For the third week in a row, the post apocalyptic film “The Hunger Games” is the king of the box office. This is in spite of the “American Reunion” crew putting up a strong showing. “The Hunger Games” pulled in another $33.5 million bringing its total to $302.9 million.
The movie is the fourth true installment in the series, but the “American Pie” brand has several straight to DVD movies. ‘Reunion’ features the entire original cast of Jim (Jason Biggs), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), Oz (Chris Klein), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), and Stifler (Seann William Scott) returning to East Great Falls, Michigan for their 3 years too late 10 year reunion. What follows is typical “American Pie” humor; an awkward sexual situation involving Jim, Stifler causing problems, and the other 3 doing random crap that does nothing to further the story. The movie had a pretty good showing in theaters making $21.5 million
The rest of the top 5 featured a remastered Titanic movie unconverted to 3D at #3 making $17.35 million. Flop Wrath of the Titans at #4 with an underwhelming $15 million. And rounding out the top 5 was the Julia Roberts Snow White flop “Mirror Mirror” which made a paltry $11 million.
“American Reunion” once again follows the tradition of professional movie reviewers being out of touch with the rest of humanity. Over at Rotten Tomatoes the critics have given it a 44% while movie goers gave it a whopping 80%.
