Christine El Moussa is eternally grateful to an astute fan of the hit HGTV show, Flip or Flop, on which she stars with husband Tarek. That fan noticed an unusual lump on Tarek El Moussa’s neck while watching the show, and sent an email to producers.

“This is not a joke,” the email read. “I’m a registered nurse. I’ve been watching Flip or Flop. I noticed that the host Tarek has a large nodule on his thyroid, and he needs to have it checked out.”
Nurse Ryan Reid is the fan that Christine El Moussa likely thinks of often these days. Tarek El Moussa has since undergone surgery for thyroid cancer that had already spread to his lymph nodes.
“I feel good, but I don’t have the energy I used to have,” he said in a recent interview with People magazine.
Christine El Moussa is breathing a huge sigh of relief, now that Tarek is in remission. She and her husband have since welcomed a second child–a baby boy–into their family. Tarek’s diagnosis changed things from that perspective, too.
“We found out Tarek had cancer, and we asked the doctor if that would affect our chances of having a child,” Christina El Moussa says. “They said that if you go through radiation, which Tarek had too, then you should not get pregnant from that sperm from six months to a year. So, right away, we did sperm banking and [tried] IVF.”
After two failed attempts, and one miscarriage, she was pregnant.

“I had to be super strict,” Christina explains. “I had to do one full week in bed. For 13 weeks after that, I couldn’t go for a walk and couldn’t lift anything over a gallon of milk. We planned it during Christmas break so I wasn’t working. We did everything we could to make sure this one worked.”
Both Tarek and Christine El Moussa admit their lives have been forever changed since his cancer diagnosis.
“There is always that chance of reoccurrence but every year that goes by the odds of reoccurrence goes down so it’s good,” Tarek says. “I have slowed down quite a bit. Which is actually a good thing because I can actually relax now.”
