Skye McCole Bartusiak’s cause of death has finally been revealed, several months after she was found unresponsive by her boyfriend in her parent’s Houston home.
According to People, Skye’s official cause of death was due to an accidental overdose.
“The exact cause of death is an accident due to the combined effects of hydrocodone and difluoroethane with carisoprodol,” a Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences source told the news site.
According to the New York Daily News, Skye had the “pain killer Vicodin in her system along with the refrigerant difluoroethane (chemical refrigerant found in products such as Dust-Off) and the muscle relaxer carisoprodol.”
Skye, who was best known for her role as Mel Gibson’s seven-year-old daughter in The Patriot, was found dead in July at the young age of 21. Helen Bartusiak, Skye’s mother, tried to revive her, but unfortunately she was unsuccessful.
Helen also explained that her daughter wasn’t a drinker and didn’t do drugs. She said she was in overall good health and didn’t know what could have caused this seemingly healthy girl to die so suddenly. She did reveal that Skye had been suffering from seizures in the days leading up to that day.

“We lost our girl,” Helen said at the time of her daughter’s death. “We think she had a seizure and choked and nobody was there,” she added. “They were working on her for 45 minutes and could not get a heartbeat. She was a kind and really beautiful girl.”
Full autopsy reports are still pending.
