Top Gun 2 Likely to Arrive Before the Next Mission: Impossible Sequel

Those of you who can’t wait to feast your hungry, cinema-addled eyes on yet another installment of the wildly popular “Mission: Impossible” series may some serious waiting to do. According to Paramount president Adam Goodman, there’s a very strong possibility that audiences will see “Top Gun 2” before another “M:I” endeavor. Good news for people who love jet planes, bad news for spy movie aficionados.

Too young to remember “Top Gun”? The 1986 action film, which was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Tony Scott, featured a young Tom Cruise as Maverick, a hot-shot fighter pilot who enjoys breaking all of the rules. His rampant disregard for authority soon lands him in the arms of his instructor (Kelly McGillis), an older woman our hero woos by singing “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” to her in a bar. Classy? You know it.

Some people love “Top Gun”, others, well, not so much. I happen to think it’s a tad overrated, though I’m not above watching the flick whenever I catch it on cable. Apparently there’s still enough of an interest in the original movie to push the sequel closer to production. Cruise has already agreed to star in the picture, so I’m not sure what they’re waiting for at this point.

This is what Goodman told The Hollywood Reporter:

We’ll likely make a Top Gun sequel with Tom Cruise first. Jerry Bruckheimer would produce, with Tony Scott returning to direct. All parties are moving ahead. We’ve hired Peter Craig to write the script.

Twitter reactions reside below. Some people want “Mission: Impossible 5”, others can’t wait for “Top Gun 2”. Personally, I’m holding out for “Cocktail 2”. Recognize. Before diving into those embedded conversations, why not take a trip into the “Danger Zone”, courtesy of 80’s soundtrack guru Kenny Loggins.

Couldn’t we skip Top Gun 2 and go straight to Mission: Impossible 5? http://t.co/g3zhl7NL(image) 2 minutes ago via Facebook ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

There will be a Top Gun 2? What kind of abomination is this? I bet you Kenny Loggins himself will protest the film. #dangerzone(image) 3 hours ago via TweetDeck ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Speaking of sequels no one wanted, how about: Zoolander 2, Dumb and Dumber 2, Anchorman 2 and Top Gun 2. They are making a TOP GUN 2!! #ohno(image) 1 day ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto
