Amanda Peet Defends ‘Game Of Thrones’ Despite Show’s Brutal Rape Scenes

The 5th season of Game of Thrones has drawn plenty of controversy, from rape, bloody battles, torture and sexism. Now, the wife of GOT producer David Benioff, Amanda Peet, speaks out in the defense of the show.

What caused the fans to accuse the show of sexism was the brutal rape of Sansa Stark, played by Sophie Turner, and Cersei Lannister’s ‘Walk of Shame’ played by Lena Headey.

In the aftermath of the big finale, the 43-year-old Togetherness actress Peet, has come to be an advocate of the show. Aside from disagreeing with the criticisms of sexism, Peet also concludes that the female characters on the show are some of the strongest women on television.

“I think it’s really misplaced. They write some of the greatest female characters that are on television,” Peet said in an interview with The Wrap.

Peet also echoed an often repeated sentiment saying, “It’s a misogynist world, this world that George R. R. Martin created, but we have to experience it without thinking that people are condoning this.”

Peet highly praised the roles of the women in GOT . “It’s much more insidious to have middling, ancillary female roles where the women are not part of the plot — where they don’t advance anything,” said Peet.

“Wife roles, girlfriend roles, there are very few of those in ‘Game of Thrones.’ If someone takes their clothes off and it’s a massive part of the plot? So be it,” Peet argued.

However, all her points about the show weren’t positive. Peet admitted that she was devastated over the season’s finale especially when Jon Snow was repeatedly stabbed.

“I was furious. He was already in Belfast, he’s back to work now on the next season, but I texted him and said, ‘I’m single now!’” Amanda Peet added, laughing.
