  • ICANN CEO Rod Beckstrom to Step Down At End of Term

ICANN CEO Rod Beckstrom to Step Down At End of Term

Rod Beckstrom, President and CEO of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that he will leave at the end of his term.

“I am incredibly proud of ICANN’s achievements throughout my tenure,” said Beckstrom. “In two short years we have advanced this organization to a new level of professionalism and productivity, and turned it into a genuinely multinational organization that will serve the world community long after my time here.”

“I can summarize my time here in four words: strong execution, great team building,” he said. “We have built a world-class executive team, and elevated ICANN’s stature through strategic relationships with governments, businesses, top technology firms and international organizations.”

Actually, his time there was summarized in about 35 bullet points in this list of accomplishments.

I have decided to wrap up my service at ICANN July 2012. Press release soon. 13 hours ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

The announcement doesn’t really delve into why Beckstrom is stepping down, but there has been a fair amount of controversy over the new ICANN gTLD program. The Association of National Advertisers, which is made up of 400 companies representing over 10,000 brands, as well as the Interactive Advertising Bureau, which is made up of over 500 media and tech companies, which it claims are responsible for 86% of online advertising in the U.S., have spoken out against the program.

The IAB says it could be “disastrous” to brand owners, and that it would “offer cyber squatters an opportunity to harm a brand’s integrity and/or profit greatly from their bad faith domain registrations.”

ICANN has defended against such notions, insisting that it “should not infringe the existing legal rights of others.”

    More on this discussion here.

Beckstrom’s term will be completed on July 1. He’s held the position since July 1, 2009. In the meantime, he says, “I remain committed to leading this critical organization with the utmost
dedication, and to living up to our common vision: One world, one Internet.”

ICANN will start accepting applications for new gTLDs on January 12, 2012, with the application period will run until April. They’re expected to roll out late next year.

Beast is sure to be the most popular dog since the Obamas’ dog Bo. In fact, if you go by the top ranking Facebook fan page for Bo, Beast already has him beat by a long shot.

Some are calling Beast’s Facebook page a PR move to make Zuckerberg seem more likable. Can’t a guy just have a dog?

Update: Since the time of this was originally written, Beast has learned to climb stairs (Breaking News!):

BeastJust learned how to climb stairs. I'm such a champion.

Beast also now has nearly 8,500 fans.

  • AMD CEO Steps Down, Company Searches for Replacement

AMD announced today that President, CEO, and director Dirk Meyer has stepped down from these positions. The company’s Board has appointed SVP and CFO Thomas Seifert as interim CEO while they search for Meyer’s replacement.

"Dirk became CEO during difficult times," said Bruce Claflin, Chairman of the Board. "He successfully stabilized AMD while simultaneously concluding strategic initiatives including the launch of GLOBALFOUNDRIES, the successful settlement of our litigation with Intel and delivering Fusion APUs to the market."

"However, the Board believes we have the opportunity to create increased shareholder value over time," he added. "This will require the company to have significant growth, establish market leadership and generate superior financial returns. We believe a change in leadership at this time will accelerate the company’s ability to accomplish these objectives."

Dirk Meyer steps downThe company has formed a CEO Search Committee to find a permanent replacement for Meyer. Seifert will continue to act as CFO, and interestingly has asked not to be considered for the permanent CEO position. Claflin has assumed the role of Executive Chairman of the Board and assumes additional responsibilities during the transition period.

"AMD enters 2011 with considerable product and financial momentum. Our roadmap for the year, including our ‘Llano’ APU and 32nm ‘Bulldozer’ based processors remain on track," said Seifert. "I believe we have significant opportunities to cement our leadership positions in several key market segments based on the strength of our upcoming products."

AMD also announced that its fourth quarter revenue increased 2% to nearly $1.65 billion. This is from the company’s preliminary results. The final results will come on January 20.

  • How Can Business Owners and CEOs Keep Up in the Digital Age?

How does a business owner know what online marketing strategies to choose from? There are seemingly new tactics, new ideas, and new tools coming out every day, and most companies simply don’t have the resources to jump right into every one of them. Decision makers must figure out which ones will work best and be the most cost-effective for their companies. The problem is, that it’s just not easy to figure these things out.

How do you decide which technologies to get involved with? Comment here.

“The pace of change is frightening,” New York Times tech columnist David Pogue told WebProNews in an interview at PubCon. “In the last three or four years…it’s becoming overwhelming for me. I mean, it’s my job. I eat and breathe keeping on top of tech, and people will say ‘what do you think of…’ something I’ve never heard of and everyone else has, and it’s like oh my god, now I’m behind. So I don’t have any idea how a CEO is supposed to keep up.”

“Obviously there’s people like me and websites, whose job it is to filter stuff for you, and bring to you what’s important,” he added. “That would probably be one way to do it, but I think it explains why in general business is always behind the curve.”

  • Digg Has Found Its CEO

    Digg Has Found Its CEO

Update 2: Rose has now put up the offiical announcement. He writes:

I’d like to update you on the latest change at Digg. After several months of searching, we are excited to announce that Matt Williams will become the CEO of Digg. As you know, I have been the interim CEO, while we looked for the right person, and I will still remain actively involved in the product, but am handing over the day-to-day running of the business to Matt...

Quote from Matt: "The launch of version 4 was a big moment for Digg and I believe in the potential of this new platform. There is so much innovation yet to come — being the best in the world at curating news means solving the information overload we all experience every day. The Digg team has already made great strides in this direction and there is much more ahead. I’m excited to join such a talented team and such a vibrant Digg community."

Update: Kevin Rose has put up a new post on the Digg blog announcing some upcoming changes to the site, but no mention of the hiring of Williams.

Original Article: Digg has reportedly found its new CEO. According to TechCrunch, the company has hired former Amazon General Manager of Consumer Payments Matt Williams to fill the role.

Michael Arrington says Digg Founder Kevin Rose, who has assumed the CEO role since the departure of Jay Adelson earlier this year, will become Digg’s chief architect, which he used to be.

While Arrington claims to have confirmed the news, Digg has not yet made an announcement about hiring Williams – not even a tweet from Rose yet.

Assuming the news is indeed true, Williams gets to take over the company at an interesting time. The new redesign of Digg just launched (announced just after Adelson’s departure), and it is already inspiring some user backlash (the new home page is still being overrun by content from Digg competitor Reddit).

    Reddit Dominates Digg

Williams has been with Amazon for 11 years. Before that he founded LiveBid, which was sold to Amazon in 1999.

  • HP CEO Out After Sexual Harassment Investigation

HP has announced that Chairman, CEO and President Mark Hurd has resigned his positions. This comes following an investigation into sexual harassment claims made against Hurd and the company made by a former contractor.

The company says the investigation determined there was no violation of HP’s sexual harassment policy, but did find violations of HP’s "Standards of Business Conduct."

Hurd had the following to say: "As the investigation progressed, I realized there were instances in which I did not live up to the standards and principles of trust, respect and integrity that I have espoused at HP and which have guided me throughout my career. After a number of discussions with members of the board, I will move aside and the board will search for new leadership. This is a painful decision for me to make after five years at HP, but I believe it would be difficult for me to continue as an effective leader at HP and I believe this is the only decision the board and I could make at this time. I want to stress that this in no way reflects on the operating performance or financial integrity of HP."

Mark Hurd Resigns as HP CEO "The corporation is exceptionally well positioned strategically," he added. "HP has an extremely talented executive team supported by a dedicated and customer focused work force. I expect that the company will continue to be successful in the future."

Robert Ryan, lead independent director of the Board, added, "The board deliberated extensively on this matter. It recognizes the considerable value that Mark has contributed to HP over the past five years in establishing us as a leader in the industry. He has worked tirelessly to improve the value of HP, and we greatly appreciate his efforts. He is leaving this company in the hands of a very talented team of executives. This departure was not related in any way to the company’s operational performance or financial condition, both of which remain strong. The board recognizes that this change in leadership is unexpected news for everyone associated with HP, but we have strong leaders driving our businesses, and strong teams of employees driving performance."

HP’s Board of Directors has appointed CFO Cathie Lesjak as CEO on an interim basis. She has 24 years with the company under her belt. She will also retain her CFO responsibilities during the interim period. "I accept the position of interim CEO with the clear goal to move the company forward in executing HP’s strategy for profitable growth," she said. "We have strong market momentum and our ability to execute is irrefutable as demonstrated by our Q3 preliminary results."

A Search Committee of the Board of Directors has been created to oversee the process for finding a new CEO and Board Chair.
