Lupita Nyong’o Displays Own LED-Light Show at “Star Wars” Fashion Event in NYC

Lupita Nyong’o was lit up like a Christmas tree at the Star Wars Force 4 fashion event in New York City earlier this week.

Wearing a tea-length black dress, Lupita Nyong’o shared a surprise with fans as she walked the red carpet. Inside her dress was a series of LED lights that made her sparkle and shine.

Lupita Nyong’o plays the role of Maz Kanata–a 1000-year-old pirate–in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Since her character is known for “extraordinary optics” in the film, Lupita Nyong’o decided to share that likeness on the red carpet, too.

Alas, there was another–even better–reason the actress was lit up on the red carpet.

“This is a Zac Posen collaboration with Google for an initiative they have called Made With Code, where they encourage young girls to try out computer science as a possible career, and this is how science can intersect with fashion,” she explained.

Later that same evening, Lupita Nyong’o visited The Daily Show with Trevor Noah wearing the same dress.

“I think I might have been attracted to it because of my appearance in Star Wars,” she joked with Noah.

“I grew up watching Star Wars,” she added. “It came on TV on public holidays, so I thought of Star Wars was a part of being off school. So, it was just incredible to have this opportunity to be a part of it 30 years later.”

Fans of Lupita Nyong’o think she’s pretty incredible, too. First making a huge name for herself in the film 12 Years a Slave, and winning the Academy Award for female supporting actress for her role, Lupita Nyong’o is on the fast track to superstardom. And she’s already twinkling–as every star should.
