Known the world over for such hits as Smells Like Teen Spirit, All Apologies, Heart Shaped Box, and Come As You Are, the Seattle-based band became as equally known for recognizable album covers such as the one from Nevermind as for making head-cranking hits. Many popular albums were released during the band’s active years including: Bleach in 1989, Nevermind in 1991, In Utero in 1993, and MTV Unplugged in New York during 1994.

Nirvana members included: Krist Novoselic, Kurt Cobain, and Dave Grohl from 1990 onward while Aaron Burckhard had been part of the band during the original formation. The band may have continued making amazing hits; however, unfortunate news about the untimely death of one beloved member changed this.

On April 8, 1994, tragedy struck when an electrician found Kurt Cobain’s body at his Lake Washington home with a bullet through his head. The following excerpt is from the letter that was found resting next to Kurt Cobain when he was discovered.

I have a goddess of a wife who sweats ambition and empathy and a daughter who reminds me too much of what i used to be, full of love and joy, kissing every person she meets because everyone is good and will do her no harm. And that terrifies me to the point to where I can barely function. I can’t stand the thought of Frances becoming the miserable, self-destructive, death rocker that I’ve become.

I have it good, very good, and I’m grateful, but since the age of seven, I’ve become hateful towards all humans in general. Only because it seems so easy for people to get along that have empathy. Only because I love and feel sorry for people too much I guess.

Thank you all from the pit of my burning, nauseous stomach for your letters and concern during the past years. I’m too much of an erratic, moody baby! I don’t have the passion anymore, and so remember, it’s better to burn out than to fade away.

Peace, love, empathy.
Kurt Cobain

Though the world lost the talented Kobain before his time, Dave Krohl went on to provide great music through the Foo Fighters. For many fans the world over who still hold a torch for this band, the recognition is met with devoted enthusiasm.
