Brooke Burke Beats Cancer, Lands ‘Shape’ Cover

Dancing With The Stars co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet has recently come out after winning her battle with cancer to say that she feels as if she’s just beginning the best part of her life. The 42-year-old was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2012, but now tells Shape Magazine that she is cancer-free after having undergone a thyroidectomy. “They took it out, it’s gone, and it’s all good,” she said.

Burke had been seeing a specialist and getting treatment for Hashimoto’s disease, the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, for more than a decade, but said her cancer had only been discovered through a routine physical check-up. After a lump had been found on her body, Burke had an ultrasound and biopsies, which allowed doctors to conclusively find cancer. “But the prognosis was great,” she said.

Post-surgery, Brooke was required to stay out of the sun for a while, but she returned to her regular workout routine just a few weeks after surgery. On Sunday, she attended an intense SoulCycle spinning class and hit the beach in Malibu with her husband David Charvet to take advantage of their weekend without their children Heaven Rain, Shaya Braven and Brooke’s two daughters, Neriah and Sierra, from a previous marriage.

“I started working out the day I was allowed to. That’s just me. I feel better after my workout for a million reasons,” Burke said.

Burke, however, is still taking care of her health and making adjustments to her thyroid medication. “That was a little tricky, but that’s one of the challenges with thyroid issues: figuring out the amount of Synthroid you need, getting your hormone levels right, and then making adjustments,” she said. This cancer survivor is in great shape and gracing the cover of Shape’s September issue wearing only a pair of bikini briefs. “What is age, anyway? I feel young because I’m beginning a new chapter in my life, which is so exciting,” she said.
