Miriam Carey, Capitol Driver, Had Baby In The Car

Miriam Carey, the 34-year old woman who put the Capitol on lockdown on Thursday after trying to break through a barrier at the White House, had her 1-year old daughter in the car with her at the time.

Carey’s mother, Idella Carey, says her daughter suffered from post-partum depression since giving birth last August and had been hospitalized, but she never believed her daughter would do something so drastic, especially with her child in the car. Idella Carey says she thought Miriam was on her way to take her daughter to a doctor’s appointment in Connecticut–where she was from–and had no idea why she was anywhere near the White House.

“I would never in a million years believe that she would do something like this,” Carey’s employer, Dr. Steven Oken, said. “It’s the furthest thing from anything I would think she would do, especially with her child in the car. I am floored that it would be her.”

Authorities say Carey was surrounded by police vehicles at one point and rammed a Secret Service car in order to escape. Carey was shot dead after leading police on a car chase, two weeks after a gunman killed 12 people at the Navy Yard and sent the city into a panic. Her daughter was unharmed in the melee and has been taken into protective custody. An investigation is ongoing.
