EU Court: Video Embeds Don’t Violate Copyright Law

When it comes to the usage of media on the Internet, there has always been a lot of debate about what’s acceptable versus what’s unacceptable. Here we are in 2014 still trying to hammer out exactly what all falls into “fair use,” and who is ultimately responsible when copyrighted material is used in ways unintended by the copyright holder.

It always depends on the scenario in question, but the state of the social, user-generated Internet makes it virtually impossible for content owners to truly control what happens to their product.

The other day, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that it is not copyright infringement if someone embeds a copyrighted video on their website, even if that video itself was uploaded without permission in the first place. The basic logic behind the ruling is that embedding it isn’t making it available in a new way. If you embed a YouTube video, that’s still YouTube. It was on YouTube, and that’s still where it is, so someone embedding that video on their site using the code made available by YouTube doesn’t make that person responsible for infringement.

TorrentFreak reports on the verdict after obtaining a copy (which here in German):

The Court argues that embedding a file or video is not a breach of creator’s copyrights under European law, as long as it’s not altered or communicated to a new public. In the current case, the video was already available on YouTube so embedding it is not seen as a new communication.

“The embedding in a website of a protected work which is publicly accessible on another website by means of a link using the framing technology … does not by itself constitute communication to the public within the meaning of [the EU Copyright directive] to the extent that the relevant work is neither communicated to a new public nor by using a specific technical means different from that used for the original communication,” the Court’s verdict reads.

As the publication points out, a previous case with a similar ruling about linking was used as the basis for this ruling. Essentially, the content is there whether a third-party webpage points to it or not. Pointing to it, even via an embed is not infringement, as far as the court is concerned.

One notable aspect of Are You Afraid of the Dark?, one that’s premier in endearing it to many kids of its era, is its unsettling nature. While some tales had a happy ending, many did not. You remember the dollhouse episode, right?

Are You Afraid of the Dark? ran for seven seasons in Canada – five in the U.S. It’s almost Halloween – go relive your childhood.

  • YouTube Gets Realtime Analytics Report

    YouTube Gets Realtime Analytics Report

YouTube is now offering a realtime report for video publishers showing estimated views data for the last five published videos. The data is also available for any individual video.

Google says the report can give you early insights into the performance of a video to help you adjust your promotion strategy.

The report shows graphs for hour-by-hour data for a sliding window of two days and for minute-by-minute data for a sliding window of an hour.

“Both graphs are referring to the local time zone of the viewer as determined by the computer’s setting,” Google notes. “There is a latency of a few minutes between the occurrence of the view and its display in the report; data is then automatically updating, without the need to refresh the page. The ‘current’ hour bar is highlighted to stress that the hour is still incomplete. Realtime data is estimated and meant to provide general guidance on potential view activity on your videos. This approximate character of the numbers is also shown in the rounding off to two significant digits.”

The realtime data cannot be aggregated, and is only available on a per-video basis.

“The realtime report does not support filtering or further customization of data. Therefore, the geographic filter, the date picker, the comparison and the download functionalities are disabled in the interface,” says Google.

  • YouTube Invests Millions More In Original Content

YouTube Invests Millions More In Original Content

YouTube announced that it is further investing in original content from its creators, helping to fund new content and help “top creators” get more material to their fans.

Several years ago, YouTube spent over $100 million on original content from channels. It’s unclear exactly how much they’re dishing out this time, but it’s said to be in the millions.

“As any creator will tell you, making compelling new content isn’t easy, and we expect to learn a lot through this process,” says Alex Carloss, Head of YouTube Originals in a blog post. “We’ll experiment with new formats and ideas. We’ll get our hands dirty. We’ll make some mistakes. Together, we’ll (hopefully) create some fantastic new content on YouTube. But one thing is certain: there’s no one we’d rather go on this adventure with than our creators.”

“It’s been an incredible few years for YouTube. And with YouTube stars jumping from their bedrooms to billboards in Times Square, we think there’s never been a better time to be a creator,” said Carloss.

The new round of content funding is likely a move to keep YouTube channels that have gained massive followings from jumping ship to a competing service. Rumor has it that Facebook, for example, has been trying to steal some of them away.

  • YouTube Gets Better For Chromecast

    YouTube Gets Better For Chromecast

Google just announced a new feature that will make watching YouTube videos a little better for Chromecast users. You can now queue up videos to play as you watch.

In an announcement on Google+, YouTube says:

Are you casting from www.YouTube.com to your TV and lost in a sea of browser tabs? Good news, matey. Now you can keep playing a video as you browse and queue the next ones to play – all in one tab. Also, within the next few days you’ll see a new look for the watch page on www.YouTube.com that lets you more easily create playlists and share videos across social media, as well as puts the whole video description in one spot.

If you were using the YouTube mobile app, you could already browse and queue up videos while playing another video, but it’s nice to see Google make the experience better for desktop users.

Last month, Google launched the ability for Android users to mirror their screens to the TV using the Chromecast, though the functionality was only made available for certain devices.

  • Google At Work On Kid-Friendly Versions Of Its Products

Google At Work On Kid-Friendly Versions Of Its Products

Earlier this week, news came out that Google is looking at catering to a whole new market – kids under thirteen years old.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the company is working on a new system that would let parents set up accounts for kids, and control how they use services and what info is collected about them.

The Journal’s source said it’s Google’s response to people who are already trying to sign their kids up for the company’s products. Apparently they want to make sure it’s handled right and lawfully.

The Information, which first reported on Google’s plans, says Google will offer a dashboard for parents to oversee kids’ activities. This would be in addition to a kid-friendly version of YouTube.

As it stands right now, you’re really running a risk with any YouTube content not from an official channel. You never know when that Yo Gabba Gabba video is going to be a profanity-laced parody or if that funny animal video is a little more adult-oriented than you expected.

Google goes to great lengths to censor adult content from image searches, even with SafeSearch set to its most open option, but sometimes things slip through the cracks.

It will be very interesting to see how Google is able to handle actual kids versions of products. If it messes up, it’s going to generate a great deal of controversy, not that Google is any stranger to that.

  • ‘YouTube Music Key’ Is Google’s Upcoming Subscription Service, According to Report

‘YouTube Music Key’ Is Google’s Upcoming Subscription Service, According to Report

Rumors of a YouTube-branded subscription streaming service have been floating around for quite some time – both before Google launched Play Music All Access and since. The reasoning appears rather simple. YouTube is already a massive destination for streaming music – and as of now, it’s all ad-supported. YouTube can offer the most content of any service, and Google has been looking to figure out how to turn it into a subscription service. A little over a year ago, Google made the first steps in offering some paid subscription content on YouTube with their paid channels. Music is a logical step.

Well, apparently it has a name now. According to a report from Android Police, Google’s YouTube-branded subscription service will be called YouTube Music Key. When it will launch is still a mystery, however.

So, how will this fit in with Google’s existing subscription service, Google Play Music All Access? Pretty well, according to the report. It’ll apparently get a rebranding – Google Play Music Key – and the $9.99 monthly price will cover both YouTube Key And Play Music Key.

Android Police says that YouTube Music Key will offer ad-free music, audio-only playback, and offline playback.

It’s possible that YouTube Music Key will be marketed as a destination for music beyond the music – concert footage, remixes, covers, etc. Given that YouTube is already the number one destination for this type of music, this makes sense.

Well over a year ago, Google provided this not-so-cryptic reply when asked about the YouTube music service rumors:

“While we don’t comment on rumor or speculation, there are some content creators that think they would benefit from a subscription revenue stream in addition to ads, so we’re looking at that.”

Dealing with those content creators could be the final roadblock that Google must navigate to launch this project. Independent labels haven’t exactly seen eye to eye with Google over the YouTube model.

  • PETA Offering Reward for Squirrel Kicker Identity

PETA Offering Reward for Squirrel Kicker Identity

In a video that went viral online, an unnamed Frenchman was shown kicking a squirrel into the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Now the UK branch of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is offering a $17,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the squirrel-kicker.

PETA urged anyone with details to relay information to the Grand Canyon’s chief ranger, and calls the man seen in the video a “heartless thug.”

In the clip, (the original has been deleted from YouTube), a shirtless man is seen setting down crumbs to lure a squirrel to the edge of the cliff, before kicking it into the canyon, while his friend in biker shorts watches.

Grand Canyon National Park spokeswoman Kirby-Lynn Shedlowski said that rangers have been investigating the video, and have concluded that it appears to have been shot at the Grand Canyon, but when and exactly where is still vague.

Here is a copy of the clip of the incident:

If the kicker is caught, he could face a charge of wildlife harassment, which carries a penalty of up to six months imprisonment and a $5,000 fine, Shedlowski said.

The Frenchmen from the video did not make any new fans on Twitter:

PETA, founded in 1980, is the largest animal rights group in the world, with over 3 million members and supporters. Its slogan reads, “animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment or abuse in any way.”

  • Sarah Palin’s New Online Network Is More of the Same

Sarah Palin’s New Online Network Is More of the Same

Erstwhile Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is launching a new subscription-based online network.

That is one of those sentences that sounds lot more impressive than it really is. Kind of like saying, “Our company is utilizing the information superhighway to maximize customer outreach,” when what you really mean is, “My nephew set up a Blogspot page for us.”

Sarah Palin’s new “subscription-based online network” appears to be a glorified YouTube channel combined with a blog that allows her to say all the same things that she says on her Facebook page and sundry opinion pieces on Breitbart and elsewhere. But this way people pay her $9.95 a month to get to hear it.

Palin’s new “network” is carried on the TAPP video platform, which is so excited about her channel’s launch that their site does not even mention it in their channel lineup. You have to look on the “Press” page to see a link to someone else’s article about it, buried in dozens of other links about their launch.

Palin touts her new network as a bold alternative, a place where she can talk directly to fans about things that the powers-that-be don’t want her to talk about.

“We’ll go beyond the sound bites and the media’s politically correct filter to get to the truth,” she assures fans.

Within the “network” there is a Bristol Palin blog, a “best of” section with a single link to a past Palin Fox News op-ed, and a video that features Palin herself riffing on her favorite topic: Why Obama is a poor President and can’t handle Putin.

“A final thought about Team Obama’s handling of this Ukrainian situation: you know, it didn’t have to escalate like this. A good leader is able to avoid crises before they escalate. A good leader steers world events instead of merely, you know, just kinda going with the wind and responding to one crisis after another by whipping up strategies on the fly. After the tanks start rolling. After the missiles start exploding and innocent people get killed. President Obama’s leading from behind? Well, it’s not leading. It’s reacting. And that’s not a safe place to be in a dangerous world full of bullies, and terrorists, and tyrants. America, you deserve better.”

The really bizarre thing about Palin’s new “network” is that it is a startling case of life imitating art. It would appear that SNL was way out ahead of her on this one.

  • North Korea Launches Ballistic Missile Into Sea

North Korea Launches Ballistic Missile Into Sea

On the day before the 61st anniversary of the Korean War armistice, North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile into the sea off its east coast.

The missile was fired from the country’s southwest Hwanghae province on Saturday evening, and traveled roughly 310 miles over land before touching down in the Sea of Japan. North Korea routinely test-fires missiles as a means to display its military prowess, though Great Successor Kim Jong-un has been firing an uncharacteristically high amount of smaller, short-range ammunition this year. His father, Dear Leader Kim Jong-il, had preferred to sporadically launch longer-range warheads and conduct nuclear tests, in attempts to force concessions from the rest of the world.

North Korea demands that South Korea tone down their joint military drills with the U.S. troops stationed in the region, because the exercises look similar to a rehearsal for invasion, from the vantage of Pyongyang. The DPNK would also like Seoul to stop with all of the slander, and the South Koreans would like a more serious stance on nuclear disarmament from Kim Jong-un’s regime.

What was transpiring when this photo was taken actually happened, in real life:

Kim Jong-un’s style is different from that of his late father, perhaps due to his age, as well as possible hard feelings over being a sort of walking internet meme. Recently, Pyongyang had asked China to attempt to control the viral spread of a YouTube clip featuring the Great Successor dancing through a series of absurd situations.

Also, video game developer Moneyhorse is set to release Glorious Leader!, an old-school shoot-’em-up which features scenarios that describe Kim’s life-facts generated by the propaganda machine of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

  • Earth Facing Sixth Mass Extinction

    Earth Facing Sixth Mass Extinction

The Earth may be on the brink of a sixth mass extinction, due to human activity, according to the academic journal Science.

The Earth’s most recent mass extinction event occurred roughly 65 million years ago, when an asteroid wiped out 75% of all existing species, including the dinosaurs.

Commenting on the progression of Earth’s present defaunation, or loss of species, Science author Sacha Vignieri said, “human impacts on animal biodiversity are an under-recognized form of global environmental change. Among terrestrial vertebrates, 322 species have become extinct since 1500, and populations of the remaining species show 25% average decline in abundance.”

The team of biologists and ecologists who contributed to the study revealed that a third of all vertebrates on the planet are presently threatened or endangered. Vignieri cites “overexploitation, habitat destruction and impacts from invasive species” as ongoing threats, but warns that climate change due to human activity will emerge as the leading cause of defaunation. Likewise, diseases that come from pathogens introduced by humans have become a factor.

Paleoecologists estimate that modern man has driven approximately 1,000 species into extinction during our 200,000 years on the planet. Since the sixteenth century, man has killed off hundreds of animals, including the passenger pigeon and the Tasmanian tiger. According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, there are another 20,000 species threatened today.

Though, research has suggested that the widening extinction trend can be reversed.

Humans presently use half of the planet’s unfrozen land for cities, logging or agriculture. Reforestation and restoration of lost habitats, coupled with relocation and recolonization efforts can assist in the “refaunation” of species driven from their native locales.

Based on data published in Nature in 2011, it will take a century or two to assure another mass extinction event at the present rate of global depredation.

  • Good News For Your Facebook Traffic

Good News For Your Facebook Traffic

Changes to the Facebook News Feed made over recent months may have angered some brands and publishers. Such changes may have even pushed some to abandon their Facebook strategies in favor of competing social platforms like Twitter or Google+, but if you’re looking for traffic, that’s probably not an entirely wise move to make.

Has your Facebook traffic been increasing compared to that from other social platforms? Let us know in the comments.

Much has been made of the decline of organic reach of Facebook Page posts, but the social network only continues to drive more and more traffic to websites. In fact, according to a new report, it’s the only one of the top eight social networks to actually drive more traffic from March to June than it did in the months prior.

In April, we looked at Shareholic’s Q1 Social Media Traffic Report. It found that Facebook referrals were skyrocketing, increasing nearly 38% between December and April. Pinterest came in second place (a distant second at that), but was growing even faster at over 48%.

Now the Q2 report is out, and Facebook and Pinterest remain in the number one and two spots respectively, but the numbers look considerably different. Facebook increased by 10.09% while Pinterest decreased over 19%.

Wow, what happened, Pinterest? And this comes as we were just talking about how much Buzzfeed has been growing its Pinterest traffic.

Year-over-year, Pinterest is still looking pretty good. It’s up nearly 70% for referrals. Facebook is up over 150%. The only other network to show an increase year-over-year, is StumbleUpon at 13.33%. Quarter-over-quarter, it was down over 39% by Shareaholic’s numbers.

Facebook drove 23.39% of overall visits to sites.

All in all, social media appears to making up a greater percentage of the referral pie. According to the report, the eight largest sources of social referrals drove 31.07% of overall traffic to sites received last month. That’s compared to 15.55% during the same time last year.

Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn each saw dramatic decreases in referrals year-over-year. Reddit dropped over 65% over that time, while YouTube fell over 82% and LinknedIn over 77%.

“Easily the largest social network, Facebook commands the most clout among marketers and publishers hungry for referrals,” writes Shareaholic’s Danny Wong. “Well-positioned for world domination, Facebook now drives nearly a quarter (23.39%) of overall traffic to sites and has no plans of stopping anytime soon. Over the last year, its “share of traffic” has skyrocketed, up 150.49% (14.05 percentage points) from 9.34% in June 2013.”

“Users are always plugged into their feed and without realizing, tend to be highly invested in frequent check-ins and lightweight touch points with their connections. Simply put, Facebook is winning the referrals war because users can’t seem to get enough of content shared by close friends and relatable acquaintances,” he adds. “Facebook’s rich, and somewhat unpredictable feed promises anything but monotony. Multi-form media (short posts, long rants, link previews, unformatted links without previews, etc.) offers inconsistency which makes it impossible to scroll far without at least a handful of posts catching your eye.”

You may not get very far in the New Feed with the things you post on your own Facebook Page (at least without paying for it), but it would seem that you should still be doing everything you can to encourage users to share your content on the social network from your website and any other means possible. People are clicking the links in their News Feeds.

It just so happens that Facebook launched a new feature this past week, which should result in even more referrals for sites. The new Save feature lets users save links (as well as places, movies, TV shows, and music) they come across in their News Feed to look at later.

Let’s face it. We all see plenty of interesting looking stories come through our News Feed every day, but we don’t always have time to stop and read them when we see them. As I said in a previous post, this is a long-overdue feature, and one that makes Facebook instantly better as a news reader (which seems to be one of Facebook’s ultimate goals anyway).

Introducing Save on Facebook from Facebook on Vimeo.

Users who are already using RSS readers like Feedly are going to love the feature, even if it’s lacking in some seemingly obvious features. You can’t, for example, save regular status updates, photos or videos. At least not yet. Video actually seems like something people would want to save more than anything, as it takes time to watch a video. With Facebook recently getting into video advertising, this would seem especially critical to the feature. Perhaps it will come later.

The feature does support sponsored posts, so that’s good news for Facebook advertisers. If you’re promoting a compelling enough link, you might get the click later, even if the user doesn’t click when they first encounter the ad. In fact, this is all the more reason to promote truly interesting content.

The lesson here is that Facebook is already driving more traffic to sites, while all the other platforms are driving less than they were before (at least according to this particular study), and that was before you could save links.

Do you expect your Facebook traffic to increase? Do you think the Save feature is a big deal for content creators? Share your thoughts in the comments.

  • Kim Jong-Un Furious Over Viral Dance Video

North Korea’s Great Successor Kim Jong-un is said to be very displeased over a parody video, which features the Supreme Leader dancing his way through absurd situations to a Chinese pop song.

According to South Korean newspaper The Chosunilbo, North Korea asked China to stop the spread of the YouTube clip, as it “seriously compromises Kim’s dignity and authority.” China was somehow unable to stifle the virulence of the video.

The clip was edited by a Chinese man surnamed Zhang, from Suzhou, who reportedly studied at Kyonggi University in South Korea. The video features despot Kim dancing with Russian President Vladimir Putin, skipping hand in hand with Osama bin Laden, being kicked to the ground by President Obama after pirouetting through a ballet studio, being kicked into a pool with a garbage can over his head, dancing on a baseball field and finally riding off on the back of a pig.

The video, which has so far garnered over two million views, is set to a song named Little Apple by a Chinese pop group called Chopstick Brothers.

Here is a loose translation of some of the lyrics from Little Apple:

    Never think you hate
    Everything you love
There you are fresh every day
    There you, more brilliant sunshine

While Kim has yet to explicitly threaten to rain hellfire upon China, his North Korean regime is unhappy. After all, Jong-un has been picked on quite a bit lately. Video game developer Moneyhorse is set to release Glorious Leader!, an old-school shoot-’em-up which features scenarios that describe Kim’s life-facts generated by the propaganda machine of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

He was officially declared the Supreme Leader following the state funeral for his father Kim Jong-il on December 28, 2011.

  • North Dakota Oil Fire Extinguished

    North Dakota Oil Fire Extinguished

A large fire that broke out at an oil supply and logistics company in Williston, North Dakota has been extinguished.

The blaze, which ignited in an oil patch hub in the western part of the state, grew so hot that fireballs shot hundreds of feet into the air. The fire started at around midnight Monday, and Williston Fire Department shift captain Steven Kerzmann said that it is still unclear what caused the blaze. Fire trucks from neighboring towns Ray and Epping assisted in controlling the fire, and three of the five buildings at the site were saved.

Red River Supply owns the facility, and the company says it provides storage, blending and delivery of oil drilling fluids, soil stabilization materials, dust control products and proppants. North Dakota state records show that various flammable chemicals were stored at the site of the fire.

Kerzmann commented that the majority of firefighters who battled the blaze left Tuesday evening, though one truck remained at the site to monitor hot spots. “The fire is out, but you’ve got some smoldering embers that might pop up here and there,” Kerzmann said. Red River Supply said that no one was injured in the fire.

Williston Fire Chief Jason Catrambone said officials have yet to identify which specific chemicals had burned at the site, though Williston Mayor Howard Klug said a hazmat unit monitoring air quality found nothing potentially harmful. Tim Wiedrich, a spokesman for the North Dakota Department of Health, said the agency is also monitoring air quality around the site.

Flights were restricted from Williston’s Sloulin Field International Airport until 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to airport manager Steven Kjergaard. The Federal Aviation Administration issued the six-hour restriction due to concerns over the massive pillar of smoke rising from the still-smoldering site.

Local police initially evacuated everyone within a half-mile of the blaze, and traffic in the area was diverted. The perimeter has since been downgraded to two blocks from the Red River Supply facility.

  • Plague Found in China, City of Yumen Sealed Off

Plague Found in China, City of Yumen Sealed Off

Chinese state media reported Tuesday that the city of Yumen has been sealed off since last week, after a 38-year-old man died of bubonic plague.

Yumen, which has a population of roughly 30,000, is situated in the northwestern province of Gansu, and is presently surrounded by police at roadblocks. No residents are allowed to leave the established perimeter, and travelers are being forced to take detours, according to China Central Television (CCTV).

CCTV reported that Yumen “has enough rice, flour and oil to supply all its residents for up to one month.” China Daily newspaper revealed that “four quarantine sectors” have been set up in Yumen, where 151 people are being held for observation. CCTV added that “local residents and those in quarantine are all in stable condition.” No new plague cases have been reported in the city.

The sole plague fatality in Yumen occurred after a man came into contact with a dead marmot. Marmots are similar to squirrels, though larger, and can carry plague-infected fleas in their fur.

Bubonic plague is a bacterial infection of the lymphatic system, usually resulting from the bite of an infected rat flea, scientifically known as Xenopsylla cheopis. Plague symptoms appear suddenly, usually two to five days after exposure, and symptoms include general malaise, chills, high fever, muscle cramps, a painful lymph gland swelling called a bubo, seizures and gangrene.

Roughly two-thirds of untreated plague cases result in death, though several types of antibiotics are effective in treating the infection, and when administered can cut the mortality rate to 1-15%. According to the U.S. Centers Centers of Disease Control, “human plague infections continue to occur in the western United States, but significantly more cases occur in parts of Africa and Asia.”

Here is a clip documenting a case of domestic plague that a man contracted in Oregon:

In China, plague is classified as a Class A infectious disease, the “most serious under China’s Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases,” according to the Xinhua news agency.

Once known as the “Black Death,” bubonic plague ravaged Europe in the 14th century, leaving an estimated 25 million dead, or roughly 30–60% of the population.

  • World’s Largest Flying Aquatic Insect Found in China

The world’s largest flying aquatic insect has been identified in China’s Sichuan province, according to entomologists in the region.

The Insect Museum of West China said that villagers from Chengdu presented what they called “weird insects that resemble giant dragonflies with long teeth,” earlier this month. Several of the bugs were examined by museum staff, and were found to be remarkably large specimens of the giant dobsonfly, which is indigenous to China and Vietnam.

There are over 220 species of dobsonflies, and they are found throughout the Americas and Asia, as well as in South Africa. The massive insects are of the subfamily Corydalinae, part of the megalopteran family Corydalidae.

The largest of the dobsonflies delivered to the museum had a wingspan of 8.27 inches, setting a new record for the world’s largest flying aquatic insect. The previous record was held by a South American helicopter damselfly, which had a wingspan of 7.5 inches.

Here is a clip concerning the Sichuan dobsonflies:

While the pincers of the male dobsonfly appear to be formidable, they are actually too large for it to get enough leverage to break human skin, and are primarily used to hold on to the female while mating. On the other hand, the smaller pincers of the female dobsonfly can draw blood.

Interestingly, much like a canary placed in the mines of old to detect poisonous gas leaks, the presence of dobsonflies near a water source is indicative of a healthy ecosystem. Dobsonflies are very sensitive to any fluctuations in water pH levels, as well as to the presence of trace elements of pollutants. Even if water is only slightly contaminated, a dobsonfly will move on to find a more pristine habitat.

The Chengdu discovery was the first time the giant dobsonfly was recorded in Sichuan province.

  • ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Creator Talks Casting Manson, Love

Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter discussed the casting of rock stars Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love for the seventh season of the hit FX motorcycle gang drama at the Television Critics Association Summer Tour in Beverly Hills.

Sutter commented, “I tend to do this every season, I like to do some casting that’s a little bit outside the box, you know, from Stephen King to David Hasselhoff – we try to do stuff that’s fun.”

Regarding Manson’s casting, Sutter explained, “Manson (and) I became friends with through some music buddies and he’s a huge fan of the show and that was him basically just wearing me down and we found a great role for him and he’s great.” Manson’s character is described by FX as a “white supremacist prison shot-caller who Jax [Charlie Hunnam’s character] uses to expand his power base.”

Commenting on his Sons gig, Manson said, “‘Sons’ has been such a big part of my life, as well as my father’s. So I was determined to make him proud by being involved in what will probably be remembered as the most amazing piece of television cinema. After all, the very heart of ‘SOA’ is about that relationship. So, now all I need is a motorcycle.”

Manson, born Brian Hugh Warner, also recently hounded Eastbound and Down creator Danny McBride for a spot on that show, and got his wish:

Regarding the casting of Courtney Love, Sutter said he doesn’t know Love too well, but they met a few times and she had expressed interest in being on the show. “And then, we had this role of a school teacher and I thought, ‘Who better than Courtney Love?’ and so it sort of fits into our parameters of Sons of Anarchy casting,” Sutter remarked.

Love will first appear in the fourth episode as Ms. Harrison, the pre-school teacher of main character Jax’s (Charlie Hunnam) eldest son Abel.

Sons of Anarchy season 7 premieres September, 9 at 10 PM ET/PT on FX.

  • Fruit Sold at Costco and Trader Joe’s Recalled

Wawona Packing Company, based in the Central Valley of California, has voluntarily recalled white and yellow peaches, white and yellow nectarines and various plum varieties.

The whole fruits were packed between June 1 and July 12, and distributed to Trader Joe’s and Costco stores.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a statement on the matter:

“FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – July 19, 2014 – Wawona Packing Company of Cutler, Calif is voluntarily recalling certain lots of whole peaches (white and yellow), nectarines (white and yellow), plums and pluots packed between June 1, 2014 through July 12,2014 due to the potential of the products being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Wawona Packing has notified retailers of the specific lots being recalled. No other products are impacted by this recall. No illnesses have been linked to this recall to date.”

Listeria monocytogenes is the bacterium that causes the infection listeriosis, an illness which causes death in 20% to 30% of cases. Listeria is most dangerous to pregnant women, children and the elderly. If an infection progresses to listeric meningitis, mortality rate may reach 70%.

Here is a small scientific piece on listeria:

No listeriosis infections have been reported, and Brent Smittcamp, President of Wawona Packing Co., commented, “We are aware of no illnesses related to the consumption of these products. By taking the precautionary step of recalling product, we will minimize even the slightest risk to public health, and that is our priority.”

Costco, the members-only warehouse club based in Issaquah, Washington, has been having some food issues, as of late. Back in March, the company dumped $2.8 million worth of perfectly good peanut butter into a New Mexico landfill due to a previous salmonella scare. The makers of the peanut butter, Sunland Inc., had asked Costco to at least donate the peanut butter to food banks, but the big box retailer declined.

  • Tim Tebow Staying in Shape for NFL

With NFL training camps commencing this week, former Broncos and Jets quarterback Tim Tebow is staying in shape and waiting for a call.

Tebow has been training at the Performance Enhancement Professionals facility in Scottsdale, Arizona, and also in Los Angeles, where he is coached by quarterback guru Tom House, to work on his skills and conditioning.

Regarding his intense training, Tebow commented, “I feel great. I feel the strongest, healthiest, throwing the best I ever have. I’m just really excited about the improvement.”

Tebow was cut from the Patriots roster before the start of last season and has not been a full-time starter in the NFL since the 2011 season. Still, Tebow believes he has a shot.

“One of my favorite quotes is ‘I don’t know what my future holds, but I know who holds my future.’ And in that, it gives you peace to just continue to work, go after what your heart desires and when you do that, you don’t have any regrets. I think that’s the best way to live life,” Tebow said.

Tebow discusses his Scottsdaleregimen, which includes “Danney-Ball” (named for Tebow’s trainer, Ian Danney), which is a variation of volleyball played with a 10-pound medicine ball:

If Tebow’s NFL bid doesn’t work out, in December he was hired by ESPN as a college football analyst for the SEC Network as co-host of SEC Nation, a travelling pre-game show. He made his ESPN debut during the 2014 BCS National Championship Game.

The Heisman Trophy winner also recently bought a five bedroom, 4.5 bathroom house located in Jacksonville, Florida, which made Florida Gators fans giddy. Tebow and his brother have also bought into the PDQ restaurant franchise in Jacksonville.

It’s been reported that Tebow is being courted by Orlando Predators arena football team owner David Siegel, so there is at least an option to play football in some capacity.
