American actor Dane Dehaan loves Andrew Garfield … and hamburgers.
The 28-year old never thought he’d get the chance to test for the role of Harry Osborne, aka the Green Goblin, in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
“I couldn’t even get an audition for this movie, for like, a really long time,” he said. “They had a different idea for who they wanted for Harry. I just kept banging down the door, ‘Give me a chance!’ Then finally, I got my shot but it was three months of not hearing anything and I thought it was over.”
Dehaan can partly thank Andrew Garfield for that.
Film director Marc Webb spoke about how Garfield was a huge advocate for Dehaan. “We brought him in at the last minute. It’s really about dynamics and Andrew and Dane had this brotherly relationship that emerged when they were screen testing.”
30-year old Garfield, who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man, said that he had seen Dehann in Aliens, a play in New York, but also did a play reading with him in which they were playing Leopold and Loeb.
“There are actors that make you come alive and Dane is one of them. That was it for me,” Garfield said. “Then for screen test it was like we really loved each other and got each other.”
Finally, after waiting by the phone for a week after the test, Dehaan got the call. “It was just a huge battle,” he said.
Dehaan is previously known for playing Jesse on the HBO series In Treatment. He has also appeared in Chronicle, Kill Your Darlings, and Lincoln (as a union soldier).
When asked by Mania what was the most challenging scene in the new Spider-Man film, Dehaan said, “The final battle between me and Spider-Man was pretty challenging. That set was 100 degrees at least, and I had a 50-pound suit. They were pouring ice water down my suit and it was turning to steam.” In fact, Dehaan lost 7 pounds in two days due to those conditions.
Before filming, Dehaan spent eight months rigorously training and eating piles of vegetables and protein to transform himself into the well-muscled villain.
“People are always like, it must have been so hard,” DeHaan told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. “I was like, c’mon people, I’m the Green Goblin! Who cares if you have to eat a lot to be the Green Goblin? It’s the coolest thing ever!”
However, Dehaan did suffer slight emotional side effects due to the diet and fitness regimen, prompting his trainer to recommend that Dehaan occasionally give himself permission to indulge in an “unapproved” meal.
“So my wife and I went to brunch, and I ordered a burger, and it was my first burger in four months,” Dehaan said. “And I took a bite of it, and I literally started crying in the restaurant. She was like, ‘What’s wrong?!’, and I was like, ‘It’s just so delicious!’ And she said,‘You need to stop crying.‘”
Dehaan, as well as Garfield, Emma Stone, and Jamie Foxx, can be seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which opens today nationwide.
