  • Amanda Knox Awaiting Appeal Decision

    Amanda Knox Awaiting Appeal Decision

Earlier today Amanda Knox tearfully told an Italian appeals court Monday that she did not kill her British roommate. She plead with the court to set her free so she could return home to the United States, after spending the past four years in an Italian jail.

During her speech paused for breath several times and visibly fought back tears as she spoke for 10-minutes. Shortly after her address was over, the court began deliberation.

Presiding Judge Claudio Pratillo Hellmann stated that the jury wouldn’t emerge from deliberations anytime before 1800 GMT (2 p.m. Eastern). The highly anticipated verdict is already garnering a huge audience online, as Amanda Knox is a trending topic on both Twitter and Google. People have turned to Twitter to share their thoughts on the Amanda Knox trial:

  • Twitter Expands Functionality of Promoted Tweets

The money-making ability of Twitter has long been a point of contention. Is the micro-blog site capable of producing ad revenue along the same lines as Google?

With the expanded capabilities of Twitter’s “Promoted Tweets” program, we’re about to find out just how successful the service can be when it comes to advertising. As detailed on their latest blog entry, “Promoted Tweets” are going to be more and more prominent on user time lines, whether you want them or not. Granted, the ads can, according to Twitter, be easily dismissed and judging from the examples, they aren’t intrusive at all. That being said, there’s still backlash whenever a popular service changes things for the sake of advertising money.

These promoted updates will start appearing in timelines as of now, and they are not limited to businesses, either. Non-profits seeking donations will also be viewable. The blog post has more:

That’s why starting today, we’re introducing a way to ensure that the most important Tweets from the organizations you follow reach you directly, by placing them at or near the top of your timeline. These Promoted Tweets will scroll through the timeline like any other Tweet, and like regular Tweets, they will appear in your timeline just once. Promoted Tweets can also be easily dismissed from your timeline with a single click.

The updated service is available to a particular group of Twitter members, as well. The idea is, if these prove to be successful, Twitter’s expanded advertising service will open up to additional members, although, there’s been no deadline set on that particular detail:

We’ll be rolling out and testing this new offering over the next several weeks with a select group of partners, including Best Western, Dell, Gatorade, Groupon, HBO, JetBlue, LivingSocial, Microsoft Xbox, Red Bull, Sephora, Starbucks, Summit Entertainment’s “50/50”, TNT and Virgin America among others — with more to come soon. During this phase, you may also see Promoted Tweets in your timeline from non-profit organizations you follow, including charity: water, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Room to Read, The American Red Cross and Water.org.

It’s assumed that these companies would have to be a Twitter account that’s being followed before the promoted tweets start appearing in your timeline, although, Twitter does not differentiate. There is, however, a detail about “when you decide to follow your favorite brand,” which leads one to believe that if you aren’t following Dell, HBO, Starbucks or Red Bull, et al, the promoted tweets from these companies — and more — won’t be appearing in your timeline.

  • Twitter Boasts 200 Million Tweets Per Day

Twitter Boasts 200 Million Tweets Per Day

Twitter has just released an impressive statistic on their blog, one that shows the company on a massive upswing. As of June, halfway through the year, Twitter is reporting 200 million tweets per day.

200 million. That’s a staggering figure, especially considering just a year ago they announced 65 million tweets per day. In January of 2009, the company announced that users were sending 2 million tweets per day. What was an impressive milestone then pales in comparison to this newest achievement. It also suggests a more exponential rather than linear growth in the social media site.

Along with this announcement, Twitter has provided a visualization of just what 200 million tweets would look like, in real life. They say that 200 million tweets equals a 10 million page book. This book, written every day, would take 31 years to read. The book would be as tall as 8.163 copies of Tolstoy’s War and Peace, or 1,470 feet.

In the blog post, Twitter has also provided us with a list of the most trending topics of the first half of 2011. They prove that the world is a bunch on Rebecca Black-loving fools.

    World events/News

    1. AH1N1 – Swine Flu
    2. Mubarak – former Egyptian President
    3. Easter – Christian holiday
    4. Cairo – capital of Egypt
    5. #prayforjapan – sentiment following the March earthquake and tsunami
    6. Chernobyl – site of nuclear disaster in 1986
    7. Libia/Libya – site of an ongoing civil war
    8. Fukushima – Japanese nuclear power plant
    9. William & Kate – Newly-named Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
    10. Gadafi – Libyan political leader

    Pop culture

    1. Rebecca Black – pop singer
    2. Femme Fatale – newly-released Britney Spears album
    3. Charlie Sheen – actor
    4. #tigerblood – hashtag popularized by Charlie Sheen
    5. Nate Dogg – rapper
    6. Anderson Silva – Brazilian mixed martial artist
    7. Tom & Jerry – famous cartoon
    8. Mumford & Sons – British rock band
    9. Bieber alert – referring to artist Justin Bieber
    10. Queen Gaga – referring to artist Lady Gaga

Of course, the only problem with the 200 million tweet figure is the question of original tweets. Twitter is full of bots who send out automated tweets. Do these factor in the 200 million? Also, does that number include retweets?

Even with these questions, it’s obvious that Twitter is growing fast. ComScore says that Twitter.com alone received 139 million unique visitors worldwide in May of this year. That’s a 54% increase year-over-year.

Twitter seems to have run into a little trouble, however, as it is being reported that they have been targeted by the Federal Trade Commission.

  • FIRED: Gilbert Gotfried No Longer Voice of Aflac Duck

Comedian Gilbert Gotfried is known for his censor-less humor when it comes to delicate subject matters, we all remember his infamous 9/11 joke, right? Now his crass sense of humor, this time via Twitter, has gotten him fired from Aflac, where he was the voice of their popular duck mascot. (It should be noted, Gotfried was not the voice of the Aflac Duck in Japan).

The tweets have since been deleted, but you can view two of them below…

I was talking to my Japanese real estate agent. I said ‘is there a school in this area.’ She said ‘not now, but just wait.’ 1 day ago via twitgoo · powered by @socialditto

Aflac Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Michael Zuna said, “Gilbert’s recent comments about the crisis in Japan were lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac, Aflac Japan – and, by extension, Japan itself – is part of the Aflac family, and there is no place for anything but compassion and concern during these difficult times.”

Just last week Aflac announced that the company was donating 100 million yen to the International Red Cross for disaster assistance to help with the tragedy over in Japan.

In the release, Aflac says that they will immediately set plans in motion to conduct a nationwide casting call to find a new voice talent for the duck.

  • Lakers Win Over Celtics Gets Twitter Record Tweets Per Second

Twitter announced today that it achieved a record 3,085 tweets per second last night as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Boston Celtics in the NBA Championship.

Ron Artest Trending TopicFor comparison, Twitter sees an average of about 750 tweets per second in a given day, and 65 million total tweets in a day. One has to wonder how much the Fail Whale has held these numbers back though.

Speaking of Fail Whales, Twitter has changed the message on the Fail Whale page slightly to link to the Twitter Status blog. The company apparently got the idea from a blog comment on TechCrunch. If you’ve been questioning the importance of blog comments, that’s something to think about.

Twitter also highlighted these goals from the World Cup as the most tweeted goals of the past week:

    1) Japan scores against Cameroon on June 14 in their 1-0 victory (2,940 TPS)

    2) Brazil scores their first goal against North Korea in their 2-1 June 14 victory (2,928 TPS)

    3) Mexico ties South Africa in their June 11 game (2,704 TPS)

As for the Lakers, Twitterers weren’t the only ones excited about the outcome of that game.

  • Twitter Shows Embeddable Tweet Example

    Twitter Shows Embeddable Tweet Example

Update: Twitter has made an update to tha post saying, "No, really. It’s very simple. Just a snippet of code you’ll be able to use to generate simple, selectable flat-HTML tweets like the one we used here."

Original Article:Twitter has a post up on its Media blog today talking about the use of tweets in articles. Basically, the company appears to be completely in favor of journalists and bloggers inserting tweets to articles (even pasting them in as images).

However, the company also claims to have a better way to do it, and that way will be revealed tomorrow. Twitter says a pasted-in image of a tweet is "a bit of a hack," adding, "We have a simple alternative to propose; it’s coming tomorrow."

One can only assume, as suggested here, that Twitter will indeed launch an embed feature (not unlike YouTube) to insert tweets with a snippet of code. It’s possible that Twitter could have something else in mind. Not all of the company’s ideas are entirely conventional, but that would make sense, would it not?

    Tweets to be embeddable?

It would certainly make things easier for those of us who do like to cite Twitterers in articles. Twitter has been well established as a channel for breaking news, and where important figures may offer bits of news, wisdom, or other generally interesting nuggets of text. Making it as easy as possible to quote them is in the best interest for all involved.

In fact, Twitter talks about how its solution would ensure quotes are accurate. Nothing wrong with that.

  • Number of New Twitterers Increases Significantly

Every month, WebProNews has been looking at Twitter’s growth in terms of new user registration and number of Tweets. In January, we looked at December’s numbers which showed an increase in tweeting frequency, as Twitter surpassed a billion tweets in a month.

In January, total tweets sent were the largest on record. However, they increased at 6.34% over December, which is the second lowest increase for the last twelve months. Only August saw a lower rate at -6.2%.

Still, new registrations saw a 32% month-over-month increase, the largest since April, and the most registrations ever in a single month at 9.4 million. These numbers were supplied by Matthew Daines, the lead developer for our own Twellow. He also provided the following graphs:

    Total Tweets in January

    Total Tweets in January

    Total Tweets in January

"The average tweets per user registration dropped slightly to 11.2, a 2.7% decrease from December," notes Daines. He reiterates his usual disclaimer, that these numbers in no way reflect suspended, abandoned, or inactive accounts.

The big increase in new user registrations has to be refreshing for Twitter. In November, Twitter saw a decline in the number of new Twitterers, a trend that had been going on since July. Finally, that leveled out in December. Now the number has grown significantly. It will be interesting to see if the trend continues into this month.

  • Twitter Sees an Increase in Tweeting Frequency

Each month we’ve been looking at Twitter’s growth in terms of new user registration and number of Tweets. Last month we saw a decline in the number of new Twitterers in November continuing a trend that began in July.

In December, however, new Twitter user registrations leveled out. Number of tweets grew significantly, and the number of tweets from new users grew as well, possibly indicating that people aren’t just signing up for Twitter and not using it.

These numbers were supplied by Matthew Daines, the lead developer of Twellow. He says, "Twitter surpassed 1 billion tweets for the month, a 30% increase over the 892 million tweets sent in November. They also surpassed the 100 million user registrations mark by adding 7.123 million new accounts, just barely reversing a negative trend in new user registrations over the last several months with a 0.1% increase over the 7.116 million registrations in November. The number of tweets per user registration jumped almost 21% over November to 11.5 tweets per registered user."

    Total Tweets in December

    Twitter User Registrations

    Tweets per User Registration

"For the year, Twitter registrations increased almost 545% over the the number registered on January 1, 2009, while tweets sent per month increased in December 1,514% over those sent in January," notes Daines. "Again, I have no idea how many of these accounts are suspended or inactive, so the actual number of registered accounts might be less than 100 million, but the numbers seem to show growth continuing for Twitter."

The numbers seem to suggest a good start to the year for Twitter. The company also recently made some new hires (including some former Googlers) and has some interesting things in the works, such as new features for businesses and the opening of its firehose, which will lead to a lot more innovation in Twitter apps. Things appear to be looking up for Twitter.
