Live Cicada Cam Shows 17 Year Dormant Insects Invading Washington D.C.

The last time cicadas came above ground in the mid-atlantic region, gas was $1.15/gal, Ask Jeeves was released, Jerry Maguire & Independence day were the blockbuster movies of the summer. The insect oddity will be invading towns up and down the east coast as the summer wears on. With millions expected to come above ground to mate, die, then the send their off spring back below ground to eat.

The Science Channel is using this time to build awareness for the insect, and allow people to learn more about the interesting insect. They have a live cam of cicadas in a terrarium, allowing people to see how the insects breed, eat, and live towards the end of their life cycle. While the insects will be invading Washington D.C. with their unique mating sounds, they’re invading this D.C terrarium.

Along with the live cam, The Science Channel will also release a special, teaching people about the cicada oddity. The special will air Sunday, May 26th.
