Katie Couric’s Temporary Return to Morning News May End Today’s Reign

Katie Couric will return to “Good Morning America” for one week while host Robin Roberts is on vacation. Couric also works as a Special Correspondent for ABC News, contributing to ABC World News, Nightline, 20/20, Good Morning America, This Week and primetime news specials. The single mom has anchored the CBS Evening News, reported for 60 Minutes, hosted Today and reported for Dateline NBC.

Her ratings on CBS Evening News have not been stellar but The New York Times is predicting that her temporary stint on G.M.A. might put an end to Today’s winning streak:

“G.M.A.” finished last week only 137,000 viewers behind “Today,” the closest it has been in nearly five years. The ABC show also won two of the five mornings last week, also for the first time since October 2007. “G.M.A.” has not gotten any nearer to “Today” since that week.”

This is so important because of Today’s long leading history: “ABC executives have been nearly obsessed with breaking the longest-winning streak in television history, the 16-year-plus run that “Today” has enjoyed. “Good Morning America” has not beaten the NBC morning show since the first Clinton administration — December 1995.”

Twitters users are interested to see how this will shake out:

Like all good journalists, Katie Couric shared some tips on how to interview in the following YouTube video:

She advises interviewers to be a gracious host, calibrate their tone, ask open-ended questions, predict follow–up questions, be an active listener, assess their audience, and conduct some background research on the person they will be interviewing.
