  • It’s hard to please everybody all the time. Nobody knows this better than Ninja Theory. Their reboot of the Devil May Cry franchise has been met with sneers and sometimes even death threats since the game was introduced last year. Fans are upset that one of their favorite franchises was being changed so radically after it had been stinking in a cesspool for a few years after DMC4 failed to capture the magic of DMC3.

Well, the latest trailer today out of Gamescom 2012 isn’t going to change any minds. If there was one character fans loved more than Dante, it was Vergil. The amount of terrible fan fiction obsessive teenage girls wrote about the two would be enough to fill the Library of Congress. There’s something about male brothers that brings out the worst from Internet degenerates and Devil May Cry was a suitable conduit.

Before we get into what will undoubtedly make the fans rage, let’s take a look at the good news. Vergil is still Dante’s brother and he still wields a katana. That’s about as far as the similarities go though. Whereas Vergil was the antagonist in DMC3, he seems to be one of the good guys this time around. He’s in charge of the demon resistance movement on Earth and he recruits Dante to fight said demons.

Much like Dante, Vergil has received a drastic makeover from his past incarnation. He now looks a lot like Captain American from the recent live-action Marvel film. It’s a decent look, but fans are upset that he’s not longer sporting the spiky silver hair that makes him look like a 1980s anime reject. It works within the confines of Ninja Theory’s more realistic universe, but fans are not going to be happy. Check out for yourself and decide if the new Vergil is to your liking:

As for me, the trailer just further cements my excitement for the title. I’m a huge fan of Ninja Theory’s past works and they always know how to tell an amazing story. I can’t wait to see what the genius writers at Ninja Theory do with the characters. The gameplay looks solid enough as well so there shouldn’t be any reason to complain beyond the characters getting different looks. Unfortunately, you can never please all the people all the time.
