Nicki Minaj Not “Satan” Mariah Carey Talked About

It was obvious that Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey were not the best of friends during their time spent judging the popular singing show, “American Idol”. This was why many people thought Minaj was the person Carey was referring to when she made the comment about going to work everyday being like “going to work with Satan.” However, Carey’s husband, Nick Cannon, says that she was not necessarily talking about any one person on the judging panel.

“Honestly, I hated it,” Carey said during an appearance on Hot 97 on Tuesday. “Honestly, I thought it was going to be a three-person panel,” she said. “They gave me a nice dangling monetary moment and I was like, ‘OK … Randy Jackson will be there’ — you know he used to play bass for me — ‘This isn’t a big deal, this will be nothing.’”

However, soon after the start of the season, Carey realized the job that she had described to her was not the job she had. “But it wasn’t that,” she continued. “It was like hell going to work every day in hell with Satan,” she joked. “I’m just playing; it didn’t affect me that much. I was disappointed.”

Carey may have very well been talking about Minaj, however Cannon says that her comment was about the situation on “American Idol” in general.

“I don’t think her ‘Satan’ comment was about the people on the panel. It’s about when someone tells you something and paints a picture one way, and then that’s not the case,” Nick told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover during Friday night’s Access Hollywood Live. “If she’s used to being treated a certain way and then you have a network that says, ‘No, we’re gonna do this,’ then…”

“I don’t think she was speaking directly about Nicki. I think she was talking about the situation in general. In her mind, it’s bigger than that,” he said. “If my wife wanted to, she would’ve said that. She has no problem saying how she feels! She was talking about the situation in general,” he continued.

Carey and Minaj have since been replace on the show with Harry Connick Jr. and Jennifer Lopez. The only returning judge from last season is Keith Urban.
