  • Steve Jobs vs. Kim Jong-il: Ranking The Famous Deaths of 2011

While most of us come and leave this world with little fanfare, there are those among us whose passing, especially if untimely, captures hearts and headlines around the world. The death of a celebrity, or prominent public figure, just does something to people. A death can stir up fond memories, extreme hatred, or obsessive curiosity.

Rank the famous deaths of 2011.

Every year we’re shocked by some of the deaths we read about, and 2011 was no different. This year we saw the deaths of Steve Jobs, Osama bin Laden, Kim Jong-il, Andy Rooney, Jack Kevorkian, Betty Ford, Heavy D, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Amy Winehouse, Joe Frazier, among others.

If someone was to ask you to name the top 10 famous deaths of 2011… could you do it? It’s tougher than you might imagine.

With this in mind, FamousDead.com has released a poll where you can rank the famous deaths of 2011. To contribute, you simply have to drag and drop the images in order 1-10.

Once you’ve made your selections just hit submit and you’ll be taking to a page that shows your top 10 famous deaths of 2011. You can also share your top 10 via Facebook. Please note that you must be logged into Facebook in order to save your votes, this is so we can assure that everyone only casts one top 10 list.

FamousDead will close submissions during the first week of 2012, and will also reveal the top 10 deaths of 2011.

Note: This poll was created by FamousDead.com, a website owned by iEntry, which also publishes WebProNews.

  • Android & iPhone Offer Time Square App For NYE

Watching television can be really tough sometimes. Watching television can be especially tough on New Year’s Eve. You gotta open your eyes, look in a direction and continue looking in that direction as you wait for the Times Square ball to drop at the stroke of midnight. Ushering in the infant year can be doubly exhausting if you’re sitting on a couch and eating popcorn (or whatever you like to have to munch in the new year). If you happen to fall into this unfortunate category of oppression, a new app for iPhone and Android is here to the rescue.

Now you don’t need a TV to livestream the ball-dropping ceremony from Times Square thanks to Times Square Official Ball App. From the description on Android Market:

New Year’s Eve in Times Square LIVE to your phone!

Join millions of revelers around the world to celebrate New Year’s Eve 2012 LIVE. The Official Times Square Ball App is your exclusive access to be part of the activities in Times Square as you watch the LIVE co-hosted official show featuring A-List musical performances, celebrity appearances, first Times Square Wedding, hourly countdowns and the midnight Ball Drop!

Don’t wait until December 31st to enjoy the Times Square Ball App. Download today!

You can check in with this app via Foursquare, Facebook, or Twitter; obtain directions to Times Square (because NYC can feel like a maze to the uninitiated), and read history trivia about celebrating New Year’s Eve in Times Square. The developers also offer a video to demonstrate all the bells and whistles included with this festive app:

I guess this app could be used for peeps who have the untimely luck to be stuck in transit between parties/bars/homes when the ball drops. Trust me, I’ve been in that crummy position before and it’s not a good party. So this could be a useful app for those situations but… I prefer to think that TV is really that difficult to watch.

  • Top TV Ads of 2011 According to Nielsen

Nielsen has released a few top ten lists for the top TV ads of the year.

The top most-liked new ad was from Volkswagen, and its Passat ad featuring a little boy dressed as Darth Vader.

Here’s a look at the whole list:

The top most-remembered branded integration with a drama/sitcom was Purell and The Big Bang Theory from October 27, where Sheldon uses hand sanitizer after he puts a live snake into a desk drawer. Here’s that top ten list:

  • According To Bing, 46% Of Men Plan To Dress Like George Clooney For New Year’s

Bing recently put out its list of top searches for 2011. Now, they’re sharing results from a survey about what people thought about 2011, as well as the year ahead.

This is a survey of 1,000 U.S. adults. See if you can spot the silly results.

    – 65 percent of 18-24 year olds were positive about 2011 and are hoping for much of the same in the New Year.

    – 76 percent of 45-54 year olds said that it was a hard year and they’re hoping 2012 will be better.

    – Losing weight is the top New Year’s resolution for 35% of men

    – Same for 47% of women

    – 32% of respondents don’t plan to make a New Year’s resolution at all

    – 44% plan to spend New Year’s Eve at the beach, in the mountains, or somewhere away from the crowds.

    – 34% indicated that tablets are the number one piece of technology they would like to buy in 2012

    – 24% said a 3-D TV.

    – 35% said they’d like to spend New Year’s Eve with Sandra Bullock when asked about which celebrity they’d likd to do so with.

    – 14% said Katy Perry

    – 12% said Prince Harry

    – 46% of men will be guiding their New Year’s Eve fashion choices baed on “George Clooney’s classic style.”

    – 33% of women will be basing theirs on Pippa Middleton.

    – 26% plan to mirror their New Year’s resolution diets after Jennifer Lopez.

I’m just going to stop there.

Something tells me that this survey is not incredibly indicative of society as a whole, as much as I’d like to believe that nearly half of all men plan to dress like George Clooney on New Year’s Eve.

  • The Best Fails of 2011

Earlier, Josh detailed the most-watched YouTube videos of 2011, and while that list is indeed eye-opening, especially in regards to the music tastes of YouTube viewers, it was missing something crucial: A video featuring the best fails of 2011.

While the video hasn’t acquired enough views to make the year-end list, if there was a “heat” meter for the video’s popularity, it would be hovering around the “smoking hot” section. Consider this, the video we’re about to watch was posted on December 18th, which was two days ago as of this article. In the two short days since it was uploaded, the Best Falls of 2011 video already has over 1 million views and well over 10,000 likes.

If YouTube had a “highest gaining stocks” ticker, this video would certainly be listed. With that in mind, let’s all enjoy 12-plus minutes of the best of people busting their asses, because nothing says humor like laughing at the misfortune of others:

Now that’s a whole heaping of fail for you. Personally, I’m awfully fond of the skateboarders who wipe each other out, all except for the guy in the yellow shirt who raises his arms in victory after realizing the disaster he just avoided.

Look for it around the 34 second mark, but don’t stop there. Be sure and stay for the duration, and yes, the woman falling into the mall fountain while she’s texting definitely makes an appearance.

The lesson this video offers, at least to me, is clear: Stay the hell away from lamp posts, especially if you have no business attempting Parkour moves.

  • Look Into The Future With IBM’s 5-in-5 Tech Predictions

Look Into The Future With IBM’s 5-in-5 Tech Predictions

Every year since 2006, IBM has released a “Five-In-Five” list that details their predictions for the future of technology. Basically, IBM picks five innovations that will impact the way we live in the next five years.

This year, they look at things like mind-reading, spam, and sustainable energy. Let’s take a look into the future, according to IBM.

    1. People will power their houses with energy that they create themselves.  True renewable energy will become the norm, allowing people to power their homes and work places with simple movement – like the turning of the spokes on a bicycle or the running of water through pipes.
    2. No more passwords.  Biometric tools like retina scanners and voice recognition will totally replace traditional passwords, and you’ll be able to use these login devices at places like the ATM machine.
    3. Your devices will read your mind.  In the next 5 years, scientists will have discovered a way to link your mind to you devices so that you can just think about calling someone and it will happen.  Further down the road, people might just be able to simply think about what they want to say and have it typed out for them on their computers.
    4. Mobile Technology will help close the digital divide.  They predict that within 5 years, 80% of the global population will own a mobile device.  communities all over the world will be able to use this technology to access mobile commerce programs and virtual health care.
    5. Spam will become personal.  “Junk mail will become priority mail. In five years, unsolicited advertisements may feel so personalized and relevant it may seem spam is dead.”

Not all of the past IBM predictions have come to pass. For instance, we don’t quite have mind reading mobile phones yet (predicted back in 2006) and we haven’t been able to eradicate the “forgetting” part of aging (predicted in 2008). But some of the predictions have definitely come true.

Two of the first year’s predictions, for instance, have pretty much come true:

We will be able to access healthcare remotely from just about anywhere in the world. Today, through telemedicine, patients can connect with physicians or specialists from just about anywhere via inexpensive computers and broadband networks. Doctors can view x-rays and other diagnostic imagery from thousands of miles away.

Technologies the size of a few atoms will address areas of environmental importance. Nanotechnology is now used in countless fields and industries, including agriculture, biotechnology and sensor networks, enabling us to understand and interact with the natural environment like never before.

Plus, they predicted that users would soon talk to the web, and the web would talk back. Sounds a little bit like Siri and other voice assistants, no?

Which of IBM’s 2011 predictions do you see coming true in the next 5 years? Which ones seem just a little too ambitious? Let us know in the comments.

  • Green Scrapbook: The Year In Environment-Friendly Search Trends

Going green was a pretty sexy topic in 2011 and lots of people got down with the movement. Some people chose to raise chickens in their back yard. Some may have started taking recycling more seriously. Maybe there were even some folks that got ambitious and erected an entire football field’s worth of wind turbines so they could generate enough energy to play a single hour of Arkham City. At any rate, being green was keen in 2011 and now, in the twilight of the year, Google’s Green Team has offered people a way to look back in fondness of some of their favorite environmentally-friendly trends over the past year.

Green Scrapbook works off of Zeitgeist, Google’s year-end feature that highlights the most popular search trends of the past twelve months, and the numerous popular searches tied to environmentalism. Within Green Scrapbook, users can find out information about the green topics that occupied people’s interests over the year and compile a virtual scrapbook of some of the subjects that catch their attention. Google provided a video that highlights some of the environmentally attached topics people searched for this year.

Basically, users can fill in a template containing seven general topics like “I never would’ve guessed that…” and “If I could save one animal, I’d save…” and then select subjects within those topics that will reveal some of the environmentally-themed searches from the past year.

By dragging one of the environmentally-related search topics to the center circle, you can reveal the answer to your environmental inquiry of choice. For example, you wanna know more about raising chickens in your backyard.

Once you compile your environmental interests into your scrapbook, you can learn more about those subjects by clicking on the link inside the info blurb to perform a Google search or, if you really must, subject this scrapbook to your friends who are really dying to know about your green leanings.

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to have a greener year, this could be a great resource for getting started. If that Mayan calendar prediction of the world going to complete apocalyptic hell in 2012 turns out to be true, having a Green Scrapbook would also easily double as a handy survival guide. At any rate, more information can be found on Google’s announcement that was Google+Blog%29″>posted on their blog.

  • Blog Services: The Good & The Bad Of 2011

One of the hallmarks of the Internet experience in 2011 is the towering amount of blogs that are out there, waiting to be read by any online flaneur with some time to kill. The nice thing about blogs is that it’s easier than ever start one thanks to a number of blogging services that will host your content – most of the time for free – and provide you with all of the necessary tools to help you build your blog. The bad thing about blogs is that it’s easier than ever so anybody who has so much as walked by a keyboard has started a blog at some point. The term “critical mass” does not apply to blogs.

Since you’re about to get started on your blog any second now, Pingdom wants to help you lift-off. They’ve rated the top five blogging services so you’ll know which blogging service is the most reliable (least downtime) and which one to stay away from (most downtime) all so you can have and provide the best blogging experience ever.

The blogging services included in Pingdom’s surveyed were Blogger, WordPress.com, Typepad, Tumblr, and Posterous. Over the period of January to November of this year, they monitored each service to assess the total amount of downtime each service had. They used their own the monitoring service to test the services from multiple locations in North America and Europe. From each blogging service Pingdom monitored four different blogs to measure the amount of downtime experienced by each.

    And the winner is…

Google’s blogging service, Blogger! Pingdom found that Blogger was down only a minute and a half each month. That’s some incredible reliability. I’m a human being yet I consistently have more downtime than Blogger. The service actually came out on top last year in the same study, so Google’s got some pretty good longitudinal reliability to boast of now, too.

Honorable mentions go to WordPress and Typepad, both of which had a larger sum of downtime during the study but were still under a total of two hours. With WordPress down only nine minutes per month and Typepad down ten minutes, that’s still really good and I bet you would hardly notice the outage.

So do you see who ranked the most unreliable blogging service? That’s right: Tumblr. Tumblr had a median downtime of almost four hours per month with the single longest outage observed during the study at three hours. Three hours in Internet time is, like, it might as well just be a whole month. Have you seen how impatient people get when they try to load a page and it takes more than three seconds?

As you could probably glean from the above table, Pingdom ranked the blogging services in the following order, from best to worst:

    1. Blogger
    2. WordPress
    3. Typepad
    4. Posterous
    5. Tumblr

Now carry on, my wayward bloggers, and enjoy the exquisite services offered to you by Blogger. However, if you happen to have already signed up for a Tumblr account, it’s not too late to jump ship and move on to greener pastures. Especially if you’re counting on Tumblr to help you get re-elected.

  • Latest Google Zeitgeist Proves 2011 Belonged To Rebecca Black

Google year-end Zeitgeist for 2011 has gone live, and besides boasting a new look, complete with new, more interactive presentation of its findings; and while the new shine improves the look and feel, their findings are what we are really after.

After a quick glance, there’s one thing crystal clear about the year that was — it belonged, almost solely, to Rebecca Black. Sure, 2011 saw the death of Steve Jobs and the world reacted swiftly. Nevertheless, to give you an idea of how much more popular Black was over Jobs, while Black was the top-rising search query in the world, Steve Jobs came in ninth, and it’s clear a great deal of these queries came after his passing.

When comparing the popularity ranges for Black and Jobs, it’s important to keep the time period of their Google popularity in mind. When Rebecca Black was burning the Internet down, Jobs was still alive and because of that, analysis of that time period shows Black as the clear leader in regards to popularity:

    Black versus Jobs

The reason for her popularity is simple. Black had the most disliked video ever on YouTube, and while there have been some changes to the numbers thanks to the takedown and reposting of the infamous video, Black’s mark on popular culture is undeniable. The infamous video that started it all, or, well, the reposting of it:

That made her such an Internet star, YouTube wisely kept her around.

Fast forward to the death of Steve Jobs, and queries for his name increase in popularity at an exponential rate, but it’s not enough of an overall performance to supplant Black’s overall popularity. That said, he was more popular than her after he passed:

    Steve Jobs

While Jobs may not have surpassed Rebecca Black on an overall basis, his products had a strong showing as well. The iPhone 5 was the sixth and the iPad 2 was tenth. Much like search for Steve Jobs, the search for the iPhone 5 were “seasonal,” meaning they weren’t consistent throughout the year. However, right before the iPhone 4S came out, the queries for the iPhone 5 increased rapidly:

    iPhone 5 queries

Of course, the Google Zeitgeist for 2011 was not all Apple and Rebecca Black. In fact, the second fastest rising search, according to Google’a calculations, belongs to Google’s social networking hub, Google+. While the initial reception of Google+ was off the charts — yay, a real Facebook killer emerges! — the hype has come back to earth, but man, what a fast and furious ride it was:

    Google Plus

If you move the slider to the beginning of the year, the searches for Google+ are non-existent. Clearly, the key to making the Google Zeitgeist is, when you hit, hit really, really hard and don’t necessarily worry about the long tail, at least in regards to Zeitgeist popularity.

Other surprises included a third place appearance by Ryan Dunn, who’s popularity was also driven by his unfortunate death. Following Dunn is Casey Anthony, proving that polarizing criminal trials have a strong Internet presence as well. Google has also produced a video celebrating this year’s Zeitgeist, a three-minute celebration of the year that was, at least through the eyes of Google searches:

Finally, here are some additional findings you may find interesting. The fastest falling search term in 2011 was Myspace. Hey, at least they’re still relevant, right? The fastest-rising query in Google News belonged to Hurricane Irene.

The most popular athlete in the eyes of Google’s Zeitgeist was Manny Pacquiao, with Tiger Woods and LeBron James close behind. In the world of music, Adele was so popular, she made the overall Zeitgeist top 10, coming in at number seven. As far as songs go, Lady Gaga won the day with “Born This Way.”

This year’s version of the Google Zeitgeist is incredibly comprehensive, so I would suggest taking some time and checking out for yourself because this article is only the tip of the iceberg. There are a large number of top 10 lists, ranging from fastest risers in Google Maps to the top queries in pop culture.

With that in mind, any thoughts on the latest year-end list from Google? Any surprises or disappointments? Let us know what you think.

  • Facebook: #1 Tech Company To Work For in 2012

It probably won’t require any dexterous tricks of imagination to believe this statement: Facebook has been named the best tech company to work for in 2012, according to Glassdoor’s annual Employees’ Choice Awards. As if that glimpse into the Facebook offices at the end of The Social Network wasn’t enough to cause everybody to instantly salivate with office envy, it turns out that employees at Facebook have a pretty high level of job satisfaction, too.

According to glassdoor.com’s list of the 50 Best Places to Work for 2012, the feedback from employees at Facebook gave the company a rating of 4.3 out of 5, with 4.01-5.0 meaning “Very Satisfied.” This ranking was high enough to place Facebook as the third ranked company overall but it is slightly lower than the 4.6 ranking the social media colossus received in 2011 when it was the #1 overall ranked company.

Edging out Facebook for the top two spots were Bain & Company and McKinsey & Company – two consulting firms that couldn’t sound more Wall Street even if you renamed them Gordon Gekko 1 and Gordon Gekko 2.

Glassdoor compiled a highlight video the top companies in order to fill your heart with greed and work-lust. Enjoy and covet much:

Seriously, did you see that dude skateboarding down the hallway at work during that Facebook segment? Skateboarding! At work! It’s like a Silicon Valley Level 5 Shangri-La. Unreal. Way to rub it in, Facebook. I can only imagine that the coolness factor will soon be a bi-coastal phenomenon now that Facebook is opening up an office in New York City. Get those applications in quick, kiddos.

Not to be completely forgotten, Google and Apple also placed in the top ten overall companies to work for in 2012 at #5 and #10, respectively. After what I’ve read and seen of the Googleplex, I’m a little surprised that they’re not a little higher. That place makes Disney World look like a snooze-fest.

Glassdoor included more than 65,000 companies for the 2012 awards. The full report card from Glassdoor can be viewed on their website, but if you’re like me and curious about what the worst companies are to work for in 2012, you’ll be disappointed that no such information is available in this report.

  • Time Person Of The Year 2011: Reactions

Time Person Of The Year 2011: Reactions

Time Magazine revealed this morning its choice to be Person Of The Year, the honor they give to the person, whether literal or abstract, to be the most influence over the course of events in the past year. This year’s honor was awarded to…

    The Protester!

It’s not the first time that Time has given the title to someone other than a specific, proper person (that 2006 award to “You” as the Person of the Year still sticks in my craw), but of course this decision – as with just about any list you’re likely to find in this end-of-year times – at once ruffled some feathers and pleased many. Reactions on Twitter ranged from indignant to celebratory, some tongue-in-cheek (maybe?) self-congratulations, humorous, and disbelief that a certain recently deceased inventor was passed over for the award. Interesting, too, is that most people want to spell protester as “protestor” (myself included).

Here’s a sample of what you’ll find on Twitter today regarding the Person of the Year:

Honestly, the fact that so many people seem to think that the most important thing Steve Jobs did this year – dying! – positioned him to be honored as Person of the Year is an insult to the legacy of a man that those very same people have beatified since his death. Saint Jobs did a lot of innovative things and changed the way we communicate, sure, but the Person of the Year isn’t Time Magazine’s fancy way of eulogizing someone important. But anyways. What do you think? Agree or disagree with the choice? Comment below.

  • Google Panda, Google+, and Other Search Events of 2011

It’s hard to believe that 2011 is drawing to a close, but it is. That said, if you could sum up the search industry over the course of the year in one word, what would it be? According to search veteran Bruce Clay, that word is “turmoil.”

What do you remember most about the search industry in 2011? Let us know.

    Looking back at 2011

The turmoil that Clay was referring to was largely because of Google’s Panda update. As WebProNews previously reported, Google rolled out its Panda update in an effort to target low quality sites across the Web. The impact of it, however, was extremely significant. Many people, such as Dani Horowitz of DaniWeb, saw their site drop dramatically and had no idea why.

“We’ve determined, or at least convinced ourselves, that linking, the quality of your inbound link networking, is also part of the quality of your site certainly at a trust level,” said Clay. “Trust scores and components associated with the quality of how your site connects to everybody is part of the factor to determine whether or not you are a site worthy of ranking.”

He went on to say that Panda was “disruptive” but that he thought, in the end, that it had helped Google’s search results.

“Overall, I think that the results have improved,” he said.

Google also released a “Freshness” update not long ago that was intended to index fresher content more quickly. From Clay’s perspective, this update really only impacts news content. Fortunately, most people seem to be hopeful about it.

Another move, however, that Google made that did and will continue to have an impact on the search industry was Google’s move to encrypt search. If you remember, Google said it would begin encrypting logged-in searches that users do by default when they are logged into Google.com. For SEOs, this means that they will not receive referral data from the websites consumers click on from Google search results.

Although Google claimed the move was done to protect user privacy, most SEOs – Clay included – aren’t buying into this theory, mostly because the move did not impact advertisers.

“I really think that the intent there was more to allow Google to see what we are searching for themselves because they are now in the stream,” said Clay. “It’s sort of not a universal privacy issue [because] people don’t know, many times, that it’s an ad.”

While Google announcements have primarily dominated the 2011 recap thus far, the yearly events do go beyond the search giant. For starters, social media is bleeding over much more into search. Clay told us that social media, and especially Twitter, has changed how people find sites.

In other words, social media is becoming a replacement for the browser. Searchers look to their social networks for recommendations and reviews before they visit the brand sites. Clay said that this shift in behavior is still resulting in conversions even though the traffic is down.

Speaking of social and search, Google’s release of its own social network Google+ was another significant move during the year. Clay told us that it doesn’t have a big impact on search at this point, but he suspects it will.

In terms of the other search engines, Clay said that Bing has held its own during the year. Microsoft and Yahoo collectively appear to be growing in search share, but Clay said he thinks the reason is because Ask and AOL have lost some.

    Looking ahead to 2012

Going forward into 2012, Clay has several predictions. For starters, he believes that Google Panda will continue. In fact, he said that the image should be changed to a polar bear instead of a panda because it would get meaner and more aggressive.

“Google is in the business of making money,” he said. “Everybody needs to recognize that Google is a money generator.”

For this reason, he believes that Google will also integrate Google+ into search in 2012. A few years ago, Google went from a “one size fits all” approach with search to personalized search results. In order to make these results geared more toward individuals instead of groups of people, Clay explained that Google+ would give the search giant this ability.

“The best way to get your history is to just watch you and, I think, Google+ is that tool,” he said.

“It is entirely within reason for Google, every time you login to Google+, for them to know where you are,” he added.

As far as the other search engines go, Clay told us that Bing has good technology and that it would grow, especially in light of its partnerships with both Facebook and Mozilla.

While some have already written Yahoo out of the search market, Clay said that Yahoo would remain a leader in the space. According to him, it’s out of the spidering business but not the search or algorithm business.

“It’s kind of hard to criticize a company that only did a billion dollars in business,” he pointed out.

In addition, Clay said that local search would continue to grow in 2012. Due to this growth, he thinks the search engines will begin to monetize it through a concept called local paid inclusion. He said it would be similar to Yahoo’s Search Submit Pro and that the companies would pay to get included in the top of the search results.

Clay thinks the premium listing will have a call tracking system associated with it that would work like PPC ads work. For instance, if the number is clicked, the company pays the search engine. Based on past trends, he believes that Bing and Yahoo will offer this service before Google. He said that Google typically watches services from other companies and then develops their own version of it.

Clay said we could expect this element as soon as January and believes so strongly in the concept that Bruce Clay Inc. is already preparing to offer services in this area.

According to Clay’s predictions for 2012, the year looks to be just as interesting as 2011. Do you agree?

What do you think the search industry will hold for 2012? Will it be as “disruptive” as 2011? Please comment.

  • Skyrim: Most Played Video Game In 2011 By Individual Gamers

Many are heralding 2011 as one of the greatest years in video games history, though the ornery old-school gamer in me believes 1996 still holds that title. However, it’s hard to argue against the likes of: Battlefield 3, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Uncharted 3, NBA 2K12, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Modern Warfare 3, and Batman: Arkham City. Even as you’re reading this list, I’m sure many of you are shouting “You left out X (game), which is better than Y“. Or you’ll let me know what I left out in the comments. That’s how bountiful 2011 has been to all of us.

So what were the most played games of 2011?

Since I already spoiled the surprise in the title, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was the most played title in 2011 according to a report generated by Raptr.com.

Most Played Games of 2011 – Full Report (PDF)

    Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The service allows gamers to track their achievements, and gameplay activity for both PC and consoles. However, due to data capturing restrictions, only data from the PC and Xbox 360 can be used for the report. So the findings are skewed, leaving the hours clocked by Uncharted 3 and Skyward Sword in question.

Here’s a list of the rest of the awards handed out in the report, along with some interesting statistical findings:

    – Most Played Shooter: Modern Warfare 3

    – Most Played RPG: Skyrim

    – Most Played Open World (Non-RPG): Batman: Arkham City

    – Most Played Sports Game: FIFA Soccer 12

    – Most Played Social Game: The Sims Social

    – Most Played New IP: L.A. Noire

    – Most Successful Paid-to-F2P Game: DC Universe Online

    – An average Skyrim player logged 85 hours before unlocking the “Reader” achievement (read 50 skill books).

    – Apparently Batman doesn’t care about saving hostages — less than 1% of players rescued all hostages from The Riddler.

    – The average Skyrim player clocked 2.92 hours in one sitting – the highest one month average in Raptr history.

    – Most pay-to-play games experience explosive growth after making the switch to free-to-play. This year, the biggest was DC Universe Online with a 1000% increase in user base, which translated to a 2500% increase in playtime per day.

Pretty interesting findings from Raptr, with the DC Universe Online stats being the most eye-opening to me. Considering most games seem to monetize better on a free-to-play system, by making money through cash shops, it’s a wonder why there’s still a subscription model in existence. I’m looking at you Star Wars: The Old Republic (which I’ll end up playing anyway).

    Happy Gaming in 2011 everyone!

  • The Last of Us: The PS3 Exclusive Being Announced at VGAs

Uh, so it looks like PS3 owners will be playing through a post-apocalyptic world in the upcoming exclusive – The Last of Us. Will the apocalypse be caused by ants or plants? Maybe all of this is to simply throw us a curveball, and the game will be a Ratchet & Clank sequel and this is just a practical joke being played by Kevin Butler.

    Let’s look a little deeper.

There are a few things we do know about the game. First, we know it is a PS3 exclusive due to an initial report of a billboard in Times Square, teasing a PS3 exclusive being announced at the Spike VGA 2011 Award Show. The game was later to be revealed The Last of Us. On the website, the date 12.10.11 is shown, strongly hinting at the show reveal.

The teaser trailer that has all us PS3 owners sweating in anticipation is this:

There’s a long list of take-aways from the teaser. First, we know this game is going to deal with the violent aspect of humanity. Considering most of the clips involve riots, and acts of violence. Also, we’re going to be dealing with an infection of some sort as there’s plenty of medical masks and quarantine zone signs in the video as well.

While all of these aspects of video are readily apparent, there are a few things to take note of while watching. First, the YouTube channel that hosts this video has been around since 2006. Meaning, this game has been in development for over six years or they paid a YouTube user for the account. My initial guess is the former, which would mean the idea for this has been around for quite some time. Also, the narrator has a gruff and sad sounding inflection in his voice. Perhaps telling us all of the events leading up to the game have taken place.

Along with the first trailer, we have two screenshots we can salivate over. Each looking crisp and beautiful, especially if you look at the textures for the forest wallpaper screenshot.

    The Last of Us screenshot

    The Last of Us screenshot

The first screenshot is the most revealing and interesting, showing a paper reporting on events which have left millions dead or “infected”. There are two news headlines, “Texas, New Mexico Quarantine Fails” and “England Latest To Declare Martial Law“. These could perhaps be hints at possible locations in the game; if true the game might take us around the globe for gameplay locations.

The second screenshot doesn’t provide as much, but looking beyond the obvious there are a couple of details to note. First, is how well rendered this screenshot is for a game that has zero presence, and one where the developer is a complete mystery. Also, it’s an odd choice for a background considering the teaser trailer has shown us urban locations.

The final piece of the puzzle, as of now, is a second teaser trailer which is even more abstract and head-scratching than the first.

It’s a clip of an ant that appears to be suffering from a rare, and real life zombie fungus. The clip shows the beginning stages, but it has been confirmed that the clip is from an actual BBC special.

All of this speculation leads us back to the initial question; what the hell is this game? Will it involve crazed zombies, who eat away at flesh? Will it be a shooter or more of an adventure game?

What I find most interesting is no developer has been attached to this, which is odd. Many times, vague teases will be announced but companies will still attach themselves to the teaser. However, the site doesn’t have any copyright information and there haven’t been any whispers as to who’s behind this.

In conclusion, I’d like to submit my own theory; I believe we’re looking at Hideo Kojima’s next project. The game developer who brought us the likes of the Metal Gear Solid series, and Zone of the Enders. He has expressed interest in moving away from the MGS series, and hasn’t been a director for any MGS game since Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. He really likes to keep his games a secret, and surprise his fans as much as possible. He is no stranger to the apocalyptic setting as well; he developed a series which sounds extremely close to this, titled – Snatcher. Also, this game is being revealed at the VGA’s which has grown in popularity, and Sony would really need some heavy ammunition to impress viewers. What better ammunition is there than Hideo Kojima?

All of the mind bending like tactics seem to have Kojima’s distinct style attached to them. If you’ve ever played a MGS game, you know your mind is going to be messed with on more than one occasion. What other developer do you know would use an ant related zombie fungus video to tease a game?

We’ll know the truth Saturday, sometime between 8 and 10 PM.

  • Top 10 Internet Memes of 2011

What do you remember most about 2011? So far, we’ve looked at the most tweeted events, Facebook’s top status trends, celebrities who joined Twitter, Twitter’s top topics and hashtags, Yahoo, AOL/Ask, and Bing‘s most searched for items. So, what does that leave? Internet memes, of course.

What was your favorite Internet meme of 2011? Let us know.

According to Don Caldwell of popular site Know Your Meme, the top memes of 2011 are: (Drum roll please)

    1. Rebecca Black’s “Friday”

    2. Planking

    3. Occupy Wall Street

    4. First World Problems

    5. Scumbag Steve

    6. X All the Y

    7. Nope! Chuck Testa

    8. Nyan Cat

    9. ’60’s Spider-Man

    10. My Little Pony

According to Caldwell, a lot of these memes became viral sensations because people could take them and put their own spin on them. He indicated that some of the others, such as Rebecca Black’s “Friday,” grew in popularity because “it’s so bad, it’s good.”

Caldwell went on to say that most Internet memes become what they are by chance since consumers are quick to detect “forced” memes. However, there are cases, such as with the Old Spice Guy, in which the online community accepts branded marketing campaigns.

Did your favorite meme make the cut? If not, tell us what it was and why you think it should have been included.

  • Rap/Hip-Hop Gets No Love From Amazon’s Best Music Of 2011

Amazon released its Best of 2011 selections for music today which, undoubtedly, will ignite a fury of Internet commenters to opine and whine about why certain albums are so high and why certain singles don’t even appear on the list. From Amazon’s press release:

Each year the Amazon Music team digs deep into a handful of musical genres–editors listen to as much new music as possible and vote on the very best albums and songs. The goal of creating a thoughtful “best of the year” list is to help customers discover amazing new music and to make it easy for customers to explore new artists or bands. The Best of the Year Music Store is now live on Amazon.com and offers customers a large variety of music to browse, along with unique lists such as “50 Outstanding 2011 Albums You Might Have Missed.”

“Our customers enjoy discovering new music and we hope there’s something for everyone’s taste in our Best of the Year for 2011,” said Craig Pape, Director of Amazon Music Content Acquisition. “Our editors love to listen to new music and highlight the best of the best such as Adele’s rich sophomore effort ‘21.’ ‘Rolling In The Deep’ has become an anthem for 2011 and is the top song in our Customer Picks.”

The anthem of 2011? Really? Having never heard of it, I consulted with an insider at the Internet (i.e., the search engine called Google) and have confirmed that ‘Rolling In The Deep’ is in fact that song that has been playing in every car, mall, commercial, bar, bathroom, coffee shop, radio, and occasional earworm all year. An anthem it is, then. At any rate, Amazon’s editors have compiled multiple Best Of lists to accomodate for multiple tastes, such as Best Pop, Best Country Music, and Outstanding 2011 Albums You Might Have Missed.

A noticeable genre missing from Amazon’s compilation of Best Of lists was a Best Rap/Hip-Hop category. In a year that saw album releases from top names like Drake, Jay-Z & Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne, Wale, Rihanna, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, The Beastie Boys, and Raekwon as well as more recent breakouts like Tyler, The Creator, Yelawolf, and Wiz Khalifa (to name a few), no link or mention is found on Amazon’s Best of 2011 music site. Granted, lots of genres were not given their own list on Amazon, and that’s a fair argument, but with so many of Rap/Hip-Hop performers presently active in the mainstream it’s peculiar that Amazon would give Classical music more attention than Rap/Hip-Hop.

What do you think of the lists Amazon compiled? Hate them? Agree with them? Comment below.

  • The Most Tweeted Events of 2011

Twitter continues its series of year-end reflections with a look at the tweets per second during various events throughout the year. Previously we looked at the Twitter story of a homeless man being reunited with his daughter, the top trending topics and hashtags of the year, and the celebrities that joined Twitter in 2011.

In a post on the official Twitter blog, the company says:

The biggest moments on Twitter this year were live events and breaking news, when millions of people came together to watch significant events as they unfolded in real time. These moments range from natural disasters and geopolitical happenings to championship games, and reflect the way people turn to Twitter for a fast, simple way to communicate.

Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement on MTV’s Video Music Awards in August broke the record for the highest TPS spike of all time: nearly 9,000 Tweets per second. Live sporting events accounted for six out of the top 16 TPS spikes, with the final game of the Women’s FIFA World Cup holding the TPS record for sports. Hard news, including word of Troy Davis’ execution (7,671 TPS) and Steve Jobs’ resignation (7,064 TPS), round out the list.

So here’s the tweets per second list:

    6,939 – JAN 1 – New Years
    4,064 – FEB 6 – Super Bowl
    5,530 – MAR 11 – Japanese earthquake and tsunami
    3,966 – APR 29 – UK Royal Wedding
5,106 – MAY 2 – Raid on Osama bin Laden
    6,303 – MAY 28 – UEFA Champions League
    5,531 – JUN 13- NBA Finals
    6,436 – JUN 27 – BET Awards
    4,995 – JUL 11 – Home Run Derby
7,166 – JUL 17 – Brazil eliminated from the Copa America
    7,196 – JUL 17 – End of FIFA Women’s World Cup
    5,449 – AUG 23 – East Coast earthquake
    7,064 – AUG 25 – Steve Jobs resigns
    8,868 – AUG 28 – MTV Video Music Awards
    7,671 – SEP 20 – Troy Davis executed
    6,049 – OCT 6 – Steve Jobs passes away

Facebook’s Top Status Trends of 2011

Now it’s Facebook’s turn to talk about the trends it has seen over the course of 2011, and considering how many people are on Facebook, and how often they’re on it, this might be the most telling list yet of what has really been on people’s minds this year. Facebook calls it “memology”.

“This year’s top cultural trends — or memes — shed light on the more light hearted things people were discussing and sharing on Facebook,” a Facebook spokesperson tells WebProNews. “For example, ‘planking,’ where you lie face down in usual locations, was one of the top memes on Facebook in 2011; ‘LMS’ or like my status and ‘TBH’ — to be honest were the new HMU. In the celebrity and music world, Megan Fox had the fastest growing Page and ‘We Found Love’ by Rihanna and Calvin Harris was the most listened to song.”

“Memology takes the pulse of this global community by comparing this year’s status updates to last year’s, unearthing the most popular topics and cultural trends – or memes – emerging on Facebook,” says Facebook’s Jonathan Chang. “Whether it’s hmu, lms or tbh, each year brings a new set of three letter acronyms that go viral.”

Here’s what the top global topics looked like in 2011:

    memology

“As well as identifying the top ten global topics on Facebook, we also dug through the data to identify the top trending cultural phenomena for the year,” says Chang.

This includes planking, the use of “lms” and “tbh”, and the rise of music producer Skrillex:

A couple of things that really stick out as really surprising from all of this data is that the movie Insidious made the top ten in the U.S. and that Avril Lavigne made the top 3 musicians globally. It’s not even about liking them. thought Insidious was OK, but it was more discussed on Facebook in the U.S. than the death of Steve Jobs? Really? I also find it interesting that our Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers were so high on the global list.

  • iPhone Tops Yahoo’s 2011 Most Searched List

First we looked at Bing’s 2011 round-up of top searches. Then it was Ask and AOL. Now it’s Yahoo’s turn.

It was the iPhone that apparently captured the hearts of most Yahoo searchers. Even more so than Kim Kardashian.

“For 10 years, Yahoo! has analyzed its aggregate Search data to gauge the top stories, compelling newsmakers, and viral fads,” a Yahoo spokesperson said in an email. “Yahoo!’s Year In Review drills down to uncover several themes that provide a snapshot of the year.”

“The top search term of 2011 didn’t go to a person or a news event, but a technological marvel,” she added. “The iPhone led the 2011 search queries, bypassing a reality TV divorcee, a notorious criminal defendant, and America’s most wanted terrorist.”
