  • Boy, 3, Wrecks Aunt’s Jeep, Runs Home

A Myrtle Creek, Oregon toddler crashed his aunt’s Jeep into a home after knocking it out of gear. The three-year-old boy then ran home to watch cartoons.

At about 7 p.m. Thursday, a Myrtle Creek police officer had noticed the boy alone in the Jeep, and approached him after not seeing any adults in the vicinity. The boy told the officer that his parents weren’t home, and that his babysitter, identified as 22-year-old Brennan Pennington, was asleep at the boy’s residence. The officer contacted Pennington, and warned her that the boy had access to the keys to the vehicle, and was able to unlock it.

At around 7:30 p.m., police were called back to the scene, after a neighbor reported witnessing the Jeep crashing into a house.

Authorities said the three-year-old again commandeered the vehicle, and knocked it out of gear. Witnesses watched the Jeep roll down the street through an intersection, hop a curb, roll through a yard and crash into a house.

Here is a recording of the 911 call a neighbor made after he witnessed the incident with the Jeep:

After the wreck, the diaper-clad boy hopped out of the Jeep and scampered home, according to Myrtle Creek police.

A police officer found the boy nonchalantly watching cartoons in his house, “as if nothing had ever happened.”

The boy’s aunt and owner of the Jeep, Amy Mayberry, refuted the police report that the toddler ever had the keys, and claimed that Pennington was in the bathroom during the time of the incident, and not passed out. Pennington was cited for failing to supervise a child, and the family of the toddler made a civil compromise with the owner of the damaged house.

No one was injured in the incident.

  • 2014 Jeep Cherokee? New Model Surprises

The familiar Jeep Cherokee that has been around for decades has given us some new surprises in its 2014 models. The new look is the first thing you’ll notice, quite different than the Jeep you are used to seeing. It’s been upgraded to look sleeker and more modern – loaded with updated safety features, and much more pleasant to handle on the road.

It also has the first nine-speed automatic transmission. Using a platform that’s based on cars from Jeep owner Fiat of Italy.

Cherokee offers safety equipment that’s usually only seen in luxury cars and includes lots of extras such as unique storage nooks, and seats that slide much further forward and back than most other SUVs. The legroom in the back has been enhanced, giving passengers over 40 inches of space.

The Cherokee, just as before, offers 4×4 off-road options, and is a heavier body than most others in its class. However, it is not standing up to the others in gas mileage.

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee’s best mileage rating from the federal government is 22 miles per gallon in the city and 31 on the highway with the standard, 184-horsepower, 2.4-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine.

Cherokee also offers an optional, 271-horsepower, 3.2-liter V-6, with mileage at 19 city and 27 highway.

The 2014 Cherokee has a starting retail price of $23,990 for a front-wheel drive Sport model with the turbocharged four cylinder and nine-speed automatic. They don’t offer a manual transmission though.

A 4×4 Cherokee starts at $25,990 with the 4-cylinder engine.

The lowest retail price for a 2014 Cherokee with the V-6 is $26,985, and this isn’t the 4×4 model. Buyers can step into a four-wheel-drive, V-6 Grand Cherokee for as little as $31,790 with the Laredo trim. Jeep offers the Limited and Summit trim as well; the Overland model is a bit pricier, at $47,190. These starting costs are for standard equipped models.

The safety additions are awesome. Standard safety equipment on all 2014 Cherokees includes antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front and rear seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and front knee airbags. A rearview camera is either standard or optional on all models.

Trailhawk and Limited models are available with a large option package that includes a forward collision warning system (with automatic brake intervention in potential collision situations), a lane departure warning system that will give the steering wheel a nudge if you veer out of your lane on the highway, and blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alerts.

See all of the new models at your local Jeep Cherokee dealer – you might just drive off with one.

  • Study Reveals Brand Preferences by Political Party: Are you a BMW or a Jeep?

Buyology Inc.’s new study takes a look at subconscious brand attachments and reveals some interesting contrasts between Democrats and Republicans. What they found is that sometimes the values of your political party give rise to certain brand preferences.

Not surprising, of the over 200 brands included in the study, the two parties mostly disagree about which are the best, but there was some consensus. Both Democrats and Republican agree that Coca-Cola is their favorite beverage. They also both indicate that Visa is their number one credit card of choice.

Who is number one in technology and gadgets? They both chose Apple and Google as the top most desired brands (I am sure most would agree). Beauty products, which seems like an odd place to find consensus, had them both agreeing that Olay is their favorite brand.

Gary Singer, Founding Partner & CEO of Buyology Inc. comments on the interesting results of the study:

“Both candidates and brands have never fought harder for our affection and our votes,”

“It’s never been more important to understand why people make the choices that they do. Brands can learn a lot by having a deeper understanding of the deep-seated connections that drive our decision-making.”

So, now for the contrast you’ve all been waiting to hear about; are you a Jeep or a BMW? But I think you already know the answer to that one. If you’re a Republican, you most likely prefer a BMW, and if you’re a Democrat, you most likely desire a Jeep. Almost cliche, is it not?

Republicans prefer Sharp for electronics and Democrats prefer Sony. As far as gaming systems, Republicans prefer XBOX and Democrats prefer Wii. Coffee? Starbucks for the Democrats and Dunkin’ Donuts for the Republicans.

Most Democrats chose the NFL as their most desired sport, while Republicans chose MLB. The most desired restaurant? Republicans said Subway and Democrats said Wendy’s.

As far as what they watch on television, Democrats like Animal Planet, and Republicans prefer the History Channel. Most Democrats prefer Progressive for insurance coverage, while Republicans typically go with Allstate.

Interesting results. As with any good research study, the results seem to reflect what many could have guessed, especially when we are talking about automobiles and television programming preferences. I doubt this knowledge will help them do a better job running the country, but it’s still fun to take a look at.

It makes me wonder, what’s going on with families that have a BMW and a Jeep in the driveway?
