“Hidden Cash” Groups Cause A Frenzy Across The U.S.

Hidden Cash is the handle for a group of people bent on spreading the love, monetarily, and they’re doing so across the country by placing envelopes filled with money in random places, then tweeting clues as to their whereabouts. Some contain $60, some up to $200, and for those who are following the Twitter feeds, the call of free money is too strong to resist.

The original Hidden Cash began in California, started by a man last month who says he is a real estate investor who wanted to give back to the community. All he asks in exchange for the dough is that the person who finds it “pays it forward” in some way, by giving back or by using the money to help someone else. So far, the people who have found the cash have earmarked it for anniversary gifts, lunch for coworkers, and coffee for strangers. One Fargo woman who claimed $200 says she found it at a recycling center.

“Hopped in the car and brought the recycling over and looked around the corner of the bin and found it right away,” said Carrie Darrah, who figured out the Twitter clue in record time. “I told the girls at work that I would buy them lunch tomorrow and not sure what else I will do with the rest.”

It’s not clear if the groups are connected, but several have been started in cities like Chicago and Milwaukee. One group has spread envelopes around Colorado and have asked whoever finds them to share a photo of themselves and tag them in it on Twitter.

“I think when good things happen, you tend to have a more positive outlook,” Chicago winner Tina Gaddy said. “It’s infectious.”
