Pumpkin Drug Bust: Woman Had 4 Pounds Of Coke Inside Gourds

Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport was the scene of a drug bust on Halloween after a woman carrying three suspiciously heavy pumpkins was found to be smuggling 4 1/2 pounds of cocaine inside them.

26-year old Mercedes Jerez Farias was arrested and charged with importing drugs and possession after a scan showed that the gourds had been hollowed out and stuffed with the powder. If Farias is found guilty, she faces a minimum of two years jail time.

The airport has seen more than it’s share of drug busts lately; just since the beginning of the year, 173 seizures have been made at Trudeau. The Canada Border Services Agency released a statement regarding the latest arrest, saying, “Border services officers work tirelessly to intercept narcotics regardless how they are hidden. This seizure helps eradicate narcotics from our community by stopping potential traffickers from using our international airports for their illicit cross-border activities.”

According to NBC News, the drugs are worth anywhere from $274,000 to $340,000.
