  • Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame Coming to iOS

Ubisoft today announced that it is bringing a new Prince of Persia game to mobile devices later this month. Titled Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame, the game will be available on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android devices on July 25 for $2.99/£1.99.

The game is an updated version of Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame, which was released for MS-DOS back in 20 years ago. Instead of a straight port, Ubisoft has updated the game with new graphics and controls designed for touch screens. In addition to the visual upgrade, the game itself has been updated for today’s gaming standards. The game is now less trial-and-error based and features a new combo system has been implemented. It also features leaderboards, achievements, and (of course) Facebook integration.

Though The Shadow and the Flame may not be the Prince of Persia game that fans were waiting for, it could, at the very least, be a sign that Ubisoft is beginning to consider the IP once again. With the main story of Assassin’s Creed having mostly run its course, it might make sense for Ubisoft to bring back Prince of Persia for the new console generation. In the meantime, the developer diary released today features Ubisoft developers talking about why and how The Shadow and the Flame has been improved from the game it is based on:

  • Master Copy of Prince of Persia Discovered

Creator Jordan Mechner has found the long lost original Apple II master copy of his classic Prince of Persia. It had been lost for ten years.

The 3.5″ disks of the original game were discovered by Mechner’s father (composer for the original Prince of Persia game) while doing some spring cleaning in his New York home. Mechner’s father sent him a junk box, filled with old computer stuff, completely unaware of what was inside.

“My Dad called from New York to tell me he was doing some spring cleaning and had shipped me a carton of old games and other stuff of mine he’d found in the back of a closet. The carton arrived yesterday. My jaw dropped when I saw what was inside,” Mechner wrote in his blog. “I’ve been searching for (Prince of Persia), off and on, for the past ten years, pestering everyone from Doug Carlston to Danny Gorlin and everyone who ever worked at Broderbund, and finally gave up hope of ever finding.”

Plans are now in place to recover the code and find some way to read it on modern machinery. Mechner may have some trouble, armed only with a Macbook Air.

He promises to post the results on his blog the moment he extracts something usable.

@ManMadeMoon Does the phrase “Prince of Persia Source Code” bring to mind “Apple II” or “Two Jake Gyllenhaal movies”? http://t.co/8J99WLHH 19 hours ago via Echofon ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

  • Prince of Persia Versus The Real World

How many of you have dreamed of living in a video game world? Or, perhaps taking aspects from your video game and converting it to real life? Considering the current popularity of Skyrim, if that happened now, there’d be a helluva lot of dragons flying around.

Let’s say, however, the game you wanted to bring to life was classic 2-D side scroller, from an age when pixels ruled the day? If you’re name is Karahat, and you live in Israel, you might make a Prince of Persia real-life homage, complete with the pixilated head and arms to capture the look and feel, almost perfectly.

    Take a look:

The two minute, twenty second gem of a video captures the classic charm of the 1989 classic, going well beyond a mere pixilated mask for the main character to wear. The editing provides the necessary feel from that classic era of gaming, and the soundtrack makes for the perfect topper to this excellent piece of user-generated content.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much information about the video’s creator. If you have any additional information concerning Karahat, feel free to share. Until then, enjoy the incredibly creative video he uploaded.

Hat-tip to Dueling Analogs for point this out.
