Channing Tatum Hopes Gambit Isn’t a Hero In the New ‘X-Men’ Film

Channing Tatum has been rumored to have a possible role in the next X-Men film.

While no details have been released about the upcoming film, the 22 Jump Street actor has shared his perspective about one of the characters he could possibly portray – Gambit.

The famous character is commonly depicted as a thieving mutant, super-hero who uses his powers to control pure kinetic energy.

During a recent interview with MTV News, the 34-year-old actor discussed how he’s hoping that Gambit’s character takes on an antagonistic persona, as opposed to being the hero. The role of Gambit is one that Tatum has shown interest in for quite some time.

“We’ve talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the ‘hero, superhero movie.’ Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He’s a thief … I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones.”

According to Yahoo! News, Tatum also revealed that he has been in discussion with X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner about the upcoming spin-off project. He explained that he and Donner bounced ideas and concepts back and forth for the new film. However, everything is just conceptual right now.

“Creatively, we’re starting to chug forward. Obviously there’s nothing [official]. There are only conversations and dreams right now, really. I’ve been pretty vocal about wanting to be the part of Gambit for a very long time,” Tatum explained.

“It’s a weird, pinching-myself moment that we’re even having the conversation. The machine of the Marvel world is so ginormous that it’s literally like climbing a mountain, getting one of these movies made, and all of the pieces that go along with it.”

The next installment of the X-Men movie series is tentatively scheduled to be released some time in 2016.
