Amanda Knox was once again found guilty for the murder of Meredith Kercher by a jury in Florence, Italy. The court sentened her to 28 years and 6 months in jail for her crime.
It’s likely, however, that even if Italy were to attempt to extradite her back to Italy that the U.S. would refuse. In this country a person can’t be tried twice for the same crime.
Amanda Knox’s former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, was found guilty as well, and was sentenced to 25 years behind bars. He wasn’t present when the verdict was read on Thursday, however his passport will be taken from him to prevent him from fleeing the country.
British college student Meredith Kercher was found murdered on November 2, 2007 in the cottage she shared with Knox in Perugia where she was part of an exchange program. The Kercher family was pleased with the court’s decision.
“To lose someone you love so dearly is hard enough, especially in the way she died, but that has been compounded by the fact that it has gone on for six years and three months,” Meredith’s brother, Lyle Kercher said.
Amanda Knox was floored by the verdict.
“I am frightened and saddened by this unjust verdict. Having been found innocent before, I expected better from the Italian justice system,” she said in a statement from her family’s home in Seattle. “This has gotten out of hand.”
Knox and Sollecito were first convicted of the murder in 2009, then acquitted in 2011 on appeal.
Last year the supreme court ordered a re-trial, leading to the guilty verdicts issued on Thursday.
Do you think the Italian court system is corrupt? Do you think Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito received a fair trial or do you think the jurors had them condemned before the trial was over?
Do you believe Amanda Knox is innocent or guilty of the crime of murdering Meredith Kercher?
