    GoDaddy Down For Some Users

Update: GoDaddy says service is completely restored, and that the outage was not the result of a hack. Full statement here.

GoDaddy has been having some trouble today, with users taking to Twitter to vent their frustration at sites all over the web being down. Some are indicating the issue is primarily one affecting the East Coast.

More (including the latest) on this developing story here.

Apparently, the company is on the case. GoDaddy tweeted:

It’s still unclear what exactly has happened. We’ve contacted the company for comment, and will update accordingly.

Update: Anonymous Twitter accounts are now taking credit (h/t: TechCrunch):

In the meantime, here’s a sampling of what’s being said on Twitter. You can see the tweets pouring in rapidly, if you simply go here. Clearly, this has had a major impact on the web.

  • Xbox LIVE Down, Microsoft Aware of the Issue

[UPDATE] Xbox LIVE is back up, though Microsoft has not yet commented on the outage.

    [ORIGINAL]
It’s not just you – Xbox LIVE is down. If you’ve called off work to nurse your Labor Day hangover and were hoping to kick back for some Xbox multiplayer action, you may be out of luck.

The Xbox LIVE service is currently down, according to Microsoft’s own server status page. The status for Xbox LIVE states that users “may experience difficulties” signing into Xbox LIVE on their Xbox or through the xbox.com website. Microsoft is working on a fix, though. From the server status page:

We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience

The cause of the Xbox LIVE service disruption is unknown, and Microsoft has not issued an official statement yet. This is the same LIVE service that is set to be rolled into Windows 8 with its release, though some gamers have concerns that it could mean difficulties for indie developers.

Note that Xbox LIVE is the only service that is currently down. The Xbox LIVE marketplace is still up, as well as the matchmaking service. No apps seem to be affected either, and the Zune service is still active, though that will probably be renamed soon, as the Zune brand is quickly being put out of its misery.

Updates will follow if service resumes, or if further information from Microsoft is forthcoming.

  • Wikipedia Goes Down: Internet Freaks Out

Update: Wikipedia now appears to be back in working order.

Either way, this was quite a reminder of just how much the Internet has come to rely on Wikipedia. What a scare!

As Cinderella once said, “You don’t know what you’ve got, ’til it’s gone.”

Wikipedia is down right now, and people are not realizing how much they depend on it for information. There’s a reason that it often appears at the top of Google search results (and powers much of Google’s Knowledge Graph).

While there are often jokes about Wikipedia’s accuracy, a study (albeit, commissioned by Wikimedia) came out last week finding that the site compares favorably to other encyclopedias.

Wikipedia is currently showing the following message:

    Wikipedia down

With the site down, people are freaking out. Here’s a sampling from Twitter:

  • Twitter On Outage: Not How We Wanted Today To Go

On Thursday, Twitter experienced a massive amount of downtime for all web users, and mobile users were experiencing some additional problems.

Twitter had initially updated its status blog to say, “Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.”

The company later updated that to say, “Update: The issue has stabilized and all services are restored.”

Unfortunately, that was not the end of it, as outages continued.

While everything seems to be back in order (fingers crossed), Twitter’s Mazen Rawashdeh ended up writing on the official Twitter blog:

Not how we wanted today to go. At approximately 9:00am PDT, we discovered that Twitter was inaccessible for all web users, and mobile clients were not showing new Tweets. We immediately began to investigate the issue and found that there was a cascading bug in one of our infrastructure components. This wasn’t due to a hack or our new office or Euro 2012 or GIF avatars, as some have speculated today. A “cascading bug” is a bug with an effect that isn’t confined to a particular software element, but rather its effect “cascades” into other elements as well. One of the characteristics of such a bug is that it can have a significant impact on all users, worldwide, which was the case today. As soon as we discovered it, we took corrective actions, which included rolling back to a previous stable version of Twitter.

We began recovery at around 10:10am PDT, dropped again around 10:40am PDT, and then began full recovery at 11:08am PDT. We are currently conducting a comprehensive review to ensure that we can avoid this chain of events in the future.

For the past six months, we’ve enjoyed our highest marks for site reliability and stability ever: at least 99.96% and often 99.99%. In simpler terms, this means that in an average 24-hour period, twitter.com has been stable and available to everyone for roughly 23 hours, 59 minutes and 40-ish seconds. Not today though.

It’s true that users are seeing the Fail Whale and experiencing other issues that might surface such an image a lot less than they used to.

While the outage was certainly an inconvenience for a lot of people, based on a lot of the discussion around it, I don’t expect Twitter to lose many users over it. Sorry, Google+.

  • Twitter Down At Various Times Throughout The Day, Google+ Has Fun

As previously reported, Twitter has been experiencing some downtime today. It seems to be coming and going. Meanwhile, users have been flockig to other social networks to talk about how Twitter is down. That includes Google+, where there is no shortage of chatter about it.

Buzzfeed went so far as to say Google+ users are being “total dicks”. I’m not sure I’m seeing that kind of hostility, but some are certainly making light of it.

Here are some of the Google+ updates we’ve seen:

Perhaps it’s the popularity of the video at 163 views (at the time of this writing).

Here’s the actual video. It’s gold.

  • Twitter Goes Down, Subway Cookies Take The Punishment

Twitter has been experiencing some downtime today. The company acknowledged site issues on its Status Blog, and shortly thereafter posted an update, indicating that the problem was resolved:

Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.

Update: The issue has been resolved and all services are currently operational.

However, the site seems to be having issues again. Between downtimes, we noticed quite a few people were talking about it on Twitter. They were saying things like:

I was going to embed some more tweets about what people were saying, but since I can no longer access Twitter, that’s a bit hard to accomplish. Perhaps I’ll update with more in a bit.

I did notice quite a few people indicating how lost they are on the Internet without Twitter. Some didn’t seem to know what to do next. Some just deemed the web boring without Twitter.

An AFP article quoted one user as saying, “Twitter broke, my life has no meaning anymore.”

I don’t know about that, but I’m sure businesses relying on Twitter aren’t very enthusiastic about the situation. We’re not even seeing a Fail Whale to remind us how cute it is when Twitter has outages.

Update: It seems to be back in working order. So, as promised, here’s some more reaction from Twitter:

Update 2: Looks like it’s down again.

  • Facebook Outage Killed Some Retail Sites’ Performance

Facebook Outage Killed Some Retail Sites’ Performance

On Thursday night, Facebook experienced a major worldwide outage that lasted, in some cases, for a couple of hours. Things have been less-than-perfect for users since then, even after Facebook released a statement saying that everything should be a-ok. Users were still reporting this morning that Facebook was either slow to load or down altogether, although things seem to have cleared up for most users as of the writing of this article.

Not only was the outage a problem for Facebook and its users, but apparently it also hurt some major e-commerce sites that sat “spinning” while waiting for resources from Facebook to load. It appears that sites that were affected were ones that connect to Facebook’s open graph, display the “like” or “share” button, etc. According to web monitoring company Catchpoint, sites with Facebook plugins experienced “massive performance and usability issues” during the outage.

Some of the sites affected belonged to retailers like JCPenney, Urban Outfitter, L.L. Bean, Teleflora, and 1-800-Flowers.

    From Catchpoint:

The issue affected mostly web sites that have placed the Facebook code inline in their page. From an end-user perspective the “spinning hourglass” never stopped while loading the web page because the browser waited and waited and waited for resources to www.facebook.com to complete which they never did. Worst case scenario users might have seen pages hanging or functionality of the page was impaired.

By contrast, sites that loaded content before making third-party requests didn’t show any problems on the user end.

Here’s a graph that they provide showing how one of the aforementioned retailers was affected:

For webmasters, this kind of thing is a reminder that outages of sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Google can affect their sites in a pretty serious way. Of course, Catchpoint makes a point to say that it’s more of a “wake up call” for site owners to be prepared and build their sites in a way that expects this sort of thing.

As far as the outage goes, many speculated that Anonymous may have been behind the attack. They responded via Twitter with an emphatic no:

Note: Anonymous would never attack Facebook, we have said this many times. Why would we attack a tool that many anons use to spread info?

  • Facebook Down Again After Overnight Outage

It appears that Facebook is having some problems this morning, only a few hours after straightening everything out following an outage that lasted for more than two hours on Thursday night. That outage affected a good number of users across the world, and people took to Twitter to complain (and crack IPO jokes, as would be expected).

By late Thursday evening, most of the problems had been worked out. Facebook issued a statement that said:

“Earlier today, some users briefly experienced issues loading the site. The issues have since been resolved and everyone should now have access to Facebook.”

But it appears that the problems aren’t quite over – or at least they have resurfaced. Website activity site downforeveryoneorjustme confirms that “it’s not just you.” Facebook.com looks down from their eyes.

Personally, Facebook is loading for me, albeit a bit slow. Folks are once again taking to Twitter to comment:

Is Facebook down yet again? Yikes. #socialmedia

  • Facebook Pages Not Letting Businesses Post Links

It seems to be a rough day in the social media world. A lot of Twitter users have been experiencing problems on and off, and some businesses with Facebook pages have been unable to post links throughout the day.

We noticed this ourselves at first, but then when searching the Twitterverse, saw others complaining about it as well.

Here are a few of those complaints. Let us know if you’ve been experiencing problems yourself.

I wonder how much web traffic this is costing everybody. Facebook can be a tremendous source of not only traffic for sites, but engagement with user around a site’s content. If Facebook doesn’t get this problem fixed soon, there will no doubt be plenty of irate businesses.

Regular status updates do appear to be working, as do links from personal profiles.

We’ve reached out to Facebook, and will update if we receive a comment.

  • Twitter Search and Timelines Are Having Issues

UPDATE: As of 3:45 EST, things seem to be back to normal.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: You might have noticed that Twitter is acting a little strange lately, and Twitter has just acknowledged the problem on their official Twitter Status blog:

Some users may be experiencing issue in viewing search results and home timelines . Our engineers are currently looking into this issue.

Our office is having issues with both search and home timelines. Any search simply loads the Twitter background by no results. If you try to access any user’s timeline, their unique background will load but the timeline is nowhere to be found.

Hopefully, things will get worked out sooner rather than later – we’ve all got Twittering to do.

  • Call of Duty Elite Down For Many Users, Problems Seem To Be Varied

Call of Duty Elite, the social gaming network launched around Modern Warfare 3, hasn’t gotten off to the best start. The service, inundated by membership requests, has been unable to get itself fully operational since MW3 launched last Tuesday.

Originally plagued by registration and login issues, the problems have spread to actual functionality of the service. The huge demand by players to track stats, make matches, and organize clans has crashed servers. The service is currently still given “intermittent” status on the official Elite status site, which acknowledged the problems late last week. After blaming high traffic on the failures, they announced that they would throttle access while they worked on the problems –

We are also going to temporarily limit access to Elite services on both the console applications and website while we build additional capacity and scale. We’ll look to increase access to greater numbers of users as soon as possible

In order to assuage frustrated gamers, Elite offered a free month of premium service to existing premium users and extended the Founder eligibility period (where new MW3 players can sign up) until the end of November.

Here’s the latest from the Elite status page:

As we continue to keep everyone updated on the steps we’re taking here to get more of you into Call of Duty Elite, we are aware that some users have been denied entry into the service once they have input their age. We recognize that in regions around the world player age requirements vary. We are happy to say that we have identified some solutions to this issue. Our team is working on the technical changes required, and we expect to announce the details soon on this change. Meanwhile, if you purchased MW3 and were not able to register for Call of Duty ELITE, we wanted to make you aware of this pending change, and we thank you for your patience.

We remain committed to taking all of the necessary steps to increase our capacity for all our users. The Call of Duty Elite team will keep you updated at callofduty.com/elitestatus. Continue to check back here for overall Elite status or for a complete list of FAQs, check out our customer service site. We will also give you updates regularly through the official Twitter account, @CallofDutyElite.

We’re working around the clock 24/7 to resolve things, so thanks again for your patience.

That Twitter account looks like it’s been hit with a load of questions, and it looks like it’s doing its best to answer them. From the wide variety of complaints, we can see that the Elite outage is affecting multiple parts of the service.

Twitter user xMimisReal looks to be having the same problem that this writer is having:

    @CallOfDutyElite Dear CoD Elite.
Im trying for days now to enter my Elite Account, but i always get the Throtled error.

According to feedback we received on a previous WebProNews article on the topic, the problems are prevalent and varied. And many users are beginning to lose patience. Will Elite have to offer more than what they’ve already offered in order to assuage frustrated players? Let us know what you think.

  • Call of Duty Elite Not Working? Hey, Here’s a Free Month of Premium

UPDATE: Elite service still seems to be intermittent for many users, who are reporting a wide variety of problems. They are taking to Elite’s Twitter account to post their issues.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Modern Warfare 3 has been out for a few days now, and it looks like, for the most part – so far so good. It’s received nearly unanimous acclaim from critics and has broken all kinds of sales records by taking in $400 million on launch day. So apart from Battlefield players spamming review sites with negative reviews, it looks like Modern Warfare 3 is going to be one in a long line of commercial successes for the Call of Duty franchise.

The only problem is with the Modern Warfare 3 companion service, Call of Duty Elite. The service, which is basically a social network for COD gamers, allows players to track stats, share recorded match videos, and find players with their interests and skill level for matchmaking.

But if you’ve tried to access the service over the past few days, you know that it’s not really working. And the users that are able to register their accounts are finding that there are some serious flaws with the stat tracking and other services.

Personally, I’ve been unable to connect at all. The one time that I was able to register my account and link my gamertag, I was instructed to log back in and Elite said that my username did not exist. Since that time, I’ve been unable to sign in at all.

Apparently I’m not alone in having issues, and the Elite team posted an explanation to the Elite status page:

At launch, our registration and login systems were crushed by gamers trying to enter the Elite site at the same time. We have now fixed the registration and login systems, but we have found that the greater than expected demand is crashing servers. We’re immediately deploying multiple additional servers to beef up the system. We are also going to temporarily limit access to Elite services on both the console applications and website while we build additional capacity and scale. We’ll look to increase access to greater numbers of users as soon as possible.

They also promise premium subscribers an additional month of the service free of charge, and they will extend the “founder eligibility” where new members can sign up for premium by one month.

As of right now, the service indicator reports intermittent service.

Have you been having problems with Call of Duty Elite? Let us know in the comments.

    Here’s the full statement:

Since Tuesday’s launch, Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer has been working great. In fact, the amount of players online is even higher than what it was this time last year for Black Ops. Have fun — we hope you continue to enjoy MW3 to the fullest.

However, on Call of Duty Elite, we are having trouble scaling the service to meet demand. Many of you are trying to get in and unfortunately, you can’t right now. You’re frustrated, we know it, and we know we need to fix it. Our teams have been working non-stop to identify issues and resolve them as quickly as possible. Again, these issues have no impact on the performance of the game.

We want to share with you what we know at this time and what we are doing:

At launch, our registration and login systems were crushed by gamers trying to enter the Elite site at the same time. We have now fixed the registration and login systems, but we have found that the greater than expected demand is crashing servers. We’re immediately deploying multiple additional servers to beef up the system. We are also going to temporarily limit access to Elite services on both the console applications and website while we build additional capacity and scale. We’ll look to increase access to greater numbers of users as soon as possible.

As more users log into the Elite system, you may find that the wait to get into Elite is longer than you expect. We know how frustrating that is and we appreciate your patience. Many of you are now able to see your player card and stats, but if you don’t see all your recent matches or career summary, don’t worry — your gameplay data for your entire careers in both Black Ops and MW3 is safely stored, and it will all be available to you once these issues are resolved.

And for our premium members who are Founders, know that granting your status and delivering your in-game benefits in MW3 is a priority. Also, to ensure that every premium member receives their full money’s worth, we are immediately and automatically extending your membership to Call of Duty Elite by 30 days at no additional cost. If you’re still considering becoming a premium member, we’re going to extend Founder eligibility until the end of the month, and you will also receive the additional 30 days of access.

  • RIM Faces Lawsuit Over BlackBerry Outage

Remember that 4 day outage that left BlackBerry owners all over the world without BlackBerry Messenger, email and in some cases, web browsing? Did you think that it was over when RIM apologized and threw free apps at the affected customers?

Those of you that felt that the free apps weren’t enough to assuage some BlackBerry users have been proven correct, as a suit filed in Quebec is seeking class action status on behalf of “all residents in Canada who have a BlackBerry smartphone and who pay for a monthly data plan” but because of the outage, were unable to access their messages and emails.

As a quick refresher, the BlackBerry outage began around October 10th, when reports emerged from parts of Europe, Africa and The Middle East that folks were having trouble with some of their services. In a couple of days, that outage had spread to North America. BBM, email, and web browsing were the three things most affected by the outage.

As services were slowly being restored, co-CEO of RIM Mike Lazaridis took to YouTube and issued a video apology to BlackBerry customers. He said that they had failed on their goal to provide reliable communications and that they had let many people down.

Shortly after that, RIM announced that they would be giving BlackBerry customers free apps in compensation for the outage. The free apps list included things like SIMS 3, Bejewled, and Speech Translator Pro. All in all, over $100 worth of apps have been offered for free.

Many were skeptical that this display would be enough to satisfy disgruntled users – that some would want real monetary compensation for the multiple days that they were unable to use the BlackBerry network. This is exactly what this lawsuit is asking for.

The Respondent has failed to take action to either directly compensate BlackBerry users or to indirectly compensate BlackBerry users by arranging for wireless service providers to refunds their customers and to take full responsibility for these damages

When you think about it, compensation for 4 days of data services being down doesn’t really amount to much money. I guess for some people, it’s the principle of the thing.

Time will tell if more suits like this are filed in other countries. Were you affected by the Blackberry outage? Do you feel like RIM did enough with the free apps and apologies? Let us know in the comments.

  • Blackberry Apologizes For Outage With Free Apps

Last week, Blackberry suffered service outages that affected millions of users all across the globe. Unsurprisingly, people found this to be anywhere from a minor to a significant annoyance – as functionality was affected in different ways for different people.

Most saw some sort of outage in web browsing, email or BlackBerry messenger.

On Monday, users in Europe, Africa and The Middle East began experiencing issues – and by early Wednesday the problems had spread to the Americas. American BlackBerry users began reporting outages during the wee hours on Twitter and Facebook.

Services were slowly restored in the following days, and RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis issued a YouTube apology to BlackBerry users, saying that “we let many of you down.”

Now, those affected BlackBerry users learn what RIM plans to give them for their troubles: Free apps.

A selection of premium apps will become free on the BlackBerry App World in the upcoming weeks, and they will remain free for the rest of 2011. Here’s the current list of apps that will be free to all users:

    • SIMS 3 – Electronic Arts
    • Bejeweled – Electronic Arts
    • N.O.V.A. – Gameloft
    • Texas Hold’em Poker 2 – Gameloft
    • Bubble Bash 2 – Gameloft
    • Photo Editor Ultimate – Ice Cold Apps
    • DriveSafe.ly Pro – iSpeech.org
    • Speech Translator Pro – iSpeech.org
    • Drive Safe.ly Enterprise – iSpeech.org
    • Nobex Radio™ Premium – Nobex
    • Shazam Encore – Shazam
    • Vlingo Plus: Virtual Assistant – Vlingo

According to RIM, there are more apps to come. When it’s all said and done, there will be over $100 worth of free apps available to users.

RIM’s enterprise customers will also be receiving on month of free enhanced tech support.

“We are grateful to our loyal BlackBerry customers for their patience,” said Lazaridis. “We have apologized to our customers and we will work tirelessly to restore their confidence. We are taking immediate and aggressive steps to help prevent something like this from happening again.”

Will a handful of free apps be enough to fix the damage that has been caused by the outage? There’s no doubt that some users will be disappointed, and would prefer some sort of monetary reimbursement.

The backlash on social media channels has been pretty severe. Plus, it was a bad week for BlackBerry to crap out – with Apple releasing iOS 5 and the iPhone 4S.

Are you a BlackBerry user? Is this apology package enough to make up for the trouble last week’s outage caused? Let us know in the comments.

  • BlackBerry Outage Persists But Is Improving, CEO Issues Apology

BlackBerry Services are beginning to be restored in countries around the world following an outage that began in Europe and The Middle East and by Wednesday had spread to the Americas.

BlackBerry users all around the world have had problems browsing the web and using BlackBerry Messenger for the past few days. Users also reported issues with their email services, and yesterday it was revealed that a huge backlog was responsible for the intermittent service.

For the U.S., RIM says that email services are up and running and they are working to clear any remaining jam in order to get it going at full speed. As far as everyone else goes, RIM says that “BlackBerry services are operating well globally.”

On Twitter, some people continue to complain about problems accessing certain functions of their BlackBerry devices, but at least it seems like things are on the mend.

Founder and co-CEO of RIM Mike Lazardis has issued a video apology to BlackBerry customers, posted on the BB YouTube channel.

“Since launching BlackBerry in 1999, it’s been my goal to provide reliable, real-time communications around the world. We did not deliver on that goal this week – not even close. I apologize for the service outages this week – we’ve let many of you down,” he says.

He says they are working hard to “stabilize the system” and that they have seen “steady improvements.”

As you can see, he predicts some “instabilities” as things return to normal.

What do you think about this apology? Is it enough? It sure was a pretty bad time for BlackBerry services to crap out in you’re RIM. While millions of users are taking to the web to vent their frustrations and complain about how their BlackBerrys won’t do anything they need them to do, you have Apple launching iOS 5 and their brand new iPhone 4S Friday morning.

How have you been affected by the BlackBerry outage? Let us know in the comments.

  • BlackBerry Services Down For North American Users

A disruption that has been going on for three days now has spread from Europe and the Middle East to North America today, as users are experiencing problems with many BlackBerry services.

On Monday, European, Middle Eastern and African users began to experience spotty functionality of email, internet browsing and BlackBerry messaging services. It appears that those problems have jumped the pond.

Last night, RIM gave this explanation to users –

The messaging and browsing delays that some of you are still experiencing were caused by a core switch failure within RIM’s infrastructure. Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested. As a result, a large backlog of data was generated and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service as quickly as possible. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused to many of you and we will continue to keep you informed.

And today they acknowledge that BlackBerry users in the Americas are now feeling the outage –

BlackBerry subscribers in the Americas may be experiencing intermittent service delays this morning. We are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and we apologize to our customers for any inconvenience. We will provide a further update as soon as more information is available.

BlackBerry users are taking to Twitter to express their frustrations, and “Dear BlackBerry” is a trending topic in the States –

  • BlackBerry Services Down For Some Users

BlackBerry users throughout Europe, the Middle East and parts of Africa have been experiencing problems with their service since early this morning.

It looks like the problems that people are having involve accessing the web, BlackBerry messenger and roaming in Europe. Some users are also reporting the inability to access their email. Apparently, all of these users are tied to one data center maintained by Research in Motion, or RIM – the folks behind the Blackberry devices.

Some of the carriers in the areas are blaming RIM for the outage –

@Lukiemartin Hi Luke, the issue is with RIM and nothing to do with T-Mobile. Sorry. 1 hour ago via CoTweet · powered by @socialditto

  • Facebook Broken for Some Users

    Facebook Broken for Some Users

Given that Facebook has become so integrated with the web at large, and in many people’s lives (wait until the Timeline feature rolls out), it can really suck when Facebook isn’t working like it’s supposed to. It can suck for general users, and it can suck for businesses who rely on it for one reason or another, whether that be people logging into their site, using their app, sharing their content, or gaining traffic to their site.

The web relies a lot on Facebook, and with its recent announcements that may just turn out to be the case even more than ever. To put it simply, it can make people a little uneasy or downright frustrated when things aren’t working.

Facebook, while not experiencing a total outage by any means, does appear to be having some issues today. A lot of users are complaining about different ones on Twitter.

    Here are some recent tweets:

Facebook is having all kinds of trouble loading right now. Wonder if Timeline is coming tomorrow. #FingersCrossed 2 minutes ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

Speaking of #Fail, EVERY SINGLE picture on #Facebook is showing up as a broken image link. #sigh 3 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

A lot of the complaints, like the last couple above, are about broken images. That’s not good, considering that Facebook dominates online photos.

Some users have even reported not seeing the ticker feature any longer or that they have been seeing the old version of the news feed. That’s actually been going on since yesterday. We reached out to Facebook this morning for comment, but have yet to hear back.

  • YouTube Down For Some Users

Update: 04:37 EST: It’s back up for us.

I have to say this is the first time I’ve seen this happen, and I’ve spent a lot of time on YouTube since I’ve been writing for WebProNews. I’ve had random videos not work, but right now, nothing is working.

The home page is coming up, but when I try to go to a video page, I get the message pictured above or just “Http/1.1 Service Unavailable”.

And it’s not just for us. Here are some complaints from Twitter:

Youtube is down. THE END IS NEAR!!!!! 4 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Too bad YouTube info isn’t available on Google’s Apps Status Dashboard.

I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come as YouTube becomes a more important player in home entertainment. I wonder how many movie rentals and live streams are being interrupted right now.

It does seem to be working for some people:
