Jessica Jones is now available on Netflix and there are likely many a Marvel fan who can’t wait to get off work and dive in.

While fans of Jessica Jones and her noir-esque story will appreciate the dark tones and complex topics hit upon as we follow Jones in her life and struggles, they may not know all the work it took to get from idea to full show.

Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg recently spoke about how the show came together and the freedom that came with working with a more obscure character in the Marvel universe.

Rosenberg admitted that, unlike Daredevil, Jessica Jones doesn’t have a long history that has to mesh with the story. Therefore, she was pretty free to do her thing.

She said, “It may surprise you but I had free rein. Part of it’s because Jessica Jones is a lesser-known character, so there wasn’t the same kind of expectations that came with it, like Daredevil, which has a very, very long history.”

She added, “There was a lot of freedom to really explore her storytelling and they understood as much as anyone else what the original material was. It was Marvel’s first adult comic book that they’d ever put out. They went into it eyes wide open and completely embraced it, as did Netflix. … That surprised me just that Marvel honestly really just supported my vision and contributed to it, really.”

If you’ve seen the trailers for Jessica Jones, you know that the show does seem to explore some of the darker paths of life a little more freely than other Marvel shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or Agent Carter.

Jessica Jones is damaged and comes from a background of being used and abused. She is open about her struggles, her alcoholic tendencies and her freedom with her sexuality.

However, don’t expect her to use that sexuality to get what she wants. As an rising star playing a rather feminist-friendly role, Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter doesn’t use a familiar feminine noir tactic.

She said, “We never fell into the typical tropes of female P.I. shows. You’ll never see me putting on a short skirt and heels to use my ‘sexuality’ to get what I want. I don’t want to seduce someone to get what I want. I don’t want to play that.”
