Jill Soloway: ‘We Have a Trans Civil Rights Problem’

Jill Soloway won her first Emmy on Sunday, for Outstanding Directing on a Comedy Series for the hit Amazon original show Transparent. And she used her acceptance speech to call for action on transgender rights.

“We don’t have a trans tipping point yet,” she said. “We have a trans civil rights problem, so go to transequality.org and vote to pass the trans equality bill. Thank you,” said Soloway.

The bill, which was introduced this summer, would explicitly prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation in employment, housing, education, credit, public accommodations, jury service, and federally funded programs.

It was a big night for Transparent as Jeffrey Tambor took the Best Lead Actor Emmy for his work on the series.

Transparent‘s second season will land on Amazon Prime Video in December. It’s been a big success for Amazon – both critically and in terms of popularity. The studio has already greenlit a third season – months before the second season even premieres.
