  • Delicious: Forget The Browser Extensions. Use The Bookmarklet.

It wasn’t that long ago that Delicious’ tombstone was all but chiseled. Then Avos (from the founders of YouTube) stepped in to save the day. This was generally applauded by users, when the announcement came last April.

But then in September when the site relaunched with its “stacks” concept, the applause died down. Hard core users were not happy with the direction the site was taking.

In November, Avos announced that it had acquired Trunk.ly to enhance link saving with Delicious. It collects all the links that users share or like on sites like Twiter, Facebook and LinkedIn, and stores them in a single place.

In a nutshell, that walks us through the relaunch of Delicious.

Now, the company has posted a message on the Delicious blog talking about browser extensions. It says:

In the past one of the ways of working with Delicious has been the browser extensions. For users of those extensions, it’s been frustrating that some of the features are not working. There’s also inconsistency between the features in different browser extensions. We want to clarify our position on the extensions and where we are going from here.

The original developers of the extensions did not anticipate Delicious users with thousands of bookmarks. As users noticed before the AVOS acquisition of Delicious, the extensions can at times transfer so much data that they cause problems with internet connections and browser stability. Rewriting the extensions to avoid these problems will take time and resources.

The challenge this creates is that our focus is on innovating and moving Delicious forward. We are re-building it into a site that once more attracts millions of people to enjoy the best content the web has to offer. How the Delicious site works and operates is changing. It will continue to grow and change more quickly and this is where we are directing our efforts.

The company goes on to say that it’s putting the extensions “on ice,” and that it will not develop for them in the near future, as they’re focused on the bookmarklet as the primary way to interact with the site, beyond the site itself, which it says it is also focused on.

If you’re already using extensions, and you’re ok with the way they’re already working, you can continue to use them. Just don’t expect any changes to them soon. It sounds like this could change in time though.

  • Delicious Acquires Trunk.ly

The new Delicious was launched back in September, and while some of us liked the direction the site was taking, I think it’s safe to say that the redesign was not a big hit with the majority of the site’s established community.

Avos (the company from YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen), which acquired Delicious from Yahoo earlier this year, announced today that it has acquired Trunk.ly to “enhance link-saving” with the site.

Trunk.ly itself was founded about a year ago by Tim Bull and Alex Dong, based on the concept of “making the bookmarking process more automated and supported by intuitive search.”

It collects all the links that users share or like on sites like Twiter, Facebook and LinkedIn, and stores them in a single place.

“It became clear from the first discussion with Trunk.ly’s founders that our visions for the future of bookmarking and discovery were closely aligned,” said Hurley, the CEO of AVOS. “Their technology and insights will accelerate link-saving and searching capabilities in Delicious.”

“We’re excited to join this stellar team and apply our bookmarking innovations to help Delicious users discover and collect the web,” said Bull.

Trunk.ly will be discontinued as a standalone service, and as part of the Delicious team, they’re immediately starting on integrating the technology into Delicious. The site will continue to operate for two months so users can move their links elsewhere. They’re providing an export tool.

It will be interesting to see if there is more positive reaction to Delicious as it integrates Trunk.ly.

  • New Delicious Not a Big Hit With Users of Old Delicious

I wasn’t already using Delicious before they unveiled the redesign this week, so I’m not missing anything that was there before. That said, I’ve known about Delicious for years. I’ve checked it out from time to time, but just never found it all that appealing. I’m guessing I wasn’t alone, which could be why it almost died before Yahoo sold it to the YouTube founders.

The revamp caught my attention, because I like what they’re doing with “stacks”. These are essentially collections of bookmarks based on a specific topic, displayed in an interesting way. I see a lot of potential for information discovery in this concept, and I think the guys who created the world’s biggest video site might be onto something again. I don’t know that it’s going to be YouTube big, but so far, I think it’s going to be worth using.

The stacks concept is explained simply in this video:

They still have some work to do, however. There needs to be better browser extension tools and mobile apps, though the mobile site isn’t terrible.

I’m viewing the site from the perspective of a new user, as if it’s an entirely new product, but of course this really isn’t the case. Delicious has been around for years, and regardless of Yahoo’s disinterest in it, it does have a solid community, and many of them aren’t thrilled about the new changes.

While at its core, the new Delicious serves basically the same purpose as the old Delicious – social bookmarking – it is now being executed in a pretty different way.

John Blump, a WPN reader, commented:

    – the main page is full with images?! information = 0
    – i saved links which do NOT appear anywhere (and other which do) ?!
    – when i want to save through my firefox add-on, every time i’m asked to login !
    – when i do save a link, i cannot use MY TAGS any more ?!
    – now i’ve got only 10 links per page ! the designer did not understand the aim is to get the most links per page NOT the least !

ReadWriteWeb blogger Marshall Kirkpatrick calls the new Delicious a “bitter disappointment.” But again, he also talks about how his site has used the service a lot.

Suman, commenting on a GigaOm post about the redesign, wrote:

I had a fairly bad experience with the new Delicious today. Just last week I had spent a few hours curating my saved bookmarks and organizing tags. The new Delicious doesn’t seem to know anything about it. All my effort is lost. There is no longer a bulk-edit function to redo my changes. I can no longer manage my tags – could find no option for deleting old tags. Some of my tags with special characters are now broken, I get a 404 when I try to access them. I am done. Goodbye Delicious.

A few more comments from Twitter:

srsly new Delicious? I don’t care if you try to “improve” things with stacks but here the heck is my list of tags? #notuseful #cranky 4 hours ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

@Delicious how can I get stuff I’ve saved in chronological order please NOT the number of saves please? That’s irrelevant to me. 1 hour ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

Also what’s happened to @Delicious networks? So useful but no sign of RSS and I hate seeing most popular saves at the top of my search 🙁 1 hour ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

It does seem pretty clear that the transition process didn’t go very smoothly, and that’s clearly irritated quite a few people. The comments in this article are just a small sampling of what’s out there. That doesn’t mean that people won’t like the new Delicious. Whether or not it can capture mainstream appeal reamins to be seen, and again, I think mobile apps could help with that. After using it for a day, I don’t think it’s perfect, but I expect they’ll continue to make improvements. I do think it has the foundation of something that could grow into a really interesting place to find content shared by yourself and others.

What do you think of the new Delicious? Were you using the old version? Let us know in the comments.

  • Reddit Becomes Independent of Condé Nast

Reddit Becomes Independent of Condé Nast

Condé Nast has spun out Reddit as an independent company, though its parent company still owns it all.

On the Reddit blog, Erik Martin writes, “This change is all about setting up reddit so that it can better handle future growth and opportunities. When reddit was acquired in October 2006 by Condé Nast, it was receiving about 700k page views per day. Now, reddit routinely gets that much traffic in 15 minutes. This explosion in traffic created technical, cultural, and organizational growing pains. reddit now has the kind of resources it needs to continue improving and supporting the community’s experience far into the future.”

As we reported last week, Reddit has been experiencing some tremendous growth of late. Over the past 15 months, it has tripled in size, the company said in a blog post. Since last May, we’ve grown from 7 million monthly unique visitors to 21.5 million. Our pageviews have exploded 4x to a staggering 1.6 billion pages served per month,” it said. “This growth brings new diversity, new opportunities, and new challenges to our communities. There are now over 6,500 subreddits with over 100 subscribers.”

“reddit Inc. is now owned by Advance Publications (which also owns Condé Nast), so even though the organizational shift is important, reddit is not really going anywhere. reddit Inc. will report to a Board and therefore have much more operational freedom than when we were a division of Condé Nast,” Martin explains. “Details are still being finalized.

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian is talking about the news in a Google+ post. He writes:

The investment of time and love changed my life the day Condé Nast acquired us, but I never could divest myself. Traffic continued to increase, but surged after I left to volunteer for Kiva in Armenia (correlation or causation, I’ll leave to you) and the site — now one of the top 50 in the US — needs the independence its fellow online titans enjoy.

reddit has become the engine for creating innovative and influential communities online. I’ll do everything I can to help and guide the reddit, Inc. team and our CEO to grow true to the vision we’ve had since that summer of 2005. As always, there’s no reddit without community. Thank you for bringing us this far, I’ll look forward to serving you as we discover what the future holds.

The company has actually started searching for a new CEO.

  • Delicious Lives On Without Yahoo, Courtesy of YouTube Founders

Yahoo announced today that YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen have acquired Delicious, and that they will keep the site up and running.

A statement on the Delicious blog says:

As creators of the largest online video platform, they have firsthand experience enabling millions of users to share their experiences with the world. They are committed to running and improving Delicious going forward.

Providing a seamless transition for users is incredibly important for both companies. Yahoo! will continue to operate Delicious until approximately July 2011. When the transition period is complete, your information will be moved over to Delicious’ new owner.

Starting today, we will ask you to login to Delicious again and agree to let Yahoo! transfer your bookmarks to the new owner. That way, you’ll enjoy uninterrupted use of the service and will keep your account and all of your bookmarks when we make the transition.

Everyone – your bookmarks are safe. We’re working to ensure a smooth transition. 47 minutes ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

Delicious will become part of Hurley’s and Chen’s company AVOS.

Yahoo said, “While we love Delicious (and our users love Delicious), we wanted to find a home for the product where it can receive more love and attention. We think AVOS is that place.”

Avos is said to be keeping the service up and running as is, but intends to add features going forward. This would certainly make more sense than buying it and letting it stagnate.

Users will have to go to an opt-in page to agree to AVOS’ terms of service and transfer their bookmarks. Information to be transferred includes: username, password, email address, first and last name, bookmarks, tags, notes, inbox items, tag bundles, tag descriptions, network members, subscriptions, blogpost jobs, and Twitter Auth credentials.

Those that wish to export their data can do do with this tool. If users don’t opt-in, they will no longer be able to use Delicious.

AVOS does say it is making a Firefox 4 Delicious extension a “top priority”.

The transition is expected to be complete in July.

  • Resources to Help You Migrate Away From Delicious

By now, you’ve probably heard the unfortunate news. Yahoo is sunsetting Delicious (and a few other platforms).

Folks are upset (or maybe disappointed is a better word). I’m one of them. I’ve come to rely on Delicious as my primary bookmarking system (not so much on the social side). And now I’m left looking for alternatives.

I’ve heard the chatter online yesterday and this morning, done a little digging and wanted to share some of the posts I thought highlighted the best options (as well as the process of downloading and migrating your existing Delicious bookmarks). Not sure what direction I’m going to go yet, but I’ll be weighing my options over the weekend.

  • No Real Social Media Plan? Try Starting With This.

Coming up with a social media plan isn’t always the easiest thing to do for businesses. There are so many factors that come into play, even beyond the landscape of communities that actually exist. For example, business leaders need to ask questions like: How much time should be spent interacting with social media sites? How many people should be representing the company on social sites? How much of their time should be dedicated to it? Should it be the full-time job of one person? The full-time jobs of more people? Only part of the job for a lot of people? Etc. Etc. Etc.

No matter how much time and how many resources are spent on your brand’s social media presence, more can always be done, so many will have to find they have to be selective in areas of participation and time spent. If your budget and time aren’t as restricted, you can build an enormous social presence around the web in the places that matter. Just remember, more can always be done. We at WebProNews certainly have plenty of room to expand and improve our own social strategy, and chances are you do too.

So, with all of that in mind, here are some ideas you can use to build your social presence.

    Twitter

    1. Post regular Twitter updates everyday. That doesn’t mean spam or post them constantly all day long, but there should be enough regularity to where your followers know you’re there and don’t forget about you. That said, don’t talk just to talk. Have something valuable to say. If you produce content, share your links. Some may not think it’s a good idea just to pump out your own links on Twitter, because it’s "about the conversation", but the way I look at is this: if someone is following me, they’re probably interested in what I have to say. If I’m writing articles, those are in essence, what I have to say. That doesn’t mean that it’s not about the conversation.

    2. You should engage in conversation on Twitter. Start conversations that don’t necessarily pertain to your own links. Listen to what others are saying, and join conversations with them, regardless of if they are directly related to your brand or not.

    3. Monitor your brand. Respond to @mentions (good or bad). Respond to direct messages.

    4. Post pictures and videos using services like TwitPic, TwitVid, Yfrog, etc. These things can help humanize your brand and increase engagement with others. They can be conversation starters. People like visuals.

    5. Create relevant lists. Create lists of other Twitterers that can provide value to others. You don’t necessarily have to, but it might be a good idea to create a variety of lists for subjects related to your niche. If you have a car blog, for example, you might have a list of car brands, a list of other car bloggers, a list for mechanics, a list of auto part vendors, etc.

    WebProNews on Twitter

    Facebook

    1. Have a Facebook Page for your brand. If you’re running a business, you need a Page, not just a personal profile. What you do with your personal profile is up to you, but your page should be up, and it should be promoted.

    2. Post regular updates throughout the day. Just like Twitter, I see nothing wrong with sharing links to your content here if you write articles or blog posts. I should note that this should be actual helpful content though – not just posts about why people should buy your product. Nobody wants to be a fan of a page that does that.

    3. Respond to comments on your Page. Get involved in conversations.

    4. Update your photos and videos. You don’t have to use third-party services for this on Facebook.

    5. Experiment with landing pages for your Facebook Page. It doesn’t have to go right to your wall. You can direct fans to any information you want to provide.

    6. You can use "notes" to put blog-style content right in Facebook should you choose to do so.

    7. There is a virtually unlimited number of Facebook apps. Look for ones that might be able to add value to your page and get people engaged in a helpful way. This will also take some experimenting.

    WebProNews on Facebook

    YouTube (and other video sites)

    1. If you create videos, you need to have them on YouTube and other video sites/networks. This is key for getting your videos out to a wider audience.

    2. These sites are also communities. Respond to comments and subscribe to others. Make friends in the communities.

    3. Push subscriptions to your channels. Keeping people subscribed means keeping them engaged as you continue to produce content. This can help build a following.

    4. Even if you don’t create your own videos, it doesn’t mean that you can’t get involved in conversations and comment on others’ videos.

    5. You can create "favorites" lists of videos that can be helpful, even if they’re not your videos (similar to the Twitter lists).

    WebProNews on YouTube

    MySpace

    1. MySpace may not be the current flavor of the week, but make no mistake – it’s still got a lot of users. Makes friends on MySpace with like-minded individuals and businesses, and expand your network here.

    2. Like anything else, keep up with your comments and direct messages, and engage in conversation on and off your own page.

    3. Have a professional-looking design for your page.

    4. Highlight your best content.

    5. Update your page regularly with new status updates, blog entries, videos, etc.

    Google Buzz

    1. Update Buzz regularly throughout the day with links and general conversation. Basically, treat it similar to Facebook or Twitter.

    2. Engage in conversation on and off your own Buzz posts.

    3. Spend some time making your Google Profile (which is connected to Buzz…and appears in Google search results) the best it can be. Provide links to your other profiles.

    4. Integrate other options that are available and applicable to you (Google Reader sharing, Picasa photos, Orkut, etc.)

    5. You can apply these to other networks like LinkedIn and FriendFeed as well.

    Digg, Reddit, Delicious, StumbleUpon, etc.

    1. Share links to others’ content on social bookmarking sites like these regularly. This will help you build a following.

    2. Have buttons to make your own content easy to share on these sites.

    3. Engage in conversations in the comments of links you share and links others share on these sites.

    4. Become friends with others like-minded and interesting people on these networks.

    Forums

    1. Find relevant topics in forums that are also relevant to your business and get involved in existing conversations.

    2. Start your own relevant conversations. Don’t just get in there and link to your content. It’s tacky and people will see through it. You can often provide your link in your profile anyway.

    3. If you have built up enough credibility in a forum, you might be able to share a link of your own from time to time in a legitimate fashion, like for example, if you wrote an article on the topic being discussed that helps to answer a question that is being asked.

    4. The more actively you engage in useful conversation, the more credibility you will gain, and you can come to be looked upon as an expert in your field.

    Blogs

    1. If you have a blog, keep up with the comments. Respond and stay involved in the conversations. If people disagree with you, which they often will, don’t make a big deal about it or try to prove them wrong. You might just be driving them away. Keep it constructive. Respectfully disagree and maybe elaborate on why you stand by your position, or if they change your mind, maybe tell them you hadn’t looked at things that way.

    2. Take the time to participate in conversation on other relevant blogs. You can basically think of blog comments as mini forums. The same rules pretty much apply.

    Photos

    1. As I said, people like visuals, especially current users of sites like Flickr and Picasa. Update photo sites regularly. Again, this can help humanize your brand and even open you up to different audiences.

    2. Participate in conversations in comments on and off of your own photos.

    3. Promote your presence on these sites. On your own site/blog, maybe have some links pointing to these accounts.

The Right Person/People for the Job

    1. You want to make sure you have the right person or people representing your brand in all of these communities. You don’t want someone that doesn’t really understand your company’s vision or position  to be out there giving people the wrong impression.

    2. Whoever is representing your brand should have a grasp on current news and strategies related to what your business provides. In other words, they should be knowledgeable. It wouldn’t hurt for the people involved to have a designated amount of time each day just reading news.

Finally, just keep everything up to date and current. Don’t let profiles go sour. Don’t let comments, questions, and messages sit there to rot. You’ve got to keep up with it all. So, with that in mind, don’t bite off more than you can chew in social media. Look at how much of this you actually want to do, and plan time and resources accordingly.

This is by no means all that can be done. There are plenty of other communities I didn’t mention, and probably a great deal more strategies that I didn’t touch upon. I think the things mentioned in this article should be a good start though.

What did I leave out that you would add? Please do so in the comments

  • StumbleUpon Starts Taking Video More Seriously

StumbleUpon has launched a new version of StumbleUpon Video aimed at personalized video discovery. The company says its recommendation system has been "fine-tuned" to better personalize the viewing experience.

"Instead of hunting from site to site for fresh, interesting videos, now you can watch content from across the web, all in one sleek, distraction-free, theater-like interface," says Monofsu, Community Manager at StumbleUpon. "It’s just you and the video you’re watching!"

"Remember to thumb-up and thumb-down your videos just like you do with web pages; the more you rate the videos you are watching, the better StumbleUpon can create a more personalized experience that becomes increasingly tailored to your preferences over time," says Monofsu.

    StumbleUpon Video

StumbleUpon will let users stumble through videos from specific destinations, such as YouTube, Vimeo, CollegeHumor and others. They just added Hulu and TED to the line-up.

The company is playing its new video service up as an alternative to TV:

StumbleUpon Video - Alternative to TV

Content providers should not overlook the service. Not only has StumbleUpon been proven to be a great provider of traffic, but its user base continues to grow (it reached 10 million in the summer), and it has since made its way to the iPhone and Android

As connected TV devices become more popular, services like StumbleUpon video stand to become more useful to consumers, and that means more opportunities to get your videos seen.

  • Digg Users Sure Dig Digg Competitor Reddit

Digg Users Sure Dig Digg Competitor Reddit

Update: Digg Founder Kevin Rose has made the following statements on Twitter:

We’re working hard to fix the source diversity part of the digg algorithm, more news soon…

We want to ensure diversity of sources, and we’re working on that now…

    Original Article:
Digg recently launched its long-awaited redesign, making the site much more appealing to publishers, as it is now easier to push content out to Digg users. Some Digg users apparently aren’t as thrilled about it.

There does seem to be some issues with the new Digg, as currently Reddit, a Digg competitor, is taking up the majority of Digg’s Top News (Hat Tip: Robin Wauters). It appears to be a backlash from Digg powers users against the new incarnation of Digg which lessens their influence.

    Reddit Dominates Digg

Reddit has its Digg account set up to auto-publish any Reddit stories from its RSS feeds (a luxury afforded to any publisher). Publishers who are getting their content shared on Reddit are benefiting doubly.

The other day, Ben Huh, CEO of the Cheezburger Network publicly offered to buy Reddit from Condé Nast, saying, "I believe that Reddit is one of the best communities I have seen on the Internet." There seem to be enough people that agree with Huh to keep Reddit link flowing on Digg’s Top News homepage.

Clearly, Digg is going to have to do something about the situation. It’s very doubtful that they’re going to let Reddit dominate the entire Top News section for long, particularly as the site is trying to reinvent itself, and spark a renewed interest.

Currently, there is no mention of Reddit on Digg’s Known Issues page.

  • Cheezburger Network Offers to Buy Reddit

Cheezburger Network Offers to Buy Reddit

Ben Huh, who runs the Cheezburger Network, has offered to buy Reddit. This comes after Condé Nast, which owns Reddit, rejected Prop 19 ads on the site (Facebook also rejected them).

Yesterday, Reddit posted the following message:

The reddit admins were just blindsided with the news that, apparently, we’re not allowed to take advertising money from sites that support California’s Prop 19 (like this one, for example).

Reddit says the decision was made at the highest levels of Condé Nast, and that "Reddit itself strongly disagrees with it, and frankly thinks it’s ridiculous that we’re turning away advertising money."

Enter Huh’s offer. On the site The Daily What, which is part of the Cheezburger Network, there is an email Huh wrote to Condé Nast, which says:

I have made this offer privately to a few people associated with Reddit, and I’ll say it publicly now:

I believe that Reddit is one of the best communities I have seen on the Internet. I also believe that Reddit would benefit from more resources and less corporate interference. We can offer all of the above. And we’d love to buy Reddit and all those pesky troublesome users that we love so much.

Condé, we’ll be waiting for a call.

Huh is a big fan of community. Here’s an interview WebProNews did with him not too long ago:

Reddit says its trying to convince "Corporate" that they’re making the wrong decision. Maybe Huh can convince them to make another decision entirely. Reddit doesn’t appear to be too happy under Condé. They recently began asking for user donations for support, because they were not getting enough resources from the company.

By the way, Reddit decided to run Prop 19 ads anyway.

  • Here’s an Invitation to the New Digg

Digg is giving out invitations to the new Digg. Specifically, it’s giving out handfuls of invitations to publishers to offer to their readers.

"We want to see all publishers experience the same success, so we’re providing every publisher, big or small, with a chance to invite their readers to the new Digg, before our GA launch," says Michael Cieri.

So, WebProNews has a thousand invitations to the new Digg (I like the new version better already). If you click this link, you can go to the new Digg, and you will follow WebProNews on Digg (that is a default of the invite link Digg is providing, but hopefully you’ll be happy to follow us anyway).

Digg has been talking about this new version since SXSW in March. Now you have an opportunity to experience it for yourself, ahead of the mainstream. Join, and feel free to Digg some WebProNews stories.

  • Digg Updates iPhone App – More Stable, Better Twitter/Facebook Integration

Digg has launched an update to its iPhone app, which comes with better Twitter and Facebook integration and improved stability.

Digg lists the following as key changes in the app:

    • Logging in to, or changing accounts on, Facebook or Twitter
    • Sharing stories through Facebook or Twitter without first logging in to that service
    • Digging a story without first logging in to your account
    • Running a search for a random string with no results
    • Navigating away from a story while it is loading
    • Saving a story or trying to access saved stories
    • Loading more user comments related to a story

The app was originally launched in March, then received an update in April, making some stability improvements. Those apparently weren’t enough, as most of the feedback Digg has received since then, has been about stability issues. We’ll see if they got it right this time around.

  • Reddit Sets a Price for “Gold” Version that it Used to Ask for Donations With

Last week, Reddit announced Reddit Gold, a paid version of its service that would cost whatever users were willing to pay. This was essentially Reddit’s way of asking for donations to help with its operating costs, and giving those donors a little something extra.

It didn’t take long for Reddit to declare the initiative a triumph, saying, "We’re getting a much-needed cash infusion."

Reddit Gold - Pay for the "pro" version of RedditNow Reddit already has over 9,000 subscribers for Reddit Gold. Subscribers now have access to new features like "Choose-your-own ad venture, userpage sorting, and "friends with benefits." These features are explained in detail by the company here.

Reddit has decided to set the price at $3.99 a month, saying they wanted to keep it under a dollar a week. After next week, they’re going to offer a discount bulk rate of $29.99 a year (or $2.49 a month).

Those that already signed up get prorated, and an extra two months free.

  • Reddit Taking Donations for Reddit Gold (and Gettting Them)

Reddit Taking Donations for Reddit Gold (and Gettting Them)

Update: Reddit is already calling the effort a triumph and says, "We’re getting a much-needed cash infusion."

Original Article: Reddit has announced Reddit Gold – a paid version of its service. It costs what you are willing to pay for it. As Reddit describes, "It’s a way of supporting reddit, boosting our bottom line and helping us afford faster computers and more employees (or was it the other way around?)."

In other words, Reddit needs help, and is asking for donations.

Reddit Gold - Pay for the "pro" version of Reddit While the idea of paying for an upgraded version of Reddit may not sit well with all Reddit users, one would expect the company’s approach of set-your-own-price to be more appealing than Reddit simply setting one itself. Gawker uses words like "begging" and "sad" in describing Reddit’s announcement, but at least it’s honest.

Reddit is owned by publishing empire Condé Nast, which owns such publications as GQ, Wired, Glamour, Vogue, and Ars Technica (to name a few), but that doesn’t mean said empire is willing to fork out too much cash to support the Reddit team’s needs.

Reddit’s Mike Schiraldi writes, "Whenever this topic comes up on the site, someone always posts a comment about how reddit is owned by Conde Nast, a billion-dollar corporation like Time Warner or Cobra, and how if they wanted to they could hire a thousand engineers and purchase a million dollars worth of heavy iron. But here’s the thing: corporations aren’t run like charities. They keep separate budgets for each business line, and usually allocate resources proportionate to revenue. And reddit’s revenue isn’t great."

    Again, at least it’s honest.

In May, Reddit got nearly a million unique visitors, according to Compete data.

  • Digg Updates iPhone App

Update: Digg announced several changes to the recently released iPhone app today. These include:

    • Closing the app on a Digg story page doesn’t result in a crash when reopening the app
    • A range of stability improvements allows the app to be used for longer periods without crashing
    • We’ve added an "open in Safari" option for viewing websites from the story pages
    • The app opens on the last page viewed when it was last closed

Original Article: Digg has launched its long awaited iPhone app, which was created by TapTapTap.

"This free app was designed to create a seamless browsing experience between Digg and the most popular content on the web, as chosen by the Digg community," says Digg’s Chris Howard. "We wanted to make it easy to discover interesting content on your phone and to easily jump into the conversations around that content. You can browse lists of recent content, search for the topics you care about, and save stories to check out later. Best of all, you can join in on the curation by Digging and burying stories and comments right from your phone!"

TapTapTap is even going so far as to hold a contest in which it is giving away fourteen Digg-branded iPad devices. They will be giving away one each day for two weeks. More details on that here.

The company says it will have an Android App available at some point. So far, no word on a timeframe for that or other mobile apps, but we’ll keep you posted if we learn more. The company will release updates for the iPhone app as it receives feedback.

  • Digg Dropping DiggBar, Unbanning Domains

    Digg Dropping DiggBar, Unbanning Domains

Just yesterday, news of Digg CEO Jay Adelson stepping down came out of nowhere, and Founder Kevin Rose was announced to be stepping in. It didn’t take long for some changes to start being made.

Today Digg announced that the Digg iFrame Toolbar is dead. "Framing content with an iFrame is bad for the Internet," said Rose. "It causes confusion when bookmarking, breaks w/iFrame busters, and has no ability to communicate with the lower frame (if you browse away from a story, the old digg count still persists)."

Kevin Rose - Digg Founder Already Making Changes as CEO"It’s an inconsistent/wonky user experience, and I’m happy to say we are killing it when we launch the new Digg (sign up for the beta here)," added. "That said, we will continue to iterate on our browser extensions for Firefox, Chrome, and IE. Look for seriously revamped versions of those in a few months."

The Diggbar was the subject of a great deal of controversy among webmasters as soon as it was launched. There were a lot of questions about where traffic was going, and Digg ultimately had to make changes to appease the crowd.

Rose also announced today that the new Digg will be unbanning all previously banned domains. "While we will apply automated filters to prevent malware/virus/TOS violations, no other restrictions will be placed on content," he said.

To re-iterate, the changes will not take place until Digg v4 is launched. According to Mike Arrington, Rose has expressed some amount of dissatisfaction with the new Digg in the past.

It should be interesting to see how much change actually comes to Digg with this new change in leadership.

  • Digg CEO Steps Down, Founder Steps in

Digg CEO Steps Down, Founder Steps in

Digg CEO Jay Adelson has announced he is stepping down from the position to pursue some entrepreneurial concepts of his own. He’s served for five years, and will be replaced in the interim, by Digg Founder Kevin Rose.

Jay Adelson - Former CEO of Digg "With the new Digg getting ready to launch, Digg Ads doing well, our sales force growing, our hiring ramping, and the company maturing well beyond its startup phase, I feel that now is the right time," Adelson said in a statement.

"The entrepreneurial calling is strong, and I am ready to incubate some new business ideas over the next twelve months," he added. "As the economy exits a very deep recession, I believe that it is an excellent time for new companies to develop."

Rose offered a statement of his own. "While I’ll miss working with Jay day-to-day I am excited to be taking on the role of Chairman and acting CEO, driving Digg forward on our promise to enable social curation of the world’s content and the conversation around it. We’ve been super busy on the product side getting ready for the upcoming Digg redesign and delivering our mobile apps for the iPhone and Android." More about these here and here.

  • New Digg Buttons Keep Traffic With Publishers

Digg has launched some new Digg Buttons and a widget generator for publishers, which the company refers to as updated tools to improve speed, usability and flexibility of integrations for publishers. A representative for Digg tells WebProNews the updated tools are "one of the many steps we’re taking in advance of the official release of the new version of Digg to make the user experience more inviting and the publisher experience more customized and measurable."

The new version of Digg was recently unveiled at SXSW.

Features of the new buttons include:

New Digg Buttons launched - keep traffic with publisher– Dynamic display of live Digg count (a feature Digg says statistics have shown to increases likelihood of user interaction)

    – The buttons no longer take users to Digg (traffic stays on the publisher’s domain)

    – Faster load time

    – Customizable look and feel (includes new "medium" button size and an unstyled option so a publisher can create their own custom designed Digg button)

    – Related stories from the publisher’s domain to users that click the button

Existing Digg buttons will auto-upgrade over the coming weeks, Digg says, but they recommend that publishers review the new documentation for optimization tips.

With the widget, headlines now link directly to publisher content with the Diggbar, as opposed to Digg’s own page. There are more customization options that don’t require publishers to use the Digg API. There are tabs and columns that let publishers add multiple columns to a widget, as well as make a double column widget. Thumbnails are attached to each story, when available, and if there isn’t enough content to display, the widget will backfill with other relevant content from the same domain.
