Twitter Begets First Twitter Christmas Song

People really love Christmas music. People also really love Twitter. It shouldn’t come as any sort of surprise, then, that some people might love both Christmas music and Twitter. Brenda Drumm might be considered one of them.

What started with a singular tweet about how great it would be to have a Twitter Christmas single has resulted in a cover that has currently topped the sales chart of iTunes in Ireland (Drumm and her collaborators live in Ireland). It’s worth focusing on the fact that the song is not just succeeding among other Christmas songs, either. That’s all songs in Ireland, meaning the Twitterxmassingle’s song, ‘Winter Song,’ is currently besting the likes of Rihanna, Florence + The Machine, Flo Rida, X Factor People and, well, everyone. That’s what I mean when I say it’s the number one song in Ireland among iTunes purchases right now: it’s currently earning more money in Ireland than any other song.

Through the use of the hashtag #twitterxmassingle, Drumm was able to organize volunteers to put together the single in a remarkably short amount of time. While enduring the holiday spirit, the response from the Twitterscape has been all things congratulatory and celebratory as the song continues to attract tons of attention:

In her personal blog, Drumm has listed all of the people who participated in #twitterxmassingle. Notably, there are 140 participants – as per the 140 character limit in a Twitter post (puns abound!).

Incredibly, all of the money made from the Twitterxmassingle’s success is being donated to the Neonatal Special Care Unit in the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin. Aside from making a dominant showing on Ireland’s Top Songs on iTunes charts, Twitterxmassingle’s single has been reported to be getting regularly airplay on radio stations in Ireland. The song is available for only 99 cents on iTunes, where you can also listen to a sample of the single.

Ol’ Biebs better watch out. As more and more media outlets take notice of this group the creators and supporters of Twitterxmassingle have hopes that their cover of ‘Winter Song’ will become the number one Christmas single of 2011.
