“Reality Bites” Coming To Television

You are in the bell jar. Nobody can eat 50 eggs. Welcome to the Maxi Pad. There’s an I.Q. prerequisite, but there’s no secret handshake.

You might recognize those lines from the 1994 film “Reality Bites”, which was directed by Ben Stiller, and if you’re anything like me, you know plenty more. It was a movie that defined a generation labeled as slackers, a movie that addressed what it’s like for a young gay man to come out to his family and a young college graduate to search for direction (and a job). Now, Stiller–who also starred in the movie alongside Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Steve Zahn and Janeane Garofalo–is planning to bring the story to the small screen for NBC.

For fans of the film, the good news is that original writer Helen Childress is on board for the show with Stiller, and they’re planning to focus on Lelaina’s character (Ryder) as she struggles to suss out a career and a love life. It will also take place not in present day, but rather in the early ’90s, which should make for some good nostalgic fun.

The original actors will more than likely not be making any cameos, but casting decisions haven’t been made yet.
