Keira Knightley Gives Herself a $50,000 Salary

Keira Knightley recently admitted to Glamour that she allows herself an approximate annual salary of just $50,000.

“I think living an [expensive] lifestyle means you can’t hang out with people who don’t live that lifestyle. It alienates you,” Knightley explained. “Some of my best, most hilarious times have been in the least luxurious places.”

That said, Knightley added that “if I want or need something that goes over that, I get it.”

Knightley is known for flaunting Hollywood’s stereotypes about how a successful actress should dress. Her fashion choices are often low-key and eclectic and she frequently makes headlines for wearing the same outfit two or three times.

In April Knightley drew negative attention when she wore a cropped-top Chanel dress that showed off her tiny waist to the Tribeca Film Festival to premiere her most recent movie Begin Again.

The dress was called “terrifying” and “absolutely bizarre” but Knightley laughed it off:

“When we were getting ready that evening, we were all going, ‘They’re soooo going to hate me in this, but they’re so wrong.’ Apparently the reason they were so mean was because they thought the dress was unsexy. I wasn’t intending to be sexy. This idea you have to be sexy on the red carpet – that dress made me very happy.”

Back in 2010 Joe Wright, who directed Knightley in Atonement and Pride and Prejudice said of the actress:

“One of the things I love most about Keira is that she’ll play the game to a certain point and play it no further. She doesn’t pander to the press in the way I’m sure they’d like. So sometimes they’re even meaner to her than others.”

Knightley isn’t afraid to speak her true thoughts on marriage, either.

The 29-year-old actress, who married Klaxons vocalist and keyboardist James Righton in May 2013, told Glamour’s Christa D’Souza that she’s never been a fan of marriage:

“Actually my parents kept saying, ‘Why bother?’ I think they only [got married] to get a mortgage. But when James proposed, I just thought, Well, never done that before. It seemed like a fun thing to do.”

When asked about her upcoming first wedding anniversary at the Tribeca Film Festival, Knightley appeared to have forgotten all about it: “Oh yeah, is it?!” she stammered. “Oh, thanks, yeah good, wow!”

And don’t expect Knightley to follow in Jessica Biel’s or Jennifer Garner’s footsteps by taking Righton’s last name for legal or personal purposes. She thought about it but just “couldn’t do it. I couldn’t go there. Yet.”
