    iPhone Survives Skydive Drop

Taking your iPhone with you on a parachute attempt is nothing new. In fact, YouTube has an assorted collection of people filming skydive attempts that were shot with the iPhone’s video camera. However, having a phone fall out during the jump, and “live to tell the tale,” that is, be usable again, is not part of what mobile device makers would call the norm. Nevertheless, what we have is a story of the indestructible iPhone, as told to CNN.com.

As indicated, iPhones and skydiving go hand-in-hand, like so:

But to have one survive a fall of at least a few thousand feet adds new meaning to the word “durable,” and it gives Apple a new marketing angle, if they so choose. The story goes like this, a report appeared on CNN’s iReport feature, called the “Skydiving iPhone.” In it, Jarrod McKinney indicated he went skydiving with his iPhone 4, which fell out of the pocket of his skydiving suit. McKinney was jumping from 13,500 feet. After he landed, he noticed his iPhone was missing, and so he fired up his iPad and activated his iPhone finder app.

    This is what he discovered:

As unbelievable as it sounds, my phone had fallen 13,500 ft, and was still sending out a signal. According to my iPad, it was less than 1/4 mile away, and laying on top of a factory roof… I didn’t think there was anyway that the app could be that accurate, but low and behold, it was right where my iPad said it was…

CNN’s follow-up report even has an image, which leads this post. Naturally, McKinney wanted to see if his recovered phone was still working. It was, or, as McKinney says, “13,500ft, 120mhp, to a steel roof, and still alive!!”

The fallen device even synced up with his vehicle and allowed him to make a call, indicating that McKinney clearly purchased the most durable iPhone the world has ever seen. Considering the stern nature of the device, perhaps this story shouldn’t come as a surprise. Furthermore, the fact he isn’t asking for anything other than help getting the word to Apple and Incipio, the makers of his iPhone case, helps validate his story even more.

If he were simply asking Apple for a new iPhone, skepticism would be much easier to come by.

In other news, Apple has all the ammunition it needs for a “our smartphone is more durable than yours,” campaign, complete with McKinney recounting his story, just like the “Mac switch” commercials from a few years ago. You know, the ones that made Ellen Feiss famous:

“There I was, skydiving through the heavens and then, BAM, my iPhone fell out. But guess what? It. Still. Works!!!! Come at me, Android!!!!” or something similar is what I’m hoping for.

  • Verizon iPhone 4 Users Catching Up To AT&T

Verizon iPhone 4 Users Catching Up To AT&T

Although AT&T has had the iPhone 4 for almost a year longer than Verizon, the amount of iPhone 4 users on Verizon’s network is quickly catching up to AT&T’s market share. In fact, since launching on February of 2011, iPhone 4 users on the Verizon network now account for one-third of the iPhone 4 subscribers in the United States. For comparison’s sake, the AT&T model was launched in June of 2010, giving AT&T an eight month head start.

That gap is now steadily decreasing, according to a report by Localytics. Their findings reveal that, after starting out with something of a crawl, iPhone 4 uptake on the Verizon network has seen a noticeable increase during the summer months. Are more people abandoning AT&T for their competitor, or is this simply a case of Verizon users catching up to the AT&T plateau? In other words, do most AT&T users who want(ed) an iPhone 4 already have theirs, while the Verizon users are still in the process of acquiring theirs, or is there something else to consider?

From Localytics perspective, Verizon’s unlimited network gets some credit, but now that Verizon’s network is going down the misguided limited route, will that change the desireability of their iPhone 4?

Why the recent uptick in Verizon adoption? One reason may be Verizon’s unlimited data plan, which they are scheduled to do away with on July 7th. AT&T officially discontinued its unlimited data plan in mid-2010, although existing customers were allowed to keep their plan as long as they remained AT&T customers. We’ll continue tracking the shift in iPhone 4 market share to see if Verizon loses momentum post-unlimited-data.

There are graphs included in the Localytics study, which do a great job of demonstrating the shift in market share:

    Verizon iPhone 4 Growth

As you can see, the summer months have been very good to Verizon and their version of the iPhone 4. Too bad something has these mobile providers convinced that a tiered, limited mobile web is wise and just strategy. Must be the money.

Those of you desiring the iPhone 5, do you think you’ll get yours through the AT&T or Verizon? Let us know what you think.

  • Virginity, A Small Price To Pay For An iPhone 4

Apple now has a new slogan for the iPhone.

“So awesome, you’ll do anybody for one!”

Of course, Apple already had a slogan similar to this for their iPad 2 – “So awesome, you’ll cut out your internal organs for one.” Earlier this month the news surfaced that a high-school freshman in China named Zheng had sold one of his kidneys on the black market for the money to purchase Apple’s new tablet.

He was contacted online by a man offering him 20,000 yuan, or just over $3,300. When his mother found out, she wasn’t pleased to say the least. Authorities were unable to find the people responsible.

Now, another Chinese citizen has decided to sell a piece of their body for the latest and greatest device. This time it’s a girl, and she has offered her virginity to the first person who will buy her an iPhone 4.

It’s being reported that a “jiulinghou,” or person born during the 90’s, posted messages to microblogging site Weibo that said it was her “dream to own an iPhone 4” but her father wouldn’t let her get one. She then said that she was willing to sell her virginity to anyone that would buy her one. Weibo is basically the Chinese version of Twitter.

She also posted photos of herself to the site with general descriptions of her physical features. The whole thing has caused quite the controversy in China.

This definitely wouldn’t be the first time that a lady’s first time is up for grabs on the interwebs. In 2008 a 22-year-old woman tried to auction off her virginity online in order to pay for college tuition. Since she did this all through the Moonlite Bunny Ranch in the prostitution-legal state of Nevada, everything was totally legal. Apparently she received a top offer of $3.4, but the deal was never consummated.

This story leaves a lot of questions unanswered. What about the data plan? She won’t enjoy her prize very much without one of those. Will the “lucky” guy have to get her a 2-year contract? What would she do for a locked iPhone 4?

And possibly, most of all, why in the hell wouldn’t she wait and do this when the iPhone 5 comes out?

  • Verizon iPhone 4 Gets Called Out By Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports blasted the iPhone 4 when it first came out for AT&T, citing reception problems. You may recall Apple’s "antennagate" scandal, where it gave away free bumpers to make up for the issue. Now, Consumer Reports is making a similar case for Verizon’s incarnation of the iPhone 4.

The nonprofit organization says, "Bottom Line: The Verizon iPhone 4 closely resembles the original AT&T iPhone 4 in many positive respects, including offering great multimedia functionality, a sharp screen, and the best MP3 player we’ve seen on a phone. Unfortunately, it also shares with its sibling the possibility of compromised performance in low-signal conditions when used without a bumper or case."

"We looked at five other smartphones in the verizon network, and none of them have this problem," said Consumer Reports’ Mike Gikas. "While the Verizon iPhone is highly rated, we’re not adding it to the list of our recommended smartphones."

While the approval of Consumer Reports clearly hasn’t been a huge obstacle for Apple’s sales in the past, one can’t help but wonder how much better they would have been otherwise. There are a lot of people that look to the organization for guidance on purchases.

Consumer Reports has given recommendations for numerous Android devices in the smartphone category.

Consumer Reports does have an iPhone app that it launched in the fall. The app, which costs $9.99 provides users with access to ratings, recommendations, brand reliability information, and buying advice for appliances, electronics, children’s products, care care, and home products.

  • Verizon iPhone 4 Sales Sets Record

Verizon said today it has stopped pre-order online orders for the iPhone 4 to its existing customers after the most successful first day of sales in the history of the company.

“This was an exciting day," said Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer for Verizon Wireless.

Dan-Mead "In just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history. And, when you consider these initial orders were placed between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., it is an incredible success story. It is gratifying to know that our customers responded so enthusiastically to this exclusive offer – designed to reward them for their loyalty.”

Verizon did not offer any specific sales figures of the iPhone 4, but analyst Mike Abraksky with RBC Capital Markets, estimated that pre-order sales were likely less than 100,000.

The general launch of the iPhone 4 on Verizon will happened on February 10. The company will open its retail outlets at 7 a.m. It will also be available at all Apple store locations, Best Buy. Select Walmart stores, and online at Verizon and Apple.

  • Apple To Address iPhone 4 Problems Friday

Apple is holding a press conference tomorrow at 10 a.m. Pacific Time to address the issues surrounding the iPhone 4 and it antenna problem.

Many users of the iPhone 4 have reported weak reception when it’s held a certain way, leading to it being called the "iPhone 4 death grip."

iPhone-4 Earlier this week Consumer Reports said it could not recommend the iPhone 4, but did mention attaching duct tape to the antenna gap to remedy the reception issues.

"Apple needs to come up with a permanent-and free-fix for the antenna problem before we can recommend the iPhone 4," Consumer Reports said.

The controversy surrounding the iPhone has even attracted the attention of Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) who said in a letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs that the solutions offered to fix the problem have been "insufficient."

"The burden for consumers caused by this glitch, combined with the confusion over its cause and how it will be fixed, has the potential to undermine the many benefits of this innovative device," Schumer wrote.

"To address this concern, I ask that Apple provide iPhone 4 customers with a clearly written explanation of the cause of the reception problem and make a public commitment to remedy it free-of-charge. The solutions offered to date by Apple for dealing with the so-called "death grip" malfunction-such as holding the device differently, or buying a cover for it-seem to be insufficient."

  • The Secret iPhone Charging Issue

    The Secret iPhone Charging Issue

Thinking about getting yourself an iPhone 4, or perhaps you have the iPhone 3G S and aren’t eligible for your upgrade yet, here’s a tip for y0u about an important issue that Apple doesn’t seem to want to share (or atleast make it visibly public). Simply put, your iPhone can be charged 400 Times, a charge being each time you plug in the power cord… so if you charge your iPhone through the night, use it during the day, then charge it in the car on the drive home, you’ve just used 2 of your precious charges. Do this every day and the battery in your device (which is not swappable) will provide optimal power for about 200 days.

When the iPhone battery charges are used up, users will soon notice of considerable lack of battery sustainability with a “full charge” lasting only several hours and getting progressively worse. As an example, my 9 month old iPhone 3GS currently lasts about 3 hours after a full night’s charge. I spent some time with Apple support – luckily my one year factory warranty is still in place. Apparently this is a very well known issue and Apple has the solution for you – BUY THE $69 PROTECTION PLAN when you purchase your device… or, if you don’t have it go add it to your account now. Apple informs me that those who possess the protection plan with their account can receive a “free” replacement battery, although I believe that by replacement they actually will replace your iPhone with a new one and discard your old device – after-all, the battery is not swappable so simply replacing the battery is likely not an option.

I’m guessing that with the new, iPhone 4 this issue will likely continue and even get worse (not confirmed) the reason – multi-tasking. With iPhone iOS4 users can run several tasks simultaneously, thus adding to the drain on power and result in the need for more frequent charging. And so I urge you to grab yourself the extra $69 protection, otherwise the cost will be $100 when you eventually have to address this matter… and you will! Hey Apple, thanks for telling us.

  • iPhone 4 Most Successful Product Launch in Apple History

Apple announced that it has sold over 1.7 million iPhone 4s, as of Saturday, June 26th. It only launched on June 24th.

"This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history," said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. "Even so, we apologize to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply."

iPhone 4 from Apple On Friday, analysts had estimated sales of about 1.5 million for the first day, with 77% of them coming from upgrades, according to one Piper Jaffray analyst.

The iPhone 4 has not launched without plenty of complaints, as discussed here, but the biggest draw seems to be the FaceTime feature, which enables users to connect with one another via video messaging.

Silicon Alley Insider reports that there are already sex chat services based on FaceTime coming out. Given porn’s track record for driving technology, FaceTime may prove to be quite popular.

The iPhone 4 is selling for $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32 GB model.

  • iPhone 4 Sells Like Crazy, but Not Without Complaints

The Huffington Post has an article putting together the biggest iPhone 4 complaints so far. Among these complaints are: camera malfunctions, supply, screen discoloration, scratchable cases, poor reception, switched volume keys, and search limitations.

iPhone 4 from AppleIt is the reception problems that seem to be getting the most attention. This may be due to Apple’s response to the issue. Engadget provides this official statement from the company:

Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.

There have also been complaints about a bug preventing the iPhone 4 from using visual voicemail. "Whenever we went into Phone and clicked on the Voicemail button, instead of going to the Apple Visual Voicemail, it instead placed a call to Voicemail. So basically, it wasn’t working right at all," writes Alex at RustyBrick, adding, ""The trick is, on most new iPhones, you have to receive a voicemail (or two) before the iPhone will launch the prompt that asks you for your ATT voicemail PIN number."

Regardless of complaints and minor inconveniences, the iPhone has had no problem selling so far. Some calculations put sales at 1.5 million for the first day. A Piper Jaffray analyst says 77% of the sales were upgrades.

  • Farmville Launches On The App Store

Zynga said today it is launching its popular social game Farmville for iPhone and iPod touch.

The company said this week marks the one year anniversary of the game and Farmville has attracted 75 million users worldwide.

The move by Zynga builds on its strategy to bring social games to a broader audience across a number of platforms. The Farmville App offers players a new social gaming experience via the touchscreen. By swiping a finger or double tapping to zoom in and out, players can view their farms, harvest crops or drive tractors.

iPhone users will receive alerts about the status of their crops and farm through push notifications. In addition, current Farmville players can tend their farms on the iPhone or Facebook at any time or place.

"Mobile devices are an extension of people’s daily social lives everywhere in the world and the Apple iPhone is the most innovative breakthrough in this area," said Mark Pincus, founder and chief executive officer of Zynga.

"We are excited to bring FarmVille to the Apple iPhone and introduce our social games to a new audience of mobile users around the world."

Zynga says it will soon introduce additional in-game features for the iPhone 4 and iOS 4 including multi-tasking functionality and improved graphics to highlight the retina display.
