Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Gets Dissected By Historians

One of the biggest selling points of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series is how it recreates historical events and locations and lets you live them in the game. You may be wondering, however, just how accurate these recreations are. Well, that’s a job for historians Bob Whitaker and Dr. Bryan Glass.

Whitaker has started a new video series on YouTube called History Respawned. The point of the video series is to look at video games from a historical perspective and discuss how accurate the game’s representation of history is. For the first episode, Whitaker is joined by Dr. Bryan Glass, history professor at Texas State University, to compare the game’s locales, characters and more against the real history of the time.

You’re going to want to watch this if you’re a history buff, or if you have any interest in the historical pirate. If you don’t have any interest, you might want to watch it anyway. Who knows – you might actually learn something.

A word of note: The below video has spoilers from early in the game. If you care about that sort of thing, you might want to watch the video after you played through the first few hours of the game.

If you want more pirate history, you might want to check out Ubisoft’s own history series that it produced with VICE Magazine. It’s more sensationalistic than the above the video, but it’s definitely entertaining.
