Eddie Izzard: British Comedian Completes 27 Marathons in 27 Days

Eddie Izzard, the 54-year old British comedian whose humor is reminiscent of Monty Python’s, celebrated a huge accomplishment on Sunday, having completed 27 marathons in 27 days, for charity. His celebration began with the uncorking of a bottle of sparkling wine, and a huge drink–straight from the bottle.

At the end of the 27th run, Eddie Izzard quite literally couldn’t speak. He burst into tears while talking with the BBC.

“Thank you. It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m very tired,” he said. “So thank you for everyone who’s donated. This was tough. So don’t do this at home. I don’t know if I can say much more.”

Sunday was the most grueling of the 27 days, since an unexpected day of rest meant he ran two marathons that day.

During the 707 miles Eddie Izzard ran, he suffered dehydration, sunstroke, and extreme exhaustion–overcoming them all.

Eddie Izzard’s run was in the name of former South African President Nelson Mandela. He ran one marathon for each year he was imprisoned, wind up at the foot of a large statue of the peace maker. The comedian raised more than $1 million for this year’s Sport Relief.
