#OnlyOnTwitter: Twitter’s Collection Of Weekly Ephemera

electronic devices

Over the past six years in Twitter’s relatively short but internet-long lifespan, the microblogging site has bore witness to everything from big happenings in the world to the simple yet amusing celebrity ramblings, from a live-tweet of an actual open-heart surgery to the NFL’s Chad Ochocinco commenting throughout the State of the Union earlier this year.

In light of being the occasional canvas for the occasional cultural moment, Twitter announced today that the site will be collecting and sharing what they consider to be the week’s best tweets. From the official Twitter blog:

We’ve started collecting these moments here over the last few months, and now we’re sharing them with you. Each week you’ll see instances from sports, television, news, music — and they all have one thing in common: they appear #OnlyOnTwitter.

Twitter has actually been hoarding tweets for #OnlyOnTwitter for a while over on the developers section of their site. Some of those collections may eventually have some historical significance, such as the New York TimesNick Kristof’s live-tweeting a brothel raid in Cambodia or last summer’s first ever Twitter town hall in which President Obama answered tweets in a Q&A format. It doesn’t even have to be current for it to be historically significant, as demonstrated by last month’s live-tweeting the 50th anniversary of John Glenn’s historic flight into space.

Just a personal note here at the end, though: should Twitter’s Happy Meal offering of a weekly tweet collection leave your hunger unsatiated and your thirst unquenched, I implore you to feast your eyes on WebProNews’ very own quotidian buffet of the day’s funniest tweets.
