  • Kenyans Reading Celebrity Tweets Is More Depressing Than Anything

People on YouTube are calling this clip racist. It’s not. But I can see how one might think that if they just kind of watched the first few seconds and didn’t really think about it.

Depressing is really the right word here. Watching people in a poor, developing country read the meaningless, inane bullsh*t spewed out by first-world celebrities is sad. I don’t know any of these Kenyans, but I think I’m safe in assuming that the woman reading Paris Hilton’s tweet about swimming, jet skiing, and working on her tan in St. Tropez doesn’t know much about swimming, jet skiing, and tanning in St. Tropez.

Remember that campaign that saw Haitians reading #FirstWorldProblems? Yeah, it kind of feels like that.

It’s kind of funny sometimes, I guess. But it mostly serves as a stark comparison between the first and third world. I don’t know if Jimmy Kimmel meant for it to come off like that, but it does.

If you want something with more funny and less sad but in the same spirit, check out Nick Offerman reading inane celeb tweets and celebs reading mean tweets about themselves.

  • People In Haiti Read #FirstWorldProblems Tweets

Ad Agency DDB New York has teamed up with nonprofit WATERisLIFE to take advantage of all those #FirstWorldProblems tweets and spread an actual message: Your “first world problem” aren’t problems.

The effort has led to a bunch of videos of Haitian villagers reading aloud #FirstWorldProblems tweets, which the agency is then tweeting back at the authors of the tweets.

This video pretty much sums up the effort:

Here are some of the direct response videos being tweeted at Twitter users:

Plenty more where those came from here.

Business Insider shares some interesting comments from the ad exec behind the campaign, who says, “We totally understand the irony of it. People are doing it as a joke. It leads to a desensitization around the issue.”

  • BlizzCon 2012 Has Been Canceled

You might want to sit down for this news, especially if you’re a fan of Blizzard. BlizzCon 2012 has been canceled.

Citing a jam-packed schedule on their blog, Blizzard has opted out of holding their annual convention of all things Blizzard this year. They will use the time to focus on all the products they have coming out this year like Diablo III, Stacraft II: Heart of the Swarm and the WoW expansion Mists of Pandaria.

To perhaps fill the gaping wound in your heart, Blizzard will instead host the 2012 Battle.net World Championship. The tournament will host StarCraft II and World of Warcraft Arena championships somewhere in Asia. My bet is on South Korea.

If the void in your heart is just too big to be filled by some tournament, Blizzard confirmed that BlizzCon will be back in 2013. Better save that Kerrigan costume until next year then.

As always, the Twitterverse has exploded with the news:

It is time to face the bitter reality inflicted by lack of Blizzcon. We are now all people who, by necessity, must use the word “tweetup”. 25 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

No Blizzcon in 2012. It’s like Blizzard has too many cash printing machines and just ran out of paper for one of them. 1 hour ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Man, no BlizzCon is like Christmas being cancelled. 2 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Big news: No Blizzcon for 2012! The Mayan calendar was right! They say they will pick back up in 2013 http://t.co/gkhEazpg 6 minutes ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

Honestly… I could care less about some gaming championship. I wish they’d just tell the truth: “No BlizzCon because we have nothing new.” 2 minutes ago via Twitter for iPad · powered by @socialditto

Since there’s not going to be a blizzcon this year, I need ideas for vacation. 3 minutes ago via Twitterrific · powered by @socialditto

  • First World Problems Rap: A Funny Take on One of the Internet’s Most Beloved Topics

I’m ready to make a declarative statement: One of my favorite things on the interwebs are First World Problems – few trends blend humor with social commentary so perfectly. Of course, you don’t need the internet to rip someone when they complain about their over-privileged existence, but social media has really taken the phrase and made it indelible.

If you are unfamiliar with the whole First World Problem thing, it is basically any statement that makes you seem out of touch with the real problems of the underprivileged. Urban dictionary says that they are “problems from living in a wealthy, industrialized nation that third worlders would probably roll their eyes at.”

For instance, “Dammit, my iPhone has the weakest battery life ever” would be a first world problem. It would be fun to think of these all day, but I’m sure most of you are familiar with First World Problems, so I’ll move on.

First World Problems have had an enduring internet presence for years. Maybe not as important on the interwebs as bacon, but close. First World Problems has a popular tumblr blog, a featured Reddit thread, and a Lamebook-like collection of social media First World Problems site called White Wine. The latter, of course, is a little less politically correct term for the trend.

However, the place where First World Problems is really a star is on Twitter. The hashtag #firstworldproblems will see about 20-40 new tweets roll in every few minutes.

And the best part about the trend is that it is perfect self-deprecating humor. People are aware that their lives are easy compared to the less fortunate. Sure, the joke is a little insensitive, but it’s always damn funny. Here are some of the current complaints from the advantaged masses –

Today, this video is making the rounds. It was uploaded by YouTube user funnyz, who is a 17-year-old kid named Zach who calls himself a parody maker.

It’s pretty funny. Check it out –
