‘How I Met Your Mother’ Comes to an End Tonight

After a nine-year run, the series finale of How I Met Your Mother will air on CBS tonight at 8 p.m. ET. The hour-long episode will show Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) finally finishing the story he started telling his kids in the very first episode of how he met their mom, a conclusion that has been nearly a decade in the making.

The finale episode will, at least in part, take place during Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin’s (Cobie Smulders) wedding reception. The couple said “I do” in last week’s episode, and the rest of the cast has already met Ted’s future wife (played by Cristin Milioti). Since Milioti’s character plays in the wedding band, the stage is set for the meeting to finally take place.

There have been two major concerns about the finale of How I Met Your Mother. The first is whether the mother is already dead when Ted tells his kids the story of how they met. According to Milioti, that theory is “insane,” and not at all how the finale plays out. Whew, crisis averted.

The second fan concern about HIMYM is that the last episode will set the stage for Ted and his future wife to meet, but won’t actually show this happening. This would certainly be a letdown, but Harris says that isn’t how the show ends.

“Everyone was a little concerned in our midseason as to what the end game was,” Harris said. “But once we were confident that they knew what they were doing, and then once we actually were told a few weeks before what the actual end game was, it justified the means. It justified all of the long play of our show. It’s not, like, we end on the final scene and then they met. ‘Good night, everybody.’ It’s deeper than that.”

The How I Met Your Mother Spin-Off

All good things must come to an end, right? Maybe not. CBS has decided to do a spin-off of the popular sitcom called How I Met Your Dad. The plot for the spin-off is reportedly similar to How I Met Your Mother, and features a character who ends her marriage after a year and tries to get her life back on track in New York. Hopefully this spin-off will fare better than Joey, the spin-off to the much-loved Friends.
