Grammy Awards: Did Your Predictions Come True?

Well, the Grammys were last night and as expected there were twists, turns, upsets, and some screechy performances. Daft Punk emerged the big winners of the night, snagging five grammy awards, including “Album of the Year” and “Record of the Year”.

Daft Punk is now the toast of their native France, where congratulations have been pouring in. Did you expect them to win as big as they did?

I confess I did not. I was hit and miss with my predictions as you can see.

Here’s the results of the predictions for the night compared to the actual results.

Predicted Record of the Year: Imagine Dragons, “Radioactive”

Actual Winner: Daft Punk, “Get Lucky”

This is a case of me having little faith in the voters appreciation of veterans and leaning towards everything current and trendy. I was wrong and I’m actually glad to have been wrong. “Get Lucky” was a catchy throw back to late 70s/early 80s funk and a great song.

Predicted Album of the Year: Taylor Swift, “Red”

Actual Winner: Daft Punk, “Random Access Memories”

I don’t know who was more shocked by the results, myself or Taylor Swift:

She recovered brilliantly, though. Again, this was a case of me assuming that popularity would win out in the end. “Red” sold over 1.21 million albums in a single week, the biggest sales numbers of any album since the early 2000s. Apparently more was at state for album of the year than sales.

Now for the predictions I got right.

Song of the Year: Lorde, “Royals”

“Royals” was one of those songs that was everywhere last year. Amazing considering its less than glamourous origin: Soundcloud. The practically viral nature of the single resonated with the self aware “Selfie” generation, and a Grammy award was to be expected for the new artist.

Best New Artist: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

Really, did anyone expect anyone else to win this? Given all the massive exposure combined with all the other awards that had been collected on the way to and at the Grammys (including Rap awards over veterans like Jay Z), it was inevitable. However, there is such a thing as over-exposed. While I did expect Macklemore & Ryan Lewis to dominate at the awards, I also anticipate they have already peaked. Do not expect much or any of the same next year.
