  • Touchscreen Gloves: Many Options For Tech-Savvy Handwear

Due to the winter storms that have been making their way all across the United States these past few weeks, most people have opted to bundle up before venturing out, even for small amounts of time. Coats, hats, and scarves can make for a warmer experience, but tend to add bulk and weight that make it hard to move. Another problem plaguing folks as the winter weather wreaks its havoc; gloves that make it incredibly hard to text or snapchat your friends about how cold it is when you have a touchscreen phone.

Most retailers have hopped on this problem by making available touchscreen-compatible gloves. These nifty gloves can be picked up almost anywhere, ranging from places like Amazon.com and L.L. Bean to your local Walmart. This style of tech-savvy glove has become incredibly popular, even going so far as to make appearances of morning talkshows.

Some people aren’t willing to shell out the cash to buy a pair of touchscreen gloves, however. Or, perhaps they don’t want to exchange a pair of old, well-loved gloves for a new set. These same folks still want to use their touchscreens, though, so they have to summon up some ingenuity. One such example of this creative problem-solving lies in this Kickstarter campaign, created by Tony Yu. Yu has created a liquid solution that can be applied to any pair of gloves in order to make them touchscreen-compatible. The Kickstarter has already far exceeded its goal of $10,000, but still has five days left until the crowd funding ceases.

Another solution that’s appealing for the more crafty among us lies in touchscreen thread, which can be found online on Etsy and in your local craft supply store. These conductive threads can be knit or crocheted into the fingertips of handmade gloves, or can be sewn in to already existing pairs of gloves.

Touchscreen gloves are a definite must-have for any tech-savvy person during the winter months, and with so many options available, there’s sure to be a solution that works just right for you.

  • Touch Screen Mobile Phones Lead To Higher Satisfaction

Overall satisfaction among smartphone and traditional handset owners whose phones feature touch screens is significantly higher than owners that don’t have touch screens, according to a new report from J.D. Power and Associates.

Among smartphone owners that have a touch screen, satisfaction averages 771 on a 1,000-point scale, nearly 40 points higher than among those whose smartphone features other input methods.  Currently just over half of owners indicate their smartphone has a touch screen for navigation.

"Touch screens are ideal for those using their phone for entertainment, as the displays are generally larger and provide a richer viewing experience," said Kirk Parsons, senior director of wireless services at J.D. Power and Associates.

"It is critical, however, that manufacturers meet expectations with regard to providing adequate battery life, as these large displays can drain batteries very quickly. In addition, for customers to have a truly rewarding experience, wireless carriers must continue to provide problem-free, high-speed downloads, as customers rely on them to deliver content quickly and on the go."

Apple ranks highest in customer satisfaction among makers of smartphones with a score of 810, and performs well in ease of operation, operating system, features and physical design. RIM BlackBerry (741) trails Apple in the rankings.

    Smartphone-Satisfaction

The study found both smartphone and traditional handset owners are increasingly using their devices for entertainment and sharing media with others. Among traditional handset owners, 25 percent regularly send and receive multimedia and picture messages, an increase of 25 percent from six months ago.

Smartphone users are nearly twice as likely to share multimedia messages. In addition, 17 percent of smartphone owners with touch screens indicate the frequently download and watch video content on their device.

  • Mobile Phone Buyers Prefer Touchscreen Interface

While text messaging continues to be the top motivating feature for mobile phone buyers, American consumers are increasingly purchasing handsets with touch screens or QWERTY keyboards, according to the latest report from The NPD Group.

The report found all 10 of the top-selling mobile phones purchased in the fourth quarter of 2009 came with a touch screen, a QWERTY keyboard, or both.

Ross-Rubin"Regargless of whether they opt for a data plan, consumers want richer user interface options," said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis at NPD.

"The humble keypad is losing the race to optimize a handset’s surface."

Based on U.S. consumer purchases of mobile phones in Q4, the top 10 handsets were:

    1.    RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 83XX models)
    2.    LG enV3
    3.    Apple iPhone 3GS (both models)
    4.    Apple iPhone 3G
    5.    Motorola Droid
    6.    LG enV Touch
    7.    RIM Blackberry Tour
    8.    Samsung Intensity
    9.    Samsung Solstice
    10.    Samsung Impression

In Q4 2009 Apple, LG and RIM all declined in unit share, and Motorola’s Droid, even with its mid-quarter launch, was the fifth most purchased mobile phone in the U.S.

NPD also found that 46 percent of phones sold in Q4 had QWERTY keyboards (compared to 31 % in 2008) and 34 percent had touch screens (compared to 20% the prior year.)
