  • Robin Williams’ Wife Reacts To His Death

Robin Williams’ Wife Reacts To His Death

Robin Williams, 63, was found dead at his home in Tiburon, California yesterday. Although the coroner and his rep speculated that suicide was the cause, it wasn’t until earlier today, after the autopsy, that the true cause of death was revealed.

According to Lt. Keith Boyd of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, Williams’ death was cause by suicide due to asphyxia. Robin had hung himself with a belt, causing him to suffocate to death. There were also cuts on his wrist and a pocketknife was found near him.

The last time Williams was seen alive was around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday night. His wife, Susan Schneider, went to sleep at approximately 10:30 p.m., however Robin never retreated to bed with her. The next morning, Susan got ready for work and left the house thinking that Robin was still asleep.

After Williams failed to answer the door, his personal assistant became concerned and entered the home. That is when he found Robin in a “slightly superseded in a seated position.” At 11:55 a.m., an emergency call was made, and authorities arrived at the scene and pronounced Robin dead.

Robin’s death has seemed so sudden to all those who knew him, and admired him. However, no one was more shocked than his wife and daughter. “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken,” said Schneider, William’s third wife. “As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

Robin’s daughter, Zelda Williams, took to Twitter to mourn her father. “You — you alone will have the stars as no one else has them … In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night … You — only you — will have stars that can laugh,” Zelda quoted from a passage from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. She then added, “I love you. I miss you. I’ll try to keep looking up. Z.”

  • This Week’s Nintendo Download Finds A Link To The Past

Nintendo may be going through a rough patch these days, but that doesn’t mean it can neglect its responsibilities. Not only is the company addressing its weaknesses, but it’s also releasing quality content on the virtual console again.

Nintendo announced this morning that The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is now available on the Wii U virtual console. If you have only played last year’s A Link Between Worlds, you’ll want to check out the game that inspired the best 3DS game of 2013.

As for the 3DS virtual console, players can now purchase the original Mario Bros. Note that this isn’t Super Mario Bros., but the original competitive/cooperative Mario Bros. that challenges two players to take on the roles of Mario and Luigi to collect coins and defeat enemies.

If you’re looking for more content this week, you might want to check out the Wii U Super Indie Sale. Starting today at noon and lasting until February 20, you can buy one of five indie games and get the others for 60 percent off. If you already own one, the promotion will be available from the start. The games taking part in this promotion are Spin the Bottle: Bumpie’s Party, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, Mighty Switch Forces! • Nintendo Held Its Own Big Launch Event Right Across The Street From The Xbox One Launch

While the big news on Friday was the launch of the Xbox One in New York City’s Times Square, the Nintendo World Store across the street was having its own launch event. While the Wii U has already been out on the market for a year, the console finally got a game worth owning the system for on Friday.

On November 22, Nintendo released two high-profile games for its Wii U and 3DS consoles. The first – Super Mario 3D World – is the kind of game that you should buy a Wii U for. Nintendo knows this and is pursuing a huge marketing campaign to get the console and game into the homes of consumers this holiday season.

The second – The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds – is the sequel to the SNES classic The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. As you can imagine, it’s a pretty big deal for Zelda fans around the world.

Now, if these were any other games, they would be released and that would be that. This is Nintendo we’re talking about though and the company decided to hold a launch event at its Nintendo World Store that rivals what Microsoft did at the Best Buy Theater for the Xbox One launch.

    Check it out:

While it may not be as exciting as the Xbox One launch, the fact that some fans waited over 15 hours to get their hands on a new Nintendo title shows some hardcore dedication. Now if only Nintendo could channel some of that dedication into hardware sales.

  • Mario, Zelda Highlight This Week’s Nintendo Download

Mario and Zelda remain the top two franchises that Nintendo can always look to in its quest to sell more hardware. As such, the company is looking at an increase in console sales this weekend as new Mario and Zelda games launch on the Wii U and 3DS respectively.

In this week’s Nintendo Download, Nintendo notes that the Wii U will be getting the long awaited Super Mario 3D World on Friday. The game will be available to download starting at midnight. It promises the kind of 3D Mario platforming experience that we have come to expect from every Nintendo console since the release of Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64.

Joining Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U this week is puzzle/platformer EDGE. The game, which has been available on PC for some time now, challenges players to navigate their way around precarious environmental challenges as a block that can only move in one of four directions.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, two big first-party titles are hitting on Friday. The first is the eagerly anticipated The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. The title brings with it a host of new innovations for the series, including an entirely new way to approach dungeons as Link can now rent or buy every item he needs to complete the game from the beginning.

Joining Zelda this week on the 3DS is Mario Party: Island Tour. This marks the third-time the party game has shown up on handhelds, but this version allows four players to play together using just one gamecard. It also features an all-new single player mode for those who would rather play alone.

After you’ve had your fill of Mario and Zelda, you can kick back with the latest DLC for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies. This first DLC case challenges players to prove the innocence of a killer whale. This particular case serves as a prequel to the events of Dual Destinies so fans will not want to miss out.

Check out the list below to see the other games available on Wii U and 3DS this week:

  • Brawl Brothers (Virtual Console on Wii U)
  • Coaster Crazy Deluxe (Nintendo eShop on Wii U)
  • The Mysterious Cities of Gold: Secret Paths (Nintendo eShop on Wii U)
  • City Connection (Virtual Console on Nintendo 3DS)
  • Christmas Wonderland 3 (Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS)
  • Jewel Match 3 (Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS)
  • Ohno Odyssey (Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS)
  • Hands On! Tangrams (DSiWare on Nintendo DSi)

  • Nintendo Direct Details Upcoming 3DS Games

All the attention this week may be on the impending launch of the PS4, but Nintendo isn’t letting that keep it silent. Instead, it decided to host a Nintendo Direct today focusing on the world’s most popular dedicated gaming device – the Nintendo 3DS.

Starting off, Nintendo reconfirmed that both The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and its accompanying 3DS bundle will be available on November 22. There’s not much else to say about the game with it being so close to launch. Instead, check out this new trailer for the title:

Next up is Mario Party: Island Tour – the latest mini-game collection for the 3DS. It comes out on November 22, but is targeting an entirely different market. Nintendo announced that all the mini-games can be shared among four players from one game cart for those who can’t force friends to buy the game. It also has a sizable single-player mode complete with boss fights.

For JRPG fans, Nintendo announced that Bravely Default will be coming to North America on February 7. It will release a limited collector’s edition of the title that comes with an art book, soundtrack CD and AR cards. Here’s a new trailer for it:

As for Professor Layton fans, the final game in the series – Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy – will be released on February 28. Here’s a new trailer for it:

In other 3DS news, Nintendo will be releasing a 3DS system update next month that will allow you to create a Nintendo Network ID on the handheld and link it to your Wii U. By doing this, you’ll be able to use your eShop funds across both platforms. Nintendo notes that a Nintendo Network ID isn’t necessary for 3DS users, but it will be required to access demos and other free content.

Speaking of free content, the 3DS will be getting Miiverse in the same update. The handheld will also be getting YouTube later this month.

Despite today’s Nintendo Direct being mostly about the 3DS, Nintendo did manage to sneak in two Wii U updates. The first was a new sizzle reel highlighting all the indie content coming to the Wii U and 3DS eShop in the coming months:

The other Wii U news was a new trailer for Super Mario 3D World highlighting “10 new things” players can discover in the game. The trailer is full of minor spoilers regarding unlockables and stages so you’ve been warned. If you don’t want anything about the game spoiled for you, don’t watch the video. You should also avoid Nintendo’s Twitter feed as it has been tweeting about the spoiler as well:

With the PS4 only a few days away and the Xbox One launching on November 22, it’s no better time to be a gamer. That’s doubly true for the Nintendo faithful as the Wii U and 3DS are both getting some of the best looking games of the year(s) over the next few months.

  • ‘The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds’ Gameplay, Music Previewed

Nintendo just this week announced that it managed to sell fewer than 500,000 Wii U consoles in the past six months. Those sales (and, in fact almost the total number of Wii U sales to date) were easily eclipsed by the 3.89 million 3DS consoles sold during that same time period. So with Microsoft and Sony preparing to challenge Nintendo further in the living room this fall, the company appears that it will be a handheld gaming company in the near-future.

Backing up this notion is the stellar software lineup the 3DS has seen this year – especially from Nintendo itself. Fire Emblem Awakening, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, and Pokemon X & Y were all major hits for the platform. Nintendo isn’t finished, though.

On November 22, the same day Microsoft’s Xbox One launches, Nintendo will be releasing The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. The game is being billed as a spiritual successor to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for the Super Nintendo. It will feature a mechanic in which Link will be able to transform himself into a 2-D depiction to move along walls.

Nintendo today released two new trailers for A Link Between Worlds. The first is nearly two minutes of gameplay that shows off classic top-down Zelda mechanics, and sound effects. The second previews some of the music that will be included in the game – always an important part of a Zelda title.

  • Lorule Is Hyrule’s Shadow Realm In The Legend Of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

Lorule Is Hyrule’s Shadow Realm In The Legend Of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

One of the core gameplay components from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was the existence of the dark world. It was a twisted form of Hyrule that reflected the evil heart of Ganon and his desires, and really stood out as a defining feature for the early SNES title. Now the Hyrule from A Link to the Past is back on the 3DS, but the Dark World got a new, decidedly cheesier, name.

As was previously revealed, Link can turn into a chalk drawing and become a 2D figure on the walls of his surroundings. At certain areas, he can even travel through the walls and come out in an alternate form of Hyrule called Lorule. (Get it?). This alternate world even has a princess named Hilda that looks like exactly like Zelda, except that she has black hair.

As for the rest of the trailer, Nintendo lays the nostalgia on thick. The three magic pendants, now bearing the symbols of the three goddesses, make a comeback as Link removes the Master Sword from its resting place in the Lost Woods. It even uses the same classic opening jingle from the SNES classic accompanied by a new orchestral opening song.

What’s new is that there appears to be a new villain this time around that bears no resemblance to Ganon or Ganondorf. At the time of A Link to the Past, Ganondorf had lost what remained of his humanity and fully transformed into the pig creature we all know as Ganon. He was able to invade Hyrule by possessing the wizard Agahnim so perhaps the new villain in A Link Between Worlds is in a similar situation.

  • Friday The 13th: This Is What The NES Game Should Have Been

If you’ve ever played the Friday the 13th NES game, there is a good chance you were disappointed. That goes especially for fans of the film franchise. Dr. Terror’s Hacktivision has imagined what a truly legit Friday the 13th NES game could have entailed (of course, you have to take into account that some of what is depicted comes from films that were not yet around during the Nintendo Entertainment System’s heyday).

    As Dr. Terror explains:

Hacktivision is a project that creates fake video game trailers from the 8-Bit graphic imagery of Frank Browning, the soundscape and glitch renditions of Sean O’Connor and the gameplay and editing stylings of Dr. TERROR.

What they’ve come up with for this Friday the 13th is truly something special for fans of the movies. It imagines an 8-bit game in which you can play through each installment in the franchise, complete with a real film-inspired soundtrack. Better yet, it incorporates elements of Zelda, Castlevania and Duck Hunt, among other classic titles.

Somebody really needs to make this exist.

  • The Legend of Cage Is The Greatest Video Game That Never Was

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask gets a bad rap. It’s one of the most controversial entries in the venerated series, and many find the game’s themes to be too dark and depressing. To those gamers, YouTuber Criken has given them a reason to give Majora’s Mask one more chance.

It’s called The Legend of Cage, and it replaces all the textures in Majora’s Mask with the visage of Reddit’s OneTrueGod Nicolas Cage. Here’s what inspired such madness:

After months of uncomfortable work, the Nicolas Cage texture pack for Majora’s Mask is finally finished. Why make this you may ask? I wish I had an answer for you. The truth is co-modder Shayne and I lost the luxury of free will as soon as we began working on this project. We had no goal, only Cage.

Criken says he will release the texture pack if and when he finds a way to properly compile it. Until then, he says that there will be plenty of Nicolas Cage/Zelda crossover goodness in subsequent gameplay videos.

  • It’s Dangerous To Go Alone, Take This Infographic

The Legend of Zelda is one of the greatest franchises to ever grace gaming. The action-adventure series has inspired countless other greats while it constantly reinvents itself with each new entry. How much actually changes between each game though?

A recent inforgraphic from the fine folks at CopyPress has sifted through all the major entries in The Legend of Zelda franchise to reveal some lesser known facts about the franchise. You won’t find random trivia, like how Mario and Luigi make cameos in Ocarina of Time, in here. It’s more about crunching the numbers.

Take for instance, did you know that Link has used 22 different swords throughout his adventures in Hyrule and other lands? We tend to think only in terms of the Master Sword, but Link has always had to start with a lesser blade on his adventures.

Interestingly enough, the original Legend of Zelda only featured 27 different enemies and 43 items. The franchise now features over 827 enemies and Link has collected close to 800 different items throughout the games. Skyward Sword alone features 120 items that Link can collect.

The best game in the series – A Link to the Past – holds the distinction of featuring the most dungeons at 12. The GBA rerelease of the same game holds the record for most bosses at 13. Numbers aren’t everything, of course, but they certainly do help in this case. A Link to the Past is the longest game in the franchise and every dungeon is just as unique as the last.

Nintendo hasn’t announced any Zelda games for the next year, but we know they’re working on something for the Wii U. They must also have something in the works for the 3DS after the success of the 3D remake of Ocarina of Time. While every game in the franchise is special, let’s hope they can capture the magic of A Link to the Past and Wind Waker in the next game.

  • Fistful Of Rupees Is The Zelda Western We Never Knew We Wanted

I love The Legend of Zelda franchise. Likewise, I love Westerns. I never thought that the two would meet, but my subconscious desire has now been fulfilled thanks to a fan film.

The Game Station has taken it upon themselves to produce Fistful of Rupees. It’s the story from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but set in a Western setting. It seems like an odd fit, but it totally works. The casting is top notch with nerd goddess Lisa Foiles taking on the role of Zelda. What really makes the genre bending work is that Link is the silent hero, just like the greatest Western heroes.

I hope the trailer wets your whistle for more Zelda Western action. The premier of Fistful of Rupees will go up on YouTube on August 7. It’s also worth noting that this is only the first in a series of three short films.

Now that Zelda has a Western adaptation, it’s time to start thinking about what’s next. I think we can all agree that a steampunk Zelda film, or game for that matter, would be about the most amazing thing that humanity could ever achieve.

  • Video Game Villain Super Group Rears Ugly Head

Have you ever wondered what woud happen if some of the greatest video game villains teamed up to give the heroes a run for their money? I’m not talking Smash Bros. here, I’m talking a combination of power and resources to create a committee to destroy Mario, Ryu, Link, and Sonic.

Would it work? Could it work? They definitely have the resources. Bowser’s and Robotnik’s armies, Ganondorf’s magic, M. Bison’s crime network, Wario’s…..bodily functions???

Simon from Orlando, Florida has made our little fantasy come true. He has put 5 of the greatest video game villains ever into one art piece. Here is the great set piece of Bowser, Wario, Dr. Robotnick, Ganondorf, and M. Bison:

  • Zelda: The Musical Hits All The Nostalgia Buttons

What if I told you that someone had made something called “Zelda: The Musical?” Did your heart flutter? Good, so did mine.

That’s the good news – it exists. The bad news is that it’s only four minutes long and not coming to a stage near you. At least not yet.

It’s the old Legend of Zelda meets the (relatively) new Legend of Zelda with this masterpiece, written and compaosed by Mitchell Moffit. Featuring the characters of Link, Ganondorf, Zelda, Malon, and of course, Deku Tree, take a trip back to Hyrule, Broadway style with Zelda: The Musical.

As WebProNews writer Zack Walton put it, “this just went from endearing to what the hell. I like it.” Indeed. Check it out below:

    Z..Ze…ZELDA!
Just hearing her name and I’d say “Hell Ya!”
I’ll save Hyrule and leave my life behind
I’m only 10 and can’t control my sex drive
Somewhere she is waiting for me
And I know she’ll have my babies

…yeah, we all knew the real reasons, Link.

In a world cluttered with musical interpretations, video game-based fan videos, and even fan made musical interpretations of video games, this one really stands out. It actually makes me want to go back and beat Ocarina of Time again – maybe even in 25 minutes.

  • GDC 2012: Gears of War Creator Was Inspired By Zelda

Every game creator is inspired by the games of their youth, which in turn leads them to make the next set of games that inspires the next generation of developers.

Gamasutra is reporting that a panel today at GDC had four legendary game designers talk about the games that influenced them. The game designers in question were Will Wright, Sid Meier, Cliff Bleszinksi and John Romero.

For a bit of background, here’s what each designer is most famous for. Will Wright was the co-founder of Maxis who created games such as Sim City and the Sims. The last game he was a part of before departing Maxis was Spore.

Sid Meier is in the same boat as Will Wright as game designers that perhaps need no introduction as his name graces each game that he produces – Sid Meier’s Civilization. What you may not know is that he is also responsible for Alpha Centauri and Pirates.

Cliff Bleszinski may be the most contemporary designer on the list, but he shot up in notoriety as the creator of the Gears of War franchise. Before that though, he worked on Epic’s Unreal Tournament series. Cliff Bleszinski will always hold a special place in my heart, however, as part of the team that worked on Jazz Jackrabbit.

Finally, John Romero was a co-founder of id Software where the first-person shooter was born. He was involved in the creation of Doom and Wolfenstein 3D, but may be forever remembered as the creator of the ill-fated and absolutely trashy game Daikatana.

Now that introductions are out of the way, let’s get to the games that inspired them to make their most famous games. Will Wright was up first and his inspiration was more of a tool set than a game. He said that Pinball Construction Set for the Apple II was his inspiration for Sim City. The graphical editor was especially of great importance as it paved the way for the simplistic editor tools that were in Sim City.

    Gears Of War Zelda

Sid Meier said that if it wasn’t for the classic PC game Seven Cities of Gold, he might not have started making historical games like Civilization. The focus on history and real world events led him to realize that topics like this could enter video games and still take hold of the player’s imagination.

Cliff Bleszinski may have shared the most entertaining story with how his love of Nintendo and The Legend of Zelda led to him being made of fun at school. It may have not inspired any game at the moment for the young game creator to be, but it did put him on the path to becoming a rockstar of the games industry. In his talk, he mentions this ad for Zelda that didn’t really sell the game for him. I wonder why?

John Romero spoke on how color in video games was his first “wow” moment. He was so used to seeing black and white games and then saw Pac-Man, which was his first game in color.

While some of these creators went on to make vastly different games from what inspired them, there still is something to be said of the experience that leads us to choose gaming as more than just a hobby.

What game was your defining moment that led you to realize this was more than just a hobby? Do you have any particular awesome stories? Let us know in the comments.

  • Minecraft Recreates Ocarina of Time In New Mod

Confession time: I got bored of Minecraft really fast. It just wasn’t my cup of tea as I lack any kind of the imagination that made Minecraft such a hit among players in the first place.

With that out of the way, it’s about time I pick up Minecraft again. I don’t particularly care for the creation aspect of it, but playing the game in a pre-built world sounds mighty fine to me.

That’s what the team at genGAME did with Hyrulecraft. They have recreated the entirety of the overworld map from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in Minecraft.

From the trailer, it appears that they have truly recreated everything on a 1:1 scale with the original. They apparently have even recreated a few of the dungeons with Inside the Great Deku Tree featuring prominently at one point in the video.

The Minecraft mod is currently in Alpha and in playable form. You can download it here.

While Ocarina of Time is not my favorite Zelda game, that distinction falls to Wind Waker, the ability to see Hyrule from the perspective of Minecraft is extremely tantalizing.

Download it and tell us what you think!

  • Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Ad Features Robin Williams

I’m not sure if it is possible to love a game more than I loved The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64. I can’t even quantify the countless hours I spent riding trusty Epona through the land of Hyrule. Yes, I even had a Great Deku Tree poster, don’t judge. And anyone that says Goldeneye 64 was a better game should refrain from talking to me.

So imagine my delight when I came across these YouTube vids.

Nintendo has updated the classic game for play on its 3DS handheld system. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D will be released in the UK on June 17th and in the States on June 19th, and it seems that nobody could be happier about this than Robin Williams and his daughter Zelda.

Yep, Zelda, named after the princess herself. Apparently Robin Williams and his wife were such huge Zelda fans back in the 80s that they decided to named their daughter after the game. This 30-second spot for the new game avoids being cheesy and is instead nostalgic and touching. Robin Williams discusses the birth of his daughter as if it were Link’s magical quest. And he sports quite the epic beard. Check it out below:

There’s also a longer video that must have been made during the making of the commercial that goes more in depth about the Williams family’s love for the game. Apparently people always ask him if his daughter is named after F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda. He proudly tells them no, she is named after Zelda from The Legend of Zelda. Win, Robin Williams.

The new version of the game has both the original quest from the N64 version and the rearranged dungeons from the Master Quest version of the game. It also sports updated graphics and 3D effects.
