Kim Kardashian Gobbles Down Her Placenta To Avoid Postnatal Depression

Second-time mom Kim Kardashian is taking drastic steps to avoid the baby blues after giving birth Saint West, and it’s not for the faint of heart.

Weeks before the anticipated birth of Saint West, Kim revealed how she planned on consuming her own placenta to evade postnatal depression. Her unorthodox measures certainly raised many eyebrows and probably induced some people’s gag reflexes, but the 35-year-old reality star explained her decision in further detail on her website.

“So, I’m really not this holistic person or someone who would have ever considered eating my placenta. I actually thought Kourtney would have soooo done this, but I don’t think she did,” Kim wrote. Apparently, her sister Kourtney actually did consume her placenta earlier this year, after giving birth to her youngest child, Reign Aston.

After successfully giving birth to Saint West, Kim announced today that she is indeed ingesting her placenta, but specified that it will be in the form of pills. And when I say ‘eat my placenta,’ I mean that I’m having it freeze-dried and made into a pill form—not actually fry it like a steak and eat it (which some people do, BTW),” said the post on her app.

The practice of consuming one’s placenta, which is called placentophagy, is not pioneered by Kim Kardashian – at least not in the celebrity circuit. Besides her sister Kourtney, actresses Alicia Silverstone and January Jones, as well as reality star Kim Zolciak have openly praised the effects of this practice on their postnatal health.

However, numerous members of the medical community are not too keen about placentophagy and insists that there is not scientific proof of its benefits. A study conducted earlier this year by the Archives of Women’s Health revealed that while non-human mammals have been discovered to practice placentophagy regularly after birth, its benefits, which include enhanced lactation, pain relief, and hormone replenishment are not necessarily applicable to humans.

Nevertheless, placenta consumption has another avid fan in Kim Kardashian, who happily posted a photo of her jar of placenta pills on Twitter. This might be her last chance at taking these “happy pills” as she previously stated that she won’t be getting pregnant again after Saint West.
