Blythe Danner Heartbroken Over Daughter’s Divorce

In the movies and in television, the relationship between son in-law and mother in-law is usually a contentious one, which makes some people surprised whenever the two get along in real life.

And that’s certainly the case with Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow’s mom, Blythe Danner, because the two have always gotten along superbly and Danner really loves Martin, and is extremely heartbroken that him and Paltrow are breaking up.

According to a source for Us Weekly, Danner pleaded with her daughter to work things out with the Coldplay singer, but it obviously didn’t work.

“[She’s] really upset,” revealed the source. “She loves Chris. She begged Gwyneth not to end it, that he’s a good man. But Gwyneth had to do what she felt was best.”

In addition, the source said those close to Paltrow and Martin could see things weren’t working out, and it was evident in the way the couple looked at each other and communicated in public. Plus, it seems that Paltrow was the one who wanted to end things, not Martin, suggested the source.

“They really tried to make it work,” the source explained. “You could tell something was wrong, though, over the last few months. You could see a sadness in each of their eyes.”

But despite the marriage ending, the famous couple took a trip to the Bahamas together and brought along their children. It wasn’t a reconciliation trip though, because there were no signs of the two being affectionate at all.

Additionally, Paltrow has been using the “conscious uncoupling” term since announcing the split, so the trip could just be a part of the uncoupling process. Plus, doing things together while the marriage is ending fits right along with what the term means: Two people consciously ending their union, and coming to grips that they’ll have other great loves in their lifetime.

“There are no signs of any PDA, holding hands, or kissing on the beach. There was definitely a noticeably intimate distance,” said the source. But the kids appeared to be “happy and playful.”
