“X-Men: Apocalypse” Focus Is On Mystique, The Beast

X-Men: Apocalypse won’t be released until May of 2016, but die hard fans are already starting to get excited as speculation ramps up about the latest X-Men installment.

The third movie in the X-Men trilogy is highly anticipated after the immense success of X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: The Last Stand. Days of Future Past grossed over $746 million at the box office, making it the most successful X-Men movie yet.

Days of Future Past writer and producer Simon Kinberg recently revealed some juicy details of X-Men: Apocalypse to Collider.

Kinberg said that X-Men: Apocalypse is, indeed, the last of the series.

He also revealed that Jennifer Lawrence‘s Mystique will be at the center of the plot, which will be set in the 1980s.

As for the story behind X-Men: Apocalypse, he says,

“I will say that [X-Men: Apocalypse] is definitely the close of a trilogy for those First Class characters, which isn’t to say we won’t see them in future movies, hopefully we will, but it’s a completion of an arc for them. I think that the friendship between Erik and Charles, which has always been so integral to the franchise, is something we’re continuing to explore and hopefully deepen with Apocalypse.”

He continued, “And the relationship between Beast and Mystique is a really interesting one that we didn’t have a lot of time to explore in Days of Future Past, so we’ll have an opportunity to do more of that in Apocalypse.”

In the X-Men films, First Class can be seen as Erik Lehnsherr’s (aka Magneto) story and Days of Future Past can be seen as Charles Xavier’s (aka Professor X) story.

Kinberg said that he couldn’t reveal too much about the full plot at this early stage, but did say that the influence both Erik and Charles had on Mystique will be a major feature in X-Men: Apocalypse.

“Part of what’s really interesting about Mystique’s character is that she is, in some ways, the child of both Erik and Charles. She grew up with Charles and then she sort of became a woman with Erik, so her being the cross-pollination, if you will, of those two philosophies and those two men is something we can explore in the movie too.”

So exciting! What are you hoping to see in X-Men: Apocalypse?
