musk is a once-in-a-generation entrepreneur and the products he makes are second to none. They’re the category killers and category redefiners. At the end of the day what we do in investing in companies here in Silicon Valley and what you do in making bets on the public markets is about world-class products and services. This is the world-class product in the automotive space and it’s better than anything the incumbents have.

California is doing every they can everything they can in terms of taxes and in terms of regulation to get great companies out of here. In Silicon Valley right now the entire conversation is why am I here? Why am I paying these prices? Why am I dealing with dysfunctional government on the local level and on the state level? People are looking at Texas, Nevada, Florida, and Tokyo. People want out of this town. This a very real trend.

  • OpenAI Releases Jukebox AI, A Music Generating Neural Net

OpenAI Releases Jukebox AI, A Music Generating Neural Net

And the award goes to…Rock and Roll Bot 101111. While that may not be something we are accustomed to hearing, it may be soon thanks to OpenAI.

OpenAI is a research organization focused on artificial Intelligence (AI). It was founded in 2015 by Sam Altman and Elon Musk. Musk, in particular, has long been critical of AI, warning that it could bring about the downfall of the human race. OpenAI was founded to promote safe, responsible AI research and development.

OpenAI’s latest announcement is “Jukebox, a neural net that generates music, including rudimentary singing, as raw audio in a variety of genres and artist styles.” Providing Jukebox with an artist, style and lyrics gives the AI the raw material it needs to produce a unique music sample from scratch.

“We chose to work on music because we want to continue to push the boundaries of generative models,” reads OpenAI’s announcement. “Our previous work on MuseNet explored synthesizing music based on large amounts of MIDI data. Now in raw audio, our models must learn to tackle high diversity as well as very long range structure, and the raw audio domain is particularly unforgiving of errors in short, medium, or long term timing.”

The accompanying paper goes further, saying “we show that our models can produce songs from highly diverse genres of music like rock, hip-hop, and jazz. They can capture melody, rhythm, long-range composition, and timbres for a wide variety of instruments, as well as the styles and voices of singers to be produced with the mu- sic. We can also generate novel completions of existing songs. Our approach allows the option to influence the generation process: by swapping the top prior with a conditional prior, we can condition on lyrics to tell the singer what to sing, or on midi to control the composition. We release our model weights and training and sampling code at https://github.com/openai/jukebox.”

OpenAI is hiring and invites any interested in contributing to apply. In the meantime, Jukebox is another significant step forward for AI.

  • Starlink Internet Will Enter Beta In Three of Months

Starlink Internet Will Enter Beta In Three of Months

Good news for internet users: Starlink’s satellite internet will enter private beta in roughly three months.

SpaceX’s Starlink satellite constellation will provide internet service to markets around the globe, including underserved areas. Unlike previous generations, where the satellites orbit some 22,000 miles above the Earth, Starlink’s satellites orbit a mere 340 miles high. Thanks to its low-Earth orbit, Starlink’s satellites will offer far higher speeds and very low latency. In addition, Starlink has received approval for 12,000 initial satellites, and 30,000 after that. As a result, Starlink will not experience the same bandwidth and throughput limitations that many existing providers have.

In a tweet, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said that private beta would begin soon, with a public beta a couple of months after that.

Private beta begins in ~3 months, public beta in ~6 months, starting with high latitudes

FCC Approves Up to 1 Million Starlink Ground Antenna

Starlink just passed a major milestone in its plans to provide broadband internet via a constellation of satellites: approval for 1 million ground antenna.

SpaceX, Elon Musk’s other company, has been launching the Starlink constellation of satellites in batches of as many as 60 at a time. Eventually, some 12,000 satellites will provide high-speed internet worldwide. In order for the system to work, however, there has to be a network of ground antenna to relay the signal to their final destinations.

According to CNBC, “the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has authorized SpaceX to begin rolling out as many as 1 million of the ground antenna the company will need to connect users to its Starlink satellite internet network.”

Each antenna will be roughly 19 inches across and should be fairly easy to recognize.

“It looks like a UFO on a stick,” said Elon Musk, according to CNBC. “It’s very important that you don’t need a specialist to install. The goal is for … just two instructions and they can be done in either order: Point at sky, plug in.”

Once operational, Starlink should be a good internet option for under-served communities, where cable, DSL, fiber or 5G are not viable options.

Tesla Scouting Central U.S. For Cybertruck Gigafactory

Tesla is scouting locations in the Central U.S. for a site to build a Cybertruck Gigafactory.

The Cybertruck is Tesla’s latest model, and the company’s attempt to upend the truck market. The Cybertruck has a futuristic design to compliment its name, and looks straight out of a dystopian movie. With three different models and priced to compete with Ford’s F-150, not to mention the attention the truck has already garnered, Tesla will likely have its hands full keeping up with demand.

Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk tweeted the company is looking for a suitable location for its new factory.

  • Musk Promises No Starlink Impact on Astronomy

Musk Promises No Starlink Impact on Astronomy

Elon Musk has promised that Starlink will have “zero” impact on astronomy amid growing concerns the satellites could impede researchers.

Starlink is the satellite constellation that Musk’s other company, SpaceX, is sending into orbit. SpaceX is launching batches of dozens of satellites at a time. The company has initial permission to launch 12,000 satellites, with the goal being to eventually launch as many as 42,000 satellites, far more than the 2,000 active satellites currently in orbit. The company’s goal is to use the satellites to provide high-speed internet access to under-served communities around the world.

Astronomers, however, have raised concerns that having that many satellites in orbit could severely impede research of the cosmos by preventing instruments from getting a clear view of the sky. As Digital Trends points out, this is especially a problem for long-exposure images, where the satellites show up as streaks. There are also concerns they could interfere with the radio waves astronomers rely on.

According to Forbes, at the 2020 Satellite Conference, Elon Must insisted that Starlink will not cause problems and the company will be aggressive in addressing any issues.

“I am confident that we will not cause any effect whatsoever in astronomical discoveries,” Musk said. “Zero. That’s my prediction. We’ll take corrective action if it’s above zero.”

Musk highlighted the company’s work on using a darkening treatment to minimize reflections, and raised the possibility of a “sunshade.”

“We’re launching a sunshade, changing the color of the satellite… aesthetically this should not be an impact.”

It remains to be seen if SpaceX can deliver on Musk’s promise, although the future of the company’s planned expansion likely rides on the outcome.

Tesla’s Elon Musk Supports Twitter’s Jack Dorsey Amid Ouster Push

Twitter’s Jack Dorsey is under fire from Elliot Management as the investor seeks to push him out as CEO.

Paul Singer, founder of Elliot Management, has managed to acquire a 4% stake in the social media company with the goal of pushing for a CEO change. At the heart of the issue is Dorsey’s time being split between the company he originally co-founded and his new company Square, where he also serves as CEO. There is also concern that Dorsey plans on spending several months living in Africa this year, further raising questions about his ability to focus on his role as Twitter’s head.

Twitter recently announced its first $1 billion quarter, illustrating the untapped potential the company has. According to Real Money’s Eric Jhonsa, many investors applaud Elliot’s moves, and believe Dorsey and upper management are largely to blame for Twitter being eclipsed by newer rivals.

At least one high-profile individual is coming to Dorsey’s defense, as Elon Musk has tweeted his support. Like Dorsey, Musk also serves as CEO of two companies, and that perspective likely plays a role in his support.

Just want say that I support @Jack as Twitter CEO. He has a good ❤️.

It will be interesting to see if Elliot Management succeeds in ousting Dorsey, or if he is able to rally enough support to stay.

  • Elon Musk Believes AI Development Should Be Regulated, Even Tesla’s

Elon Musk Believes AI Development Should Be Regulated, Even Tesla’s

Elon Musk, a long-time critic of AI, has come out in favor of government regulation of AI development, including at his own company.

While many working on AI believe it is the key to solving countless world problems, there are just as many who are convinced the technology will create far more problems than it solves, perhaps even bringing about the downfall of humanity. Musk has tended to be in the latter camp, even being quoted as saying “I have exposure to the most cutting-edge AI and I think people should be really concerned about it. I keep sounding the alarm bell but until people see robots going down the street killing people, they don’t know how to react because it seems so ethereal.”

That concern didn’t stop Musk from co-founding OpenAI, dedicated to the ongoing development of the technology, however. In fact, Musk’s concerns were one of the driving motivations, as he believed the technology needed responsible development, as opposed to being left in the hands of just a few companies—such as Google and Facebook—who have poor track records protecting user privacy.

Now, in response to a piece by Karen Hao in the MIT Technology Review that covers “OpenAI’s bid to save the world,” Elon Musk has tweeted his support of AI regulation.

All orgs developing advanced AI should be regulated, including Tesla

    — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 17, 2020

When a user asked whether that regulation should be enacted by local governments or on a global scale, Musk replied “both.”
