  • Devil May Cry “Vergil’s Downfall” DLC Coming March 5

Capcom this week released the first real DLC for its Devil May Cry (DmC) reboot. Titled “Bloody Palace,” the extra content includes the popular Bloody Palace Mode in which players can battle through over 100 levels against progressively harder enemies. The content is free, aside from some optional weapon packs that also went on sale this week for $1 or 80 MIcrosoft Points each. The launch preview for the add-on, which includes plenty of gameplay footage, can be seen below.

Today’s real news, though, is that Capcom has finally put a date to the first story-based DLC for DmC. The “Vergil’s Downfall” DLC will be released on March 5 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The add-on will cost $9, but is free for players who pre-ordered DmC at GameStop.

“Vergil’s Downfall” will feature a new campaign starring Datne’s brother, Vergil. The content will include new locations, enemies, move sets, and weapons.

  • DmC Dante Gets His Classic Look Back With New DLC

One of the biggest complaints about Devil May Cry (DmC) prior to its release this month was that the main character, Dante, was sporting a new, younger-looking style than he had in previous games. Instead of the shaggy white hair he was known for, the new Dante had a short-cropped emo look and punk clothing to match. For that reason alone, if Capcom hadn’t delivered with solid gameplay and great art direction, DmC may have been a black stain on the series’ reputation.

However, Capcom has proven that it does listen to its fans. Earlier this month the publisher announced that free DLC will soon be released that puts the “Bloody Palace” mode into DmC, where it should have been at launch. Of course, Capcom has also proven that it excels at selling character skin DLC. The combination of these two can easily be seen in the announcement of new character costume DLC for DmC.

The new DLC includes a costume for Dante that transforms him into a classic-looking Dante from the Devil May Cry 3 era. The content will be released on January 29 and will cost $4/€4/£3.19.

Of course, even the ability to revert a beloved character back into a well-known form isn’t worth $4 alone. So, the costume pack will include two additional skins. One resembles the character Spike from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series…

…and the other is this monstrosity:

  • Devil May Cry to Get Bloody Palace Mode

Devil May Cry to Get Bloody Palace Mode

Just days before the release of Devil May Cry (DmC) on January 15, Capcom has announced an new mode that will make a return appearance from previous games in the Devil May Cry franchise. The “Bloody Palace” mode will be available as a free downloadable add-on. No release date for the mode has been set, but Capcom stated that it will be available “shortly after the launch of the game.

Bloody Palace mode is a survival mode in which players will battle through “more than 100 levels” of demons and bosses. The mode will be available to players after playing through the game’s campaign at least once. Capcom promises that players will want the weapons they earn through the campaign, as Bloody Palace will be a “very challenging mode.”

So, why wasn’t Bloody Palace included in the retail version of the game? Capcom probably heard fans’ cries for this mode and began working on it after most of DmC was complete. The fact that it’s free is almost a sign that the publisher knows the mode should have been in the game from the beginning. It’s the type of downloadable content (DLC) gamers wouldn’t mind seeing more of, and it’s just good fan service.

  • Devil May Cry CG Trailer Released Online

With less than two weeks to go before the U.S. release of Devil May Cry (DmC), Capcom has released a CG trailer that highlights the game’s departure from previous ones in the series. The spot has been playing in movie theaters in the U.S. throughout the holiday season, which would explain its mass-market-appeal vibe.

The video doesn’t show off any of the story from the game as some game CG trailers do, but it certainly shows off the game’s distinct feel. The new, younger Dante with his short-cropped hair and interesting wardrobe choices is on full display. In particular, the ad highlights the character’s new “attitude,” which appears to have been crafted to suck in younger players who aren’t familiar with the series’ roots. The video also doesn’t show off any gameplay from the title, though there is plenty of that to be found online. A demo for the title has also been available for quite some time on consoles.

  • Devil May Cry PC Gameplay Trailers Released

Yesterday Capcom announced that the PC version of Devil May Cry (DmC) will be released on January 25, just 10 days after the console versions. The publisher promises that the PC version will be compatible with keyboard & mouse, the Xbox 360 controller, and third-party controllers. In addition, the game will be capable of running at 60 frames per second on sufficiently powerful PCs.

Now, Capcom has released what it is calling PC trailers for DmC. In reality, the trailers are just two gameplay trailers that show Dante slashing and blasting his way through dozens of hellish minions. The game’s graphics do look nice in the trailers, and the assumption is that they depict DmC running on a PC. This doesn’t differ much from other gameplay trailers, though. Nearly all games are advertised with footage from the game running on a PC, to show off the best the graphics can possibly look.

Still, these videos are another glimpse at the new Devil May Cry for gamers who haven’t had the chance to play the demo yet. Also, the more modern, punk aesthetic Capcom is going for is easily seen in the art design of these early stages.

  • Devil May Cry Announced For PC, Coming in January

Though all video games are developed using PCs, major titles are now being geared toward the console market where publishers can charge more for games, where games are harder to pirate, and where hardware configurations are constant. In recent years, this has meant delays in the release (or sometimes no release) of the PC versions of games.

Good news, then, for PC gamers who are fans of Capcom‘s Devil May Cry games. The publisher today announced that the PC version of the new Devil May Cry (DmC) will be coming in January. In fact, the PC version is set to launch on January 25, less than two weeks after the game launches on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. No word yet on a Mac version.

The PC version of the game will be available in retail stores in Europe, and through Steam and Origin everywhere. The game will be compatible with keyboard & mouse, Xbox 360 controllers, and third party controllers. Capcom also pointed out (as PC gamers are surely aware), that the game is capable of running at 60 frames per second on high-end PCs.

The minimum system requirements for the game suggest that even an average PC gaming setup will be able to run the game well:

    Minimum System Requirements:
    OS: Windows Vista®/XP, Windows 7, Windows 8
Processor: AMD Athlon™ X2 2.8 GHz or better, Intel® Core™2 Duo 2.4 Ghz or better
    Memory: 2 GB RAM
Hard Disk Space: 8 GB free hard drive space
Video Card: ATI Radeon™ HD 3850 or better, NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800GTS or better
    DirectX®: 9.0c or greater
    Sound: Standard audio device

The recommended specs show that DmC on PC might look quite a bit better than its console versions:

    Recommended System Requirements:
    OS: Windows Vista®/XP, Windows 7, Windows 8
Processor: AMD Phenom™ II X4 3 GHz or better, Intel® Core™2 Quad 2.7 Ghz or better
    Memory: 4 GB RAM
Hard Disk Space: 9 GB free hard drive space
Video Card: AMD Radeon™ HD 6950 or better
    DirectX®: 9.0c or greater
    Sound: Standard audio device

  • Devil May Cry Shows Off Its Voice Actors in New Trailers

Many fans of the Devil May Cry series are worried about the new game. From the previous footage that has been shown, the characters have been made younger and more “stylish,” while the the environments have been made more urban. Whether the updates are to woo a new generation of fans or to simply spice up a formula that had become a bit bland, the new Devil May Cry will succeed or fail based on its gameplay.

Gameplay is hard to sell in a trailer, though, so Capcom has begun a new series of developer diary trailers to put some behind-the-scenes footage to good use. The first two diaries show off the voice actors portraying the characters Lilith, Mundus, Kat, and Vergil in the game.

In the first trailer, the actress who portrays Lilith uses her interview to muse on the Shakespearean nature of the characters in the game and their relationship to “vengeance, power, good, and evil.” That’s a pretty good preview of the type of information all of the interviews provide, so don’t go in expecting new revelations or spoilers.

Developer diaries that show voice actors in black motion capture suits have been something something of a cliche for a while now. In the case of Devil May Cry, seeing the voice actors might even take away from the characters in the game, who are supposed to be super badasses.

  • Devil May Cry Demo Arrives November 20

Devil May Cry Demo Arrives November 20

Whatever your opinions on Dante’s new short-cropped hair, it’s clear from the screenshots and trailers that the new Devil May Cry (DmC) certainly has imaginative art direction. The weird urban, cyber-punkish settings and the dizzying set pieces that have been shown foretell that the game will be memorable, at the very least.

However, the Devil May Cry games have always been about more than the art, though that has been an integral part of their charm. The other major factor in the series has been the gameplay. Leveling up into new combos and powers until Dante or another protagonist is an unstoppable combo-chaining, gun and blade-wielding tornado of destruction is where the real fun comes from.

Devil May Cry fans worried that the new title might not play as elegantly as past games will soon get their chance to vet the game themselves. Capcom announced today that the demo for DmC is headed to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 20 in North America. Europe will get the demo on either November 20 or 21. From the announcement:

The demo will contain a few of the game’s difficulty modes, including the remixed “Son of Sparda” mode, which becomes unlocked after one completion. You’ll also have access to a variety of the game’s weapon upgrades and maybe a couple secrets along the way 😉

Capcom also stated that the demo will feature two “action-packed” missions and a “big ol’ boss battle.” Hopefully that will be enough for Devil May Cry’s fans to determine whether it’s any good.

  • Vergil Gets His Own DLC Campaign In DmC

DmC, no stranger to controversy, angered fans once again back in August when Vergil was revealed. Instead of the anime-inspired pretty boy that fans have to come to expect and idolize in fan art, Ninja Theory took the character into more of a realistic direction. He seemed more like a straight laced white collar criminal compared to the irrational JRPG villain archetype that embodied the old Vergil. Now Ninja Theory has revealed that they’re crafting an entire campaign centered around him.

Much like Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition, DmC will feature two campaigns. The main campaign will follow Dante through whatever kooky adventures Ninja Theory can cook up, but a second campaign featuring Vergil has just been revealed.

Compared to the nice guy we saw in the previous trailer, this Vergil definitely looks more vicious. It’s a nice change of pace for a character that many players complained was too far removed from the original incarnation. The gameplay itself still looks just as solid as Dante’s has so far proven to be.

As is the case with many of Capcom’s games as of late, Vergil’s campaign with be paid DLC. The campaign will cost $9, but it’s free to those who pre-order the game from GameStop or EB Games in North America. A pre-order will also net you the Samurai Weapons pack.

DmC will launch on January 15, 2013 on Xbox 360 and PS3. A PC version will be released shortly after.

  • Gamescom 2012: Vergil Is Revealed In Latest DmC Trailer

It’s hard to please everybody all the time. Nobody knows this better than Ninja Theory. Their reboot of the Devil May Cry franchise has been met with sneers and sometimes even death threats since the game was introduced last year. Fans are upset that one of their favorite franchises was being changed so radically after it had been stinking in a cesspool for a few years after DMC4 failed to capture the magic of DMC3.

Well, the latest trailer today out of Gamescom 2012 isn’t going to change any minds. If there was one character fans loved more than Dante, it was Vergil. The amount of terrible fan fiction obsessive teenage girls wrote about the two would be enough to fill the Library of Congress. There’s something about male brothers that brings out the worst from Internet degenerates and Devil May Cry was a suitable conduit.

Before we get into what will undoubtedly make the fans rage, let’s take a look at the good news. Vergil is still Dante’s brother and he still wields a katana. That’s about as far as the similarities go though. Whereas Vergil was the antagonist in DMC3, he seems to be one of the good guys this time around. He’s in charge of the demon resistance movement on Earth and he recruits Dante to fight said demons.

Much like Dante, Vergil has received a drastic makeover from his past incarnation. He now looks a lot like Captain American from the recent live-action Marvel film. It’s a decent look, but fans are upset that he’s not longer sporting the spiky silver hair that makes him look like a 1980s anime reject. It works within the confines of Ninja Theory’s more realistic universe, but fans are not going to be happy. Check out for yourself and decide if the new Vergil is to your liking:

As for me, the trailer just further cements my excitement for the title. I’m a huge fan of Ninja Theory’s past works and they always know how to tell an amazing story. I can’t wait to see what the genius writers at Ninja Theory do with the characters. The gameplay looks solid enough as well so there shouldn’t be any reason to complain beyond the characters getting different looks. Unfortunately, you can never please all the people all the time.
