Flipboard Introduces Curated Video Service: Flipboard TV

Popular news aggregator Flipboard has announced a new video aggregation service, according to a company press release.

Flipboard has carved out a market for itself as one of the leading news aggregators. It was originally released exclusively for the iPad in 2010, and was one of the apps that helped showcase the platform’s potential. Over the years, it has grown, acquired rival Zite and continued to evolve.

With the latest announcement, Flipboard is expanding to curated videos on a range of topics and interests in a premium, ad-free format. According to the company’s post, “Flipboard TV is a curated video service that will be available inside Flipboard, featuring professionally-produced content across a variety of topical areas, including channels devoted to News, Business, Politics, Entertainment, and Technology. For those interested in entertainment, you can enjoy videos from sources such as Variety, US Weekly, and Rolling Stone. If you’re looking for business videos, we have content from Barron’s, Bloomberg Media, The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, and more; the Politics channel will deliver videos from The Recount and others; and local news will include KCRA (Sacramento, Calif.), WESH (Orlando, Fla.) and KCCI (Des Moines, Iowa.)”

The service will be available for a three-month free trial, and cost $2.99 per month after that. Initially, the service is launching exclusively on the Samsung Galaxy S20.

“Samsung continues to innovate to make your life and the things you love to do easier and better. Bringing Flipboard TV into the Galaxy experience gives people a new way to unlock high-quality short-form video, from their smartphone,” said Ignacio de Mingo, Samsung Electronics America senior director and head of loyalty platforms. “As Flipboard takes its next leap in content discovery, we’re thrilled that Flipboard TV will be exclusively available on the Galaxy S20 line at launch.”

  • Flipboard Acquires Zite From, Partners With CNN

Flipboard has acquired news reader Zite from CNN, and the two have partnered to put more content from CNN personalities on the Flipboard app.

“As a news-loving entrepreneur, I’ve long admired the work of both of these companies: Zite has always amazed me with its ability to give readers great content centered around specific topics—tens of thousands of them—and CNN has long been a pioneering force for 24/7 news coverage around the world,” says Flipboard founder Mike McCue. “We acquired Zite from CNN to address something we’ve heard from a lot of you: although you can already read thousands of sources from over 20 regions on Flipboard, you want easier and better ways to discover content about the things that matter to you. Adding Zite’s expertise in personalization and recommendations to Flipboard’s product experience and powerful curator community will create an unparalleled personal magazine for our millions of readers.”

Zite co-founder and CTO Mike Klaas writes on the Zite blog:

Flipboard has been linked with our history since the moment we decided to build a news product. What they were able to accomplish on the barely-capable hardware of the first-gen iPad amazed us and inspired us to build Zite exclusively for the iPad (a decision that seemed crazier then than it would now). When we launched people instantly wondered if we were a “Flipboard killer”, and I’ve had to answer more questions about being in their shadow in the last three years than I care to count. At times, I found the comparison frustrating: Zite’s focus was on topics, while Flipboard was mostly about publications; Flipboard was a reader for social media but Zite tried hardest to find articles you couldn’t find on your Twitter feed. The two products look superficially similar but couldn’t be more different under the hood.

I should have realized that the comparison kept coming up because both companies share the same vision. As I have gotten to know the folks behind Flipboard, I’ve met a group of people whose commitment to building an amazing news reading experience rivals our own. We’re both trying to help people discover great content that feels like it was hand-picked just for them. We’re both dissatisfied with a world where ads force an article to be the second-class citizen on the screen. We both refuse to accept that monetization must be antagonistic to content.

Our goals are the same, and if our methods are different, that is not a source of weakness but of strength: Flipboard has an impressive curation team, unrivalled publisher network, and incredible scale. Zite has world-class recommendations technology and expertise in topic-based discovery. Both companies have amazing design and mobile engineering talent. I’m absolutely convinced that joining forces with Flipboard is the right next step in achieving the vision we started with back in 2005.

The Zite and Flipboard teams are being integrated, but at least for now, Zite will continue to be available as a separate app. That will change, however. Klaas says the goal is to get the Zite experience in Flipboard right before shutting down the app down. They’ll also build a way to transition Zite data to Flipbard. Just don’t expect anything for at least six months.

Zite CEO Mark Johnson will not be joining Flipboard. He says in an LinkedIn Influencer post:

Personally, my situation is a bit different and I won’t be joining Flipboard. I’m really glad that I ignored the odds and shepherded Zite through our CNN years. I’ve grown as a CEO and I’m very proud of my team. However, after being at four different successful startups, I’ve never started one myself and it’s time to change that. Though I’ve got a number of ideas, I haven’t settled on what I’d like to do next. So, I’ve decided to take some time off to think, hike, consult, travel, advise, meet, write, dream, read, study, and – probably most importantly – relax. For me, the best ideas come when I’m not looking for them.

As mentioned, Flipboard is getting more content from the CNN crew. This includes several magazines: The Lead with Jake Tapper, GPS Daily (from Fareed Zakaria) and Go “Inside Politics” (from John King).

CNN Money says the deal is valued at $60 million.

CNN acquired Zite nearly three years ago.

  • Zite Makes the Jump to iPhone

In a week that has seen news of Flipboard and Google Currents both coming to the iPhone, popular news personalization app Zite (iTunes link) completes the trifecta today by releasing its own iPhone version.

Zite debuted in March with an iPad app that delivered personalized news. The app allowed users to input their preferences, as well as their Twitter, Google Reader, and Read It Later accounts, then used that data to craft a news homepage tailored to their interests. The app delivers users a collection of news stories it thinks they will like and, in Pandora-like fashion, gives them the option to like or dislike stories. It incorporates users’ preferences and learns from them, in order to bring users more of the kinds of stories they want to see, and fewer of those they don’t. It also provides users a variety of sharing options, so they can post stories to Twitter, Facebook, and more.

The app is universal, which means it will run on both iPhone and iPad without the need to download separate apps. More importantly, it allows users to set up a profile, so that those who have been using the iPad app since March can transfer their preferences to the iPhone version without having to re-train the app.

The company took to Twitter and its blog to announce the release today.

The release of the iPhone app comes on the same day as the news that Zite for iPad was selected as a top news app in the Apple Rewind 2011 roundup, which listed of the top music, movies, and apps in the iTunes store for 2011.

CNN Acquires iPad News Reader App Zite

CNN announced that it has acquired tech company Zite, which makes a news app of the same name for the iPad. CNN says it has already added Zite to its portfolio of digital products as a separate, stand-alone business.

Zite is an iPad news reader that uses personalization to determine what to show you.

KC Estenson, GM of CNN Digital said, “Zite represents the next generation of content discovery and personalized publishing and CNN wants to help lead in that space. We think we can advance the industry in a meaningful way that helps content creators grow their businesses while growing the distribution of a product that people already love. Zite’s technology can also be used to help CNN’s Websites and apps serve more personalized content, making our current digital services even better.”

Zite CEO Mark Johnson added, “Zite is thrilled about combining forces with CNN to create a world-class news discovery platform. In CNN, we have found a partner who shares our vision and passion. Being part of the CNN family gives us the capital to grow Zite’s business and continue to innovate in the space.”

Zite is currently available for free on the iPad from the App Store or iTunes.

Zite is currently only available on the iPad, but the company says it hopes to expand to other platforms – at least that’s what the FAQ says. A spokesperson tells WebProNews there are no Android plans at the moment.
