  • ‘Final Girl’ Horror Film Supercut Gets You Ready For Halloween

Tricks, treats, pumpkins, costumes, and horror movies are just some of the necessary staples of Halloween, and what better way to get you the mood than with a supercut highlight reel that focuses on the some of the horror film industry’s most famous “final girls.” For those who don’t know, a “final girl” is the female protagonist who is still alive at the end of the horror movie, and she also one who usually bests the bad guy, be it Freddy Kruger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, or a H.R. Giger-designed xenomorph. With that in mind, that should give you some idea of the characters that make an appearance in Vulture.com’s nifty video.

According to Vulture’s post, the term “final girl” was coined in 1992 by Carol J. Clover, a film theorist and professor of film studies, and her term fits perfectly. Unfortunately, the scenes are annotated with their appropriate movie , which means the “can you name all of the movies” game has been called off. With that in mind, did they leave anyone off? From here, the list seems pretty comprehensive; although, I question the inclusion of The Descent’s heroine. In the original ending, she didn’t make it out of the cave alive. Unfortunately, American audiences were treated to a tamer, happier ending.

If nothing else, this remix/supercut should give you a few more additions to your last second Halloween movie-watching marathon, and that’s always a good thing.

  • Soccer Hooligan Brawl Gets The David Attenborough Treatment

A couple of weeks ago, a YouTube video of a soccer fan brawl hit the trend cycle. This one, however, isn’t just the traditional footage of fans pounding on each other in the stands until the security guards intervene. No, instead what we were treated to was an old-fashioned gang fight, but instead of rival neighborhoods fighting for turf, these were soccer fans of opposing teams meeting in the middle of street for some hand-to-hand combat fun. Posted by the Hooligan Wardrobe collective, the video has crossed viral boundaries.

Check it out if you haven’t seen it already:

According to the title, the hooligans in the fight are fans of GAIS Gothenburg and Helsingborgs IF (the red-clad individuals). While there are a lot of folks on screen, as far as YouTube fight videos go, this one is pretty tame. It hasn’t, however, stopped some soccer bloggers chastising the hooligans for further lowering the perception of soccer fans, calling the actions deplorable.

Whatever your position on sports fans beating the crap out of each and videoing it for posterity, the video in question has indeed reached trend status. This, of course, means remixes are the next step, and lo and behold, we have a mash-up using the fantastic narration of David Attenborough to provide the play-by-play. The results are pretty spectacular:

I have to be honest, I’m having a hard time telling if the narration is simply well-timed clips from previous Attenborough efforts or if someone is doing a damn good imitation. There is also a third possibility, but surely not, right? I mean, that’s not really Sir David Attenborough having a good time with some bored soccer fans is it?

  • Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ Remix Hits the Web (Listen to It Here)

As promised, Daft Punk has released their own remix of “Get Lucky,” the breakout track from their new album Random Access Memories. As it stands, the French duo has decided to make this one a lengthy effort – clocking in at over 10 minutes long.

The track is up and available on streaming services, including Spotify.

We knew this was coming, as Daft Punk announced the “Get Lucky” remix back in May. There’a also an indication that they won’t stop with that track. It’s very likely that other Daft Punk remixes of other Daft Punk tracks from Random Acces Memories are on the way.

“We’re working on some mixes ourselves,” they said. “So, yes, there will probably be Daft Punk mixes of Daft Punk. Usually, we never mix ourselves, that’s something we feel we’re interested in doing this time.”

Check out the new track below:

The single release of Get Lucky broke Spotify streaming records, as did the full RAM album.

  • Mister Rogers Wants to ‘Sing Along’ in New PBS Auto-tune Remix

About a year ago, PBS Digital Studios broke the internet with their auto-tuned remix of classic Mister Roger footage entitled “Garden of Your Mind.” It was the first in their “Icons Remixed” series, and PBS later put the autotuner on other PBS mega-stars like Bob Ross, Julia Child, and Reading Rainbow’s LeVar Burton.

Today, Mister Rogers is gets another remix. A sequel, or “b-side” if you will.

Like the first PBS Icons Remixed featuring Mister Rogers, this one comes to you courtesy John D. Boswell, aka melodysheep. Check it out:

  • Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky,’ As Performed by Michael Jackson

Well, this is one way to shake off those Monday morning blues. Thank you, internet, for this. Just imagine what could have been.

Here’s what it would sound like if Michael Jackson was the one featured on Daft Punk’s new single “Get Lucky.” Just tweak the pitch and speed a little bit and Pharrell Williams quickly morphs into the King of Pop. As you would expect, it’s incredible.

“So I found out just by pitch shifting Get Lucky, the track sounds a lot like Michael Jackson. The ‘He-hee’s,’ ‘Woo’s,’ ‘shamonas’ and other MJ sounds developed on their own when the track sped up,” says creator Maim Ixed on YouTube.

For those of you who ran “Get Lucky” into the ground this past weekend with repeated plays (and who didn’t?), here’s a way to get over the repetition and keep listening to the track:

Daft Punk’s first new (non-soundtrack) song in about eight years has seen incredible but predictable buzz since it (officially) dropped last Friday morning. It not only flew up the iTunes charts, but reportedly set the record for the biggest streaming day for any single track on Spotify in both the U.S. and the U.K.

  • Relive the Best Movies of All Time (According to IMDb) in 150 Seconds with This Supercut

Though it oftentimes leans toward the popular and recent, the IMDb’s Top 250 would be a pretty solid springboard for anyone wanting to get into film, or anyone trying to round out their film knowledge. Now, you can see all 250 films (plus 53 more) in the incredible 2 and 1/2-minute long supercut.

“This list does change infrequently, and I began the project over a month prior to November 1, 2012, so attention to my haters…Yes…I KNOW some of these movies are not on the top 250. 53 Titles to be exact (as of 11/1/12). However, none of my haters can tell me that any of these 303 titles do not exist on IMDB,” says creator Jonathan Keogh.

Check out a lot of amazing films in rapid fire below:

Awesome, right? It’s amazing that you’re able to identify so many of the films with only second-long clips. I guess it’s a testament to the superb editing.

  • Mitt Romney’s Best (and Worst) YouTube Moments, Remixed

With the Republican National Convention underway, What’s Trending thought it would be a good time to compile some of the most popular Mitt Romney-themed videos into one big supercut.

“Mitt Romney accepts the Republican nomination for President at the GOP Convention in August 2012. So what better time to look back at Mitt’s long and storied YouTube history than right now? Included in this timeline of Mitt’s Greatest Hitts are his official campaign ads and announcements, parody music videos, impressions of Romney and even Romney remixes and auto-tunes,” they say.

And what we get is neither an endorsement or an attack on Romney, but simply a history of how the candidate has been represented on YouTube, based on how many views were garnered by specific videos from 2007 on. Of course, the majority of the popular Romney-centric videos come from 2012 – and the parodies reign supreme.

    Check it out below:

Romney is set to speak at the RNC on Thursday night, as he wil presumably accept the Republican Nomination for President. I wonder if he’ll say anything worthy of getting on the next Mit Romney YouTube mashup.

  • Another Day, Another Awesome Breaking Bad Remix

Funny, catchy, impressive, inspired; everything a great remix should be. Today, I present the best Breaking Bad remix that you’re likely to hear this week.

I say this week because not only are remixes popular on the interwebs, but Breaking Bad remixes in particular have really taken off as of late. It’s understandable – I mean, it is the best show currently on television. But there is something truly special about taking a show that’s so serious, dramatic, and unnerving and turning it into something light and carefree.

Take for instance the recent Breaking Bad/Seinfeld mashups, or the mildly more amusing Breaking Bad/Mentos ad mashup. Both excellent, but neither as good as this.

Courtesy YouTube user placeboing, check it out below [obvious spolier tag for those who haven’t watched seasons 1 and 2]:

  • Julia Child Remix Wants You to Keep on Cooking

First, Mister Rogers explored the Garden of Your Mind. Next, Bob Ross took us on a trip through his Happy Little Clouds. And now, PBS Digital Studios is back at it with another entry in their “Icons Remixed” series.

This time it’s chef, author, TV personality, and OSS operative Julia Child that’s getting the remix treatment.

This creation comes courtesy of John D. Boswell, aka melodysheep. He also constructed the first two remixes in the series.

    Check it out below:

PBS says that this remix is in honor of the late chef’s birthday, as she would have been 100 years old today. Google is also celebrating her birthday with a new Doodle. Child died on August 13th, 2004 at the age of 91.

I think we’re all in agreement that LeVar Burton of Reading Rainbow really needs to be the next PBS icon to get his own remix.

  • Mr. Rogers Autotuned: Twitter Reacts

    Mr. Rogers Autotuned: Twitter Reacts

Mr. Rogers autotuned: If you’re one of the few unfortunate souls who has yet to hear “Garden of Your Mind”, an official collaboration between PBS Digital Studios and John D. Boswell, then you’re seriously missing out on one of the eeriest autotune songs currently available on the Internet. Using clips from several episodes of Fred Rogers’ iconic PBS series “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”, Boswell (aka melodysheep) has crafted something truly remarkable and, believe it or not, weirdly mesmerizing.

Here’s what PBS had to same about the project:

When we discovered video mash-up artist John D. Boswell, aka melodysheep, on YouTube, we immediately wanted to work together. Turns out that he is a huge Mister Rogers Neighborhood fan, and was thrilled at the chance to pay tribute to one of our heroes. Both PBS and the Fred Rogers Company hope you like John’s celebration of Fred Rogers’ message.

As Josh predicted yesterday, it hasn’t taken very long for this sucker to go viral. After giving the song one, two, or twelve spins, check out some Twitter reactions to this loving tribute to a man who helped define and shape many a childhood in his day. You’ll find the aforementioned comments positioned beneath the embedded video. Enjoy!

I was a huge Mr. Rogers fan growing up, and still am. Love this new remixed, groovy, autotuned tribute: http://t.co/YkLMu1nM

  • Remixing Kevin Durant’s Doodle Jump Commercial

If you watch any kind of sports-related events on television, there’s little doubt you’ve seen Kevin Durant’s Doodle Jump/Sprint Unlimited Data commercial. The concept is you, the user, missed Durant’s game-winning shot because you spent what was left of your data plan downloading the popular Doodle Jump game.

Well, it’s been remixed to include last night’s game-winning layup that Durant hit against the Los Angeles Lakers. Granted, not a lot of attention has been paid to it, thanks in large part to Kobe Bryant’s surly reaction to his team essentially choking away a Game Two win. I can’t say I feel bad for Kobe, but I do understand why ESPN, et al, is so focused on that as opposed to Durant’s shot. A pissed-off Kobe Bryant always makes for good TV, but then again, so does Kevin Durant scoring. With that in mind, let’s take a look at what’s been done.

    First, the original commercial:

Now for the Durant’s basket that put his Oklahoma City Thunder ahead for good:

And now, the remix that incorporates the two:

Too bad there are so many butthurt Lakers fans watching these videos. Case in point:

    fuck OKC.

    And:

take this off, wtf man. fuck the thunder.

  • Mary J. Blige Cripsy Chicken Remix

Mary J. Blige Cripsy Chicken Remix

Yesterday we shared with you a story about a Burger King commercial featuring Mary J. Blige. The commercial was pulled for what Burger King is calling “licensing concerns”, though many people are blaming the criticism the commercial has received for negative stereotyping.

A new remix of the song has been posted by brooklyn producer MeloX, who said “[The] commercial was tooooo hilarious for me not to mess around with.”

For those you that missed it, here is the original video.

Burger King has since apologized to the singer, saying the ad was unfinished and should never have been released. Blige has said she understands why fans are upset, and that the unfinished commercial doesn’t come across as planned.

Burger King says they hope to have the finished product done soon, and still plan to have a final ad on the air.

People on the comments section of YouTube and on Twitter have mixed views about whether the commercial comes off as racist or not, but most people agree it’s corny, ridiculous, and unintentionally hilarious.

http://t.co/PALBuJEF << comments at bottom of article says it all! Agree. Media is creating a racial divide, making something outta nothing(image) 53 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

I guess I will be the lone negro that didn’t see anything wrong with the Mary J. Blige Burger King commercial. It was corny but racist?(image) 44 minutes ago via Facebook ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

I don’t think the Mary J. Blige Burger King commercial was racist, it was just dumb! I can’t stop laughing at it. hahah #bkcommercial(image) 2 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Ok I don’t get the Mary J Blige Burger King uproar! Yes it’s the stupidest thing I have seen. Yes Mary looks like a sell out. But racist?(image) 5 hours ago via Twitter for iPhone ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

I agree with the non-racist stance. This is the year 2012. We should have been past associating fried chicken and race stereotyping a long time ago. Fried Chicken is delicious; i think we can all agree on that at this point.

As for the remix, I think it’s hilarious someone has already come out with one, and the fact that it’s called “crispy soy chicken”, come on. It’s also pretty impressive that it already has more YouTube hits than the original. Forget about finishing it, Blige, someone else has already done it for you.

  • The Simpsons 500th Episode Intro In Slow Motion

Last Sunday, Fox’s long-staying The Simpsons hit its 500th episode plateau, and one of the absolute treats of the milestone episode was the introduction segment. As you’re probably aware, each Simpsons episode begins with the group making their way to the family couch. The route in which the Simpsons arrive at their destination is up to the creators, and because there’s a different situation for every episode, that means there have been 500 different intros to the show.

As indicated, perhaps the highlight of the 500th episode was the trip down memory lane intro, one that showed us snippets of the the previous 499, all in under a minute’s worth of running time. Because that’s a short amount of time to cram that much “data” into, YouTube user acjarsen08 had our collective backs and slowed the intro down to a little over four minutes, giving us the opportunity to catch some of the clips we may have missed when 500 aired:

It’s clear ac’s efforts were appreciated. Out of the 13,000-plus views, the video has over 100 likes and only 2 dislikes.

In other news, it’s hard not to wonder just how long this video will last. There isn’t a whole lot of “official” Simpsons content on YouTube, and considering Fox’s ironclad-like grip it keeps on its content, it wouldn’t be surprised to see this video get pulled, especially as it gets more and more views.

With that in mind, get it while it’s hot.

  • Everything Is a Remix Exposes the Fallacy of Copyrights Gone Wild

Before we get too far, it should be noted that this author does not believe all entertainment should be available on a free for all basis. While that sounds good in theory, there’s nothing wrong with seeing an artist get their just desserts, normally in the form of monetary reward, for creating something that’s enjoyed/consumed by the masses.

That being said, the subject of fair use has been soiled by such entities as the RIAA and the MPAA.

An example of this would be Walt Disney making beautiful art of such stories as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Alice In Wonderland. Disney played absolutely no part in the creation of these stories, but he did adapt them, giving the public classic films that have stood the test of time. With that in mind, let’s see what happens if one of us — members of the general public — try to make use of characters from the The Lion King.

For an idea of what would happen, see the story of the Air Pirates versus Disney, and try applying what happened then with what you know of the RIAA and its strong-arm legal tactics.

With that in mind, the concept explored in the Everything is a Remix videos shows just how much influence past works have on new ideas, especially in regards to movie-making. As pointed out by SlashFilm, Everything is a Remix is a project being done by Kirby Ferguson, a New York-based filmmaker.

The goal of the project is to show just how much influence — or outright concept theft — older works play a part in movie-making, and after watching the video, it’s pretty clear that without the concept of fair use, what we see as inspiration could be categorized as outright copying. Too bad these concepts are not part of the thought process when it comes to copyright enforcement from the RIAA and the like.

Over at the site, it’s explained that the series will be presented in a four parts, with three of them already available. There’s also been a new video posted, and it breaks down The Matrix, pointing out numerous occasions where the Wachowskis were either inspired by another movie, and/or directly copied a concept or a particular fight scene.

Be sure and take a look, because it’s an awesome video:

It’s pretty clear there aren’t that many original thoughts left in regards to visual entertainment, which is another reason the concept of fair use should be upheld, if not defended as staunchly as the rights of the musicians the RIAA protects. If you’d like to see the rest of Kirby’s work, be sure and check out the installments of his Everything is a Remix project, all of which are available on his site.

If it doesn’t force you to take a look at the current conditions in regards to the entertainment industry’s vise-like grip on content, I’m not sure anything will.
