E3 2012: Miyamoto Confirms That Zelda Wii U Is In Experimental Stage

Nintendo’s E3 press conference was pretty bad. Every blog and news site has beaten it to death and we can now move on with our lives until we get the next embarrassing string of information in regards to the Wii U. Nintendo could have avoided all of this if they at least announced one core title from a major franchise like Zelda of Mario (New Super Mario Bros. U doesn’t count).

Nintendo realizes this and has been on what seems like a bit of damage control. It all started last night when the company announced that Fire Emblem Awakening, the next game in the long-running RPG franchise for the 3DS, would be coming to North America after not even mentioning it during the software showcase. Nintendo is now giving some Wii U doubters some hope by saying that a new Zelda game is in the works.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Shigeru Miyamoto said that the company is now in the experimental phase of creating a new The Legend of Zelda game. They didn’t show or say anything because they’re still trying to find a way to “bring Zelda to a very big audience.” He says the experiments are in response to the fact that while Skyward Sword was well liked by a lot of players (including yours truly), it didn’t resonate with as many players as past Zelda games have.

People were obviously hoping for a new Zelda game after Nintendo showed off a tech demo last year featuring the Link from Twilight Princess fighting Gohma in the Temple of Time. It was an impressive demo, but it was just that – a demo. Still, the Zelda game that comes out of Nintendo’s experimentation could very well look like this.

Personally, I’m still partial to the fake Majora’s Mask video that went up right before Nintendo’s E3 presser and raised all of our hopes to impossible heights. Here’s hoping we get something that truly lives up to the Zelda name once something is revealed. Until then, we will have to settle for Nintendo Land’s poor man Zelda.
