“Emerald City” Gives Dark, Bloody View Of Oz

“Emerald City”, a new miniseries picked up by NBC, will give us a dark, gritty view of the colorful world we got to know through Dorothy’s eyes in the classic “The Wizard Of Oz”.

The series is slated for ten episodes, but could go much longer depending on its initial success. Because the story is based on the original books by L. Frank Baum, there are considerable storylines to draw from.

While a new take on the old story has been done many times–in various mediums–NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt says this version will be very dark and bloody and will focus on a very headstrong girl who finds herself in the middle of an epic battle for control of Oz. According to Deadline, the story will be told in a way that is reminiscent of “Game Of Thrones”, which will make for some very interesting television.

The success of so many shows featuring re-imaginings of fairy tales in recent years may have something to do with the network’s decision to pick up the series, and with the enormous success of the Broadway adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s “Wicked”, it’s likely that the show will find viewers right away.
